Yikes, thank fack I didn't join this scam.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This was always really really stupid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really. Company makes money off each trade and pays out to players performance based dividends. Pretty decent dividends if you pick the right players too.
Trouble was no football being played = no dividends = no trades being made. And the crash was the fairly inevitable player exodus when the prices started to drop because of lack of dividends. When they restructured the dividends so the rewards dropped then the user base just completely checked out.
Had it not been for the covid pandemic I’m sure it would still be doing pretty well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The trouble I always had with it is that you held 'stocks' in thin air. It looked like a fun idea but just wouldn't sink real money into it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t know anyone who played for the possible increase in player price, that was a bonus but who only had the shares for a fixed period (3 yrs I think).
You played for the dividends mainly and even in the latter days when I joined I was getting circa 5% in dividends. I’m told 8-10% was normal, many got more.
It was running for years before 2020 and covid. I can totally understand if it wasn’t for you - it was always susceptible to outside influences and player lethargy. But it wasn’t a stupid idea.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading the BBC it was nothing to do with player performance but a corporate decision to stop paying out dividends which absolutely crashed the market value of the players apparently.
That was always a danger.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree with the comparisons to a Ponzi scheme.
They tried to emulate a stock market based on player performances, but that's not how the real stock market works.
Dividends had to drop because their wasn't enough new players coming in, and as with any "share" trades someone has to lose , so someone else can win.
This took the worst aspect of the stock market, none of the mechanisms and then paid out dividends from funds raised through the Ponzi element.
I looked extensively at it twice, both times it was pretty clear it was a timebomb.

The Ponzi scheme comparison feels a little bit like a wise-after-the-event media tag to me. Not least because some of the early investors are the biggest losers in the collapse, at least in terms of portfolio value - perhaps dividends even up a bit.
Ultimately it was a system that relied on player trades to generate the income for FI to pay out the dividends. No football meant no dividends and minimal trades.
I don’t think it relied on new players as such because the tenure of ownership meant you had to rotate portfolio. But it absolutely relied on user confidence. That went and the whole thing collapsed.
