There is a sure fire way to beat Italy and England have it. However with the media and the fans on England's back about trying to match techinical teams by being technical themselves and with Hodgson's tactics, I don't Hodgson will go with it.

You have to counter Italy, with pace, get in and around them, don't let them settle on the ball. Basically Liverpool's tactics of the second half of last season.

If you try to play them at their own game, like last time, you'll lose. It's time an England manager played to England's strengths. The last time that happened was Euro 96

They aren't in good form at the moment...they beat Fluminense, Brazilian club side the other day - their first win for 7 or 8 games. Included in that run was a 1-1 draw with Luxembourg. Bad form doesn't really count for much though when it comes to Italy, especially during tournaments. I agree its going to be a tight game, I think this will be the lowest scoring group. 0-0 for me.

Italy will probably start with

Buffon

Darmian-Bonucci-Chiellini-De Sciglio

--------------------Pirlo-----------------------

-------De Rossi-Motta-Marchisio--------

-------------Cassano--Balotelli-----------

They won last night.

Still their preparations haven't been ideal & they have struggled recently for form. Although how much can we read into an Italian side in essentially meaningless games?

They don't really do friendlies, preferring to turn up for tournaments when it matters, more often than not.

Could be ideal playing them first off with their 'slow starters' reputation. Can see England drawing. If Italy play to their ability though they' should win, they're a better side & in Pirlo have the one outstanding operator on the international stage in either side.

I actually think we could hammer that team. IF Buffoon does position himself by the corner flag...

Barzagli and Abate will both definitely start. Although I wouldn't be surprised if you did play with both Motta and De Rossi.

No Spurs players in the squad, I guess that means you'll not be watching, considering you're one of those fools who'd rather England fail, so you can laugh at the players who play for rival clubs.

Do they have these idiots in Italy also, Forza?

Whl....cmon now. What I dont get, is if pirlo played for England would he be all that? Stick Gerrard in pirlos place in the italians team and I think they would perform better.

England dont know how to use players; lampard,..gerrard...hoddle...carragher and Beardsley was only used because of injuries.

I wouldn't say pirlo is better, I wpuld say pirlo is "used" better. However, having said that this world cup actually sees gerrard in his club place, so I will be watching pirlo AND gerrard as a direct comparison.

What gives you that impression?

Gerrard has been a class act, forever grateful for what he's done for our club & he's had a pretty decent international career but just think about it for a minute.

Pirlo has been the star performer for Italy for nearly a decade, the best player in both the 2006 & 2012 tournaments in my opinion.

He's virtually been irreplaceable in that set-up. At 35 that remains the case.

Pirlo is past it

Gerrard is better these days

Arouna....vs poland in 86, england had injuries and beardo was called in.

Pirlo may have "past" it but he's still twice as good as Gerrard will ever be in that deep role. Him dominating England in Euro 12 is one of the most mesmerising performances in recent times.
