Will he? In 50 years time when they put together a TV programme of the PL years, will he be touted as a PL great
================
Off course he will. They won't judge you on number of pl medals won. He'll be remembered for what he brought to the premier league - one of the greatest to play in this league..

Stanley Matthews and Gary Linekar never won major titles...

And?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Stanley Matthews is still 60 years on considered one of the greatest players in English history...
He was knighted whilst still playing!

I'm not arguing against that.
I am just questioning whether you can be remembered as a great in a tournament which you have never won.
===============
Well you are arguing against that Elvis! On the basis that he hasn't won it.

The very fact that nearly 25 years into the Premier League we are talking about Steven Gerrard being one of the best Premier League players ever suggests to me that they'll be doing the same in another 25 or 50. Show me a Top 10 Premier League players list on any website, publication or sports station in the world that doesn't include Steven Gerrard - you won't find one.
----------------------------------
I am not saying that people will have forgotten about him in 25-50 years. I am just not so sure he'll be considered a PL great.
I think that he'll be seen as iconic, in the same way that Gazza and Schillaci are remembered as iconic players in the world cup. But I don't think that he will be remembered as a PL great, like those with great talent and who also went on to win the title.

To be honest I think the season where we came 2nd but only lost two games was our best chance. That's never happened before (to lose only two games and not win it) and in that season of the 24 games that Torres and Gerrard were on the pitch together we won 23 (I think). That for me was our best chances as I thought City were excellent last year.

=====================
Squillaci (sp) was famous for certain goals in a world cup and Gazza was never a great because he didn't play enough.
Gerrard played 500 games, scored 100 goals and was voted into the team of the year 8 out of 16 seasons.
Of course he'll be remembered as a Premier League great.

But is he remembered as a great of the then English first division? No, he is remembered as a great player. He is also remembered as a great of the FA Cup due to winning it and actually having the final named after him.
No, he can be considered a world (or at least European) great at club level. But will he go down as a world cup great? Not at the moment he wont. You seem to be confusing the tournament with the planet.
===================
There's no such thing as a world cup great. Outstanding players like Messi who perform at a very top level are classed world great. Same goes for outstanding pl players. Gerrard happens to be one.
"The Palace defeat was much more pivotal"
the palace match was irrelevant
a 6-0 win was the same as a draw or loss
we needed to wiin 9-0 to even have a chance
the league was over after the Chelsea match
oh, and Stevie is an all time PL great. Legend even. I can't name a midfielder you could definitively say was better. Equal, yes. Better, no.

Talk about splitting hairs.
He's remembered as a great of the English game. He was playing in the English First Division for most of his career so I seriously doubt he's remembered as a Seria A or La Liga great. Therefore, I'm led to believe that he'd be considered an English First Division great...

I agree.
It's simple - was Le Tissier a PL legend?
if the answer to that is yes, then irrefutably, Gerrard has to be too.
I don't think you have to win it to be remembered as a great of the competition.

He was a Southampton legend.
Again, I'd say he was an iconic PL player, but not a great.
It's going to be really bizarre to see him in a different kit
