If he does leave, its strange though because of how long he's been at Utd and what he's achieved and his status at the club and to just cut them off just like that if Utd dont make the CL and leave at the first sign of trouble. I don't want Rooney as either part of a deal with Mata or even as a stand-alone deal. This is no reflection on his abilities or him as a player, I just don't think that he is the type of striker that we clearly need. I think that we need a clinical out-and-out fox-in-the-box type striker that does fack all but guarantee lots of goals, not the type of player that will work buckets for the team tracking back into midfield to help out an already congested midfield (admirable though that is).

I don't suppose someone like Jimmy Greaves is available?

If it looks like United are on a downward spiral, which going out of the CL would suggest is true, then it's unlikely he'll want to finish his career trying to get the team back to the top.

DTKF the thing is though having Rooney at Chelsea would have improved them so much this season that it would have been worth strengthening United to strengthen Chelsea...

This is on the assumption that United would have only sold Rooney to Chelsea with Mata coming the other way....

7, its looking like the bid from us were merely to just lay down an early marker. Let Rooney and Utd know we're waiting in the wings when he does decide to go. I dont think Rooney was ever in danger of going this summer but Mourinho just tried to stir the pot a little and he didnt even up the bid that much either. The kind of bids that Mourinho knew would be immediately rejected. Maybe he knows Rooney will not sign a new contract.
