I think that's a bit unfair. He might not be Zidane but when the team is working to its maximum Rooney is a solid goalscorer who will constantly deliver for you.
He just needed some more quality in the team a couple of years back.
We really should have moved heaven and earth to sign Sneijder back in 2010. Him and Rooney would have worked extremely well together IMO.
We should have tried to sign Ozil before we tried to sign Wesley.
Maestro
Is this Ozil any good?
I don't think it's harsh at all. I'm not saying he's bad I'm just saying he's not good enough to build the side around if you want to compete with the best. He's a reliable goal scorer for sure but his inability to control the ball, pass it and run with it is detrimental to the team when playing in the position he does.
It shows for England as well. Ok the players aren't as good but it doesn't excuse the poor performances.

You say this:
"Too many workhorses and not enough technical ability or guile or make something happen".
And then in your list of dross players you add Berbatov? Probably the most technically gifted player to play for the club and one of the most technical players in the world, who was instrumental in us winning the league by being highest scorer, and was treated like utter cra.p by Fergie.
Yes we paid a lot of money for him but we didn't exactly play to his strengths. Even then i'd say he was a good player for us - at times phenomenal. To put him in the same list as Bebe and Diouf is ridiculous, and you know it.

And you name Berba as an example of this???
I agree with your point but Berba is the most naturally gifted player Fergie has ever signed imo. His crime was not managing to get the best out of him (or even picking him).

For example we have De Gea who was a £16 million player sat on the bench when he should be playing. £16 million is a lot for a keeper and if he is being benched you would question why he was purchased

Again I don't disagree with your point but this is another poor example. De Gea is a baby - he could play potentially for another 20 years.
Spending £16m on a player does not mean that player is necessarily meant to be 1st choice immediately. The fee reflects his age and the fact that we could have him for a long long time and/or sell him and make our money back easily in future.
I think HNIC is matriculated at the same school of thought as Monsieur Rob and Hafi.
TRC how dare you put me in the same bracket as them!
I still think Berba was poor. Fair enough he had technical ability but apart from SAF not managing him properly he wasnt that great a player anyway. Thats just my honest opinion. Also if Diouf was given a fair crack instead of being played on the wing, who knows he may have done a better job than Berba. For what we paid Berba offered very little apart from scoring a lot of goals in games against poor opponents, he could never do it in the big games.
When we signed Berba, and Liverpool signed Keane, I always thought both clubs/players would have done much better if they'd swapped.
I agree. Dont know how Berba would have done at Liverpool but Keane would have suited us much better. Both transfers were flops in the end, I know our fans were divided about Berba but IMO he just wasnt good enough.
One thing about Rooney you can guarantee is he turns up to big games, something Berba doesnt have, maybe its a mentality thing.
This was the time when Liverpool had Torres as their main striker, with N'Gog as their backup.
Maybe Torres and Berba could have worked?
I know this sounds stupid but I was hoping we would have signed Robinho at the time as he went to City.
That way we could have freed up Ronaldo to play up top with Rooney and Robinho either side of him.
