I think it's commonly accepted that one should respect another's religion and their choices based on that. Fine I can do that mostly. Live and let live and all that.
However if we break it down on actual reality we're saying that made up stories and a whole belief system based on made up stories passed down to others over centuries should have more respect than actual real people with real stories.
When I think of it in that way then no I can't respect the beliefs he has as I'd rather respect real things, real people.

It's just a bit hypocritical IMO when he was happy to wear a shirt with the sponsor being a gambling firm when he stated he didn't wear the armband for 'religious reasons'.
---------------------
Yeah, this.
I don't really know whether people who are against this type of stuff are homophobic or are just, in their heads at least, "standing up to wokeism" or some BS (or indeed whether those are the same thing). Given the general ages of PL footballers it's not hard to believe a fair few of them are signed up an Andrew Tate way of thinking unfortunately...
In this case though, as much as I find it quite ridiculous that people are so against putting on an armband that's multicoloured, it should be a player's choice and I think it becomes counterproductive to make a big deal out of anyone not wanting to wear it.
That being said, if I were a gay Ipswich player I probably would be a bit disappointed with my captain taking that stance. But maybe that's a different matter.

You can't? This is a really small and easy gesture designed to make football feel more inclusive for a group of people who have typically felt unwelcomed by it, to say the least. I can totally see why people are disappointed that a PL captain just can't stomach taking part in it.
I don't really care what aspects of their religion people pick and choose to follow, but as Diafol points out, he was quite happy to spend a season wearing a shirt with "Unibet" plastered on it. If you are going to play the religion card, that to me feels a bit more damaging to its principles than wearing an armband to let gay people know it's OK to take part in football.
It's his call and as i said, if I were the FA I wouldn't be making a big deal out of it. But the rest of us are more than entitled to call it out as stupid and a bit hypocritical.
