I really really wouldn’t be judging a player without a huge mound of salt based on their performances for United.

Ugarte would have been a good player for us, without a doubt. If he’s not Slot’s choice then fair enough but pretty much any player that signs for United struggles.

CL tonight but I really don’t get the buzz for the CL that I used to. I really don’t like this new format. Playing every club home and away is what made it special but this new league format is absolute garbage.

If they were so desperate to add two more games why didn’t they just make the groups 5 teams. UEFA doing their best to ruin football.

I don't mind it so far. Think we need to give it a chance until the end of the league phase. The final round could be exciting.

Have you guys tongued each other and made up yet?

I actually like the new format. Seedings made the group stages a bit of a formality in previous competitions.

It is exciting if you want to finish in the top 8 which is our aim.

Im on the fence atm, but it deffo is intruiging

Could be drama similar to the final day of a league season when we reach the last round, teams swapping positions all the time over the 90 mins between the top 8, play off spots and elimination.

But will have to see how close or far apart the teams are by then.

That could be controversial if you play Tuesday and teams on Weds knowing what they need to progress.

Not sure I feel strongly either way yet about the new format, but it is funny UEFA said it's to make games more competitive and then last night we had four 4-0's and a 7-1

The new format needs some time.

People act like they were on the edge of their seats to every game in the group stages.

You probably had like 1 group of death every year...the rest was a formality.

They’ve made it too big and if there weren’t before, then there are now teams that are quite obviously not CL standard.

It’s true the last round of group games could be more exciting but other than that I see zero benefit from a footballing perspective because you just end up with total mismatches in earlier rounds of games anyway.

People talk about seedlings, but every year there were massive teams dropping into the Europa.

It’s clearly driven by money, which means it’s shiiiiiiiiit.

May change my mind as these groups go on but I doubt it.

yh this mixes it up a lot, not having to face teams home and away means you can get lucky in one off games, esp if your draw the tough ones at home.. Throws things up in the air. As it comes to the end itll heat up more, once teams know what they need to qualify.. I imagine come that time there will be a lot more unexpected teams in with a chance at qualifying than we usually see in the old format...

I reckon the new format would be better if there were about 10 less teams in the competition.

I do agree that they just increased the number of teams and number of games for more money though

Yeah this added element in theory should make it exciting. Every game affects every team...it's not just you in your group anymore.

We still need to see it in practice though

There was 5-0, 4-0, 6-0 etc in last seasons group stage. Obviously with more teams this becomes a bigger possibility but also it goes those smaller clubs much needed revenue which could push them on and make them more competitive, rather than just the big clubs taking all the money, all of the time.

People often have a selfish outlook on these things thinking of only their club but don't think of how you can get a more even spread of the money around the smaller clubs from smaller countries to help them grow and therefore in the long term improve the competitiveness they're complaining about. Short term thinking.

Lets see who the last 16 are, old format was always pretty much the expected and favourites? Old format you was lucky to get one or two surprises in the last 16?

Last season the only real surprise for me was Copenhagen taking 2nd over Utd lol.
There was one other group that was tough and could either team could have qualified. Group F Dortmund, PSG, Milan and Newcastle which finished in that order.

Outside that wasn't surprised at all at the ones who qualified from the gorups they qualified from.

That's one season only. Cricket scores still used to happen, but if the current trajectory continues there will be a lot more cricket scores before the next round than a whole season of the old format.
