The facts are simple really

Van Gaal has stated we dont have a top class winger like Ronaldo or Di Maria

Woodward has stated we have money to bid for the best players and we can break transfer records if we want

Di Maria has asked to leave Madrid

Circumstances don't get much better than that

I think this is maybe 1 situation that will give us a clue about where we are

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree 100%. I feel dirty. Add to that, if we screw this up, it is then plain obvious that Ed Woodward is clueless. He may go to PSG for " football reasons", we can all accept that. However, at this present moment, they should not be beating us to him on monetary terms, we are in a far far better situation than they are.

Let's get in LVg's head for a moment.

Say he wants a world class winger, then Di Maria is as good as they come. Then he will have a front 3 of Di Maria, Januzaj and Rooney for the next few years (RVp for a season or two)

Then he wants Strootman so he can have a midfield 3 of Strootman, Herrera and Mata

He bought Luke Shaw for LB, we have Rafael for RB and then he can choose 2 from Smalling, Evans, Jones and Rojo

If we sign Di Maria or even show we are interested, I think it's certain he Is looking to switch back to 433

Switiching to a 4-3-3 is a no brainer. We don't have the right players for 3-5-2. No pace upfront and not good enough players to play wingbacks.

We looked far better against Swansea with actual width. Just a shame our defence was so weak because Swansea didn't even have that many chances.

TBF, there is little to nothing which suggests we will sign him, or are even interested
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Apart from Van Gaal moaning about not having wingers of his quality?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, nothing from either club or the player, there have been with PSG.

IF we are interested, we won't make an offer until deadline day when all other options for Di Maria have passed.

BB

If that happens, then I think we can start to accept there's a problem somewhere

It's no secret Van Gaal wants to play 433 and he has stated we don't have the wingers to play it the way he wants and named Di Maria.

If we don't seriously go after this player, knowing he's a player that would help Van Gaal play the system he wants, then surely somebody somewhere is telling us porkies

In all competitions last season, Di Maria has 27 assists and added 11 goals too

Compare that to our wingers

Those stats were whilst playing in a CM/AMC role though not as a winger.

In the past seasons, he has been erratic playing on the wings. He loses the ball more often than any player iv ever seen

Mostly cos he runs at players so much. don't forget Messi lost the ball more than any player in La Liga a couple years ago. A quite amazing stat tbh.

He only played 6/7 games in AM apparently.

i have asked a Real Madrid fan that and he assures me he played mostly out wide

As BB said, 6 or 7 games at most in the middle

Casillas
Carvajal Pepe Ramos Coentrao/Marcelo
Modric Alonso Di Maria
Bale Benzema Ronaldo

That's how Real lined up most of the season. Jese ahead of Bale at the beginning with Verane mostly being injured.

Di Maria basically played in midfield and left wing. Whenever Ronaldo drifted in he shifted left and he covered defensively a lot.

If Di Maria did join us......I'd be worried if I were Mata.

Di Maria may play at AM, CM or LB he will always play as a winger, running with the ball, beating defenders etc. If we are looking to buy a winger and if Di Maria is available then its a no brainer, He and Robben are the best wingers in the world

Mata is safe, LVG will probably play De Maria, Mata and Januzaj behind Rooney or RVP, or he may swap Januzaj with Rooney, Mata will be the no10 in anycase imo

I Expect a deal for Di Maria with PSG to be signed imminently followed by images of a Woodward effigy being burned outside OT before Di Maria announces he didn't want a move to united (possibly because he hates rojo)

I'm less certain.

He has already said that he prefers Rooney as a 9 OR 10. And he's captain now so he plays. Simple as that.

RVP will play when fit.

Di Maria is likely to be our record signing if he joins and he'll play.

That leaves Mata or Januzaj and people might think Mata is the easy choice. But on the wing, he's nowhere near as effective. I'd prefer Januzaj myself for that wider role.

I think Mata might be in trouble if we do the unthinkable and buy Di Maria.

I could easily beat it with a new article with simply 'Moyes>LVG' as the content
