Lets see who the last 16 are, old format was always pretty much the expected and favourites? Old format you was lucky to get one or two surprises in the last 16?

Last season the only real surprise for me was Copenhagen taking 2nd over Utd lol.
There was one other group that was tough and could either team could have qualified. Group F Dortmund, PSG, Milan and Newcastle which finished in that order.

Outside that wasn't surprised at all at the ones who qualified from the gorups they qualified from.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it will be the usual suspects at the end. If people expect to see more surprises than usual then I reckon they'll be surprised. It might improve with time but this new format looks suss to me.

People often have a selfish outlook on these things thinking of only their club but don't think of how you can get a more even spread of the money around the smaller clubs from smaller countries to help them grow and therefore in the long term improve the competitiveness they're complaining about. Short term thinking.
=====
I agree with the principle but the jury is still out on the methodology. I'm also not sold that this will mean more minutes mey for smaller clubs. That will be the narrative, but upon closer inspection it will probably be a fart in the wind.

Not sure I feel strongly either way yet about the new format, but it is funny UEFA said it's to make games more competitive and then last night we had four 4-0's and a 7-1
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There's ridiculous scorelines all over the place.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There was 5-0, 4-0, 6-0 etc in last seasons group stage.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's one season only. Cricket scores still used to happen, but if the current trajectory continues there will be a lot more cricket scores before the next round than a whole season of the old format.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Season before that there were even more 4-0s, 5-1, 7-1, 7-2 etc.

Same season before that. In fact without going back and checking I'd say you'd find it was similar most seasons.

Put simply some of the qualifiers are not near the same level as the top teams and that gap can only shorten with more income for these teams, which hopefully the new format can help improve.

Is it not the case that most of the extra teams are made up from the top leagues anyhow, which means there are more top teams as a percentage now than there were before?

But will have to see how close or far apart the teams are by then.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That could be controversial if you play Tuesday and teams on Weds knowing what they need to progress.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They all play together in the last round.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ahh good

We'll see if it's the same at the end of season. I don't see how this format will not produce more cricket scores, it will fail to make any meaningful headway in distributor of wealth in football, and ultimately it is the suits and the big clubs that will still benefit the most from this move.

All speculative, we'll see how it goes.

Adding more teams to the CL isn't a part of the format, is it? We're adding poorer teams to the competition and then hoping they get enough money to become competitive. History has shown that's not what happens.

The financial landscape and advantage of rich clubs cannot change without radical changes IMO.

I like the new format so far, feels more intuitive looking at a single league table rather than several groups. Probably won't be any surprises but I know I only used to pay attention to our group in the past, but will probably be a little more invested in the other results now

No, poorer teams weren't added to the format. Four extra teams were added and they came from the top leagues, so there are actually more top teams, rather than more poorer teams.

So Bologna coming to Anfield tonight, but they will never face Liverpool at their own ground. No return legs.

Slot absolutely breezing the media work. He’s making this look easy so far.

I’m very much warming to this guy and I’ve really liked the way he’s gone about his business.

Long way to go, and he’d be the first to say the same, but that makes me like him even more.

Mo Salah btw

Agree with all of this, Slot comes across as two things, very intelligent and very down to earth. Plus he clearly knows a few things about managing football teams

Villa beat Bayern...but I guess it doesn't matter in the new format because it wasn't 11-0 to Bayern
