People moaned about the European Cup changing all those years ago. People still call for it to go back to that format now. That'll never happen. The Euros has gone from 4, 8, 16, 24 teams in it's history. World Cup started with 13 then had 16 for years until it went to 24, 32 and now up to 48. Things change, and dare I say people still tune in to the Euros and World Cup.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes but aside of hosts and previous winners there are no guaranteed spots at any of those competitions. It's not like England, Germany, Holland and Brazil clubbed together to create a new world cup and ensured they had guaranteed qualification is it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

And this is surely the issue that people have most of all? People keep talking about change....I have no issue with any changes. Even if they're mainly done for financial benefit. What must always be maintained is the sporting integrity that ANYONE can play in them and that nobody is guaranteed to remain in that competition no matter what just because they have more fans/ are more successful in years gone by.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is my problem with it and why I'm so furious at the entitled nature of the club. Over the past 20 years we've not exactly been ever present in the CL and are unlikely to quality this year and deservedly so.

Getting rid of that and having privileged status for 75% of the participants of a competition is an utter joke and an insult to every other club in Europe.

Not something I want any part of.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nobody forces you but there will be billions who will watch it. The new playstation generation want the big games they dont care about Fulham, Eibar or Sassuolo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good for them, I'm just personally not interested.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good luck with the other things in life you will do.

That will be the end of you complaining about future games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That it will be.

Still hoping it doesn't go ahead or if it does go ahead has some sporting integrity but if it does go ahead as planned I'm just not interested.

I guess you guys can be safe in the knowledge whilst watching your football games in China and Dubai at stupid o clock in the morning that at least you don't have to chat to Fred.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Serious question. What actual difference does it make to you? Like myself you don’t attend games, you watch it on the tv. You’re posting as if you’re a season ticket holder and you’ll refuse to attend games. I genuinely don’t understand your outrage. Basically you’re saying that you’re going to stop doing what you’ve always done and that is watching the game on tv.

I don't go to games anymore. It's much less about the physical act of attending as the emotional attachment of years supporting.

The highs, the lows and the many, many 'nearly' years. After a while they become part of who you are. For some of us the very lowest times are defined who they are.

Personally I think this is why so many have reacted so badly to the proposal - because they feel detached from the club in a way they probably haven't before. I know I've reacted emotionally rather than rationally to a certain extent. I know that. Just difficult to do anything else.

Been a supporter of this club for the vast majority of my lifetime. It's been a constant since I was 3 or 4 years old and I've gone through the lows of Hicks and Gillette and Hodgson and the highs of our current period under Klopp and Istanbul.

You don't need to be a regular matchgoer in the L4 post code to be a Liverpool fan. Watching games on TV with my father or other Liverpool supporting friends and hell even sharing in the match day thread with the ups and downs is also part of supporting a club.

Watching my club then try and dismantle a competition which is part of the very lifeblood of the club in the Champions League and something that has brought us enormous highs and an especially fond memory of mine watching the Origi goal in Madrid with my dad on my wedding day and celebrating with him is extremely upsetting for me.

Feels like I've been betrayed by my oldest friend.

The good part of American sport is its cyclical, this new format will just have a small number of clubs competing and that's it. Spurs or Arsenal are there to make up the numbers.

The club is doing the right. Why would liverpool fc be left behind while the other clubs like Man United will play in the new league and will pocket 300m.

Come August the stadium will be packed with fans if there is game between LFC vs Barca.

I'd agree with this but it's an entirely moot point when we were one of the instigators in the first place.

Play Barca 4 times a year and it wont be nearly as special for a start but this is as lso the beginning of us leaving domestic competition altogether from which there will be no way back.

Further more this absolutely will hurt the English game and the quality of the division system. I dont want that.

We were not the instigators of this. This whole idea came from the Juve chairman and Perez.

I read years ago when Agnelli proposed this new competition because their league didnt generate the same tv income as the premier league.

i think its up to the players, if they all refuse to participate what can the clubs do, sack every single player? if nobody plays or agrees to sign surely they'd have no choice?

Juve and the big spanish 2 clubs wanted this long before FSG were the LFC owners.

In 10 years time we will have a new generation of fans who will follow this league and people like you will support Bournemouth playing Burnley. Good luck with that.

So we would have been left behind because two teams Madrid and Juventus would have formed a league? That wouldn't have happened, they needed more teams on board, we happily obliged along with Utd then we persuaded everyone else so far.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I very much doubt anyone needed to be ‘persuaded’.

Yes. Correct. Don't really see what that has to do with it?

Look, this will fvck the league system royally.

The ONLY reason the club are doing it for is for money.

Now whether you care about match going fans or armchair plastic it's STILL going to fvcking the English league system which is an institution absolutely brimming with tradition, memories and records. All in the bin. For money.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
But you’ve still got those memories, they’re not being wiped from the records. Us winning the CL was a million miles away from the circumstances in which we won our European Cups. Do you think those, myself included, who watched the original wins felt cheated because we didn’t win the CL as champions? Not a chance, because everything evolves and changes.

I don’t mean this insultingly, but I don’t believe for a second that you and all the others who are going mad at all this are suddenly going to stop watching and supporting Liverpool the moment this kicks off. You’ll accept it and gradually it’ll become the norm, just like the CL did.

Just for record I’m not exactly for this, it’s the closed shop aspect I don’t like. I’m actually quite pleased that UEFA are being put in their place and I’m enjoying their current panicked state. But it’s going to happen and I suspect eventually it’ll evolve to allow more teams in. And I’ll definitely be watching it.

Why would we be playing Barca 4 times a year?

That would only be the case if every year we are drawn in the same league, and both get to the final.

Every year, there's a good chance that you could go 4/5 years without being drawn in the same side as any particular team etc.

posted on 20/4/21

I'm indifferent to the idea tbh, it's the natural progression and even the CL is slowly changing to ensure elite clubs qualify

The difference here is that it's jumped forward 10 years, it's a format that allows more games and the club's have ownership so get a larger cut. Even if the idea as it is gets shot down, it will continually be the case that UEFA will move the goalposts to get the best clubs in the CL

It's already a closed shop, the romance that anyone can win it is a fools notion
