we were spoilt to have Vieira, Gerrard, Scholes, Keane, Essien, Lampard all playing at the same time. Makalele too. Alonso and Mascherano.

gluttony of CM talent
--------------------------------------------------------------------

To be fair, look at what we have now. Fabregas, Matic, Yaya, Carrick. We're not really struggling that badly for talent.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
only Yaya is in that talent bracket for me.

Cesc is excellent but fell that half tick short of the top tier.

Matic needs to show it more than a half season.

Carrick is a full tier and half below

Aguero could be, in a few years. Hart, not a chance. Seaman, Schmeichel, VdS, Reina have all offered more.

What's more... If you consider Hart a great, does that make De Gea a PL great? He's only been here a few years.
-------------------------------------

That depends whether you consider his performances in a title winning season to be of a high enough standard. Was his contribution good enough?

Couldn't agree more.

That first list is just exquisite.

Elvis, what's the difference between an icon and a great?
------------------------------------

An icon is someone that is regarded as a representative. Gazza was an icon of Italia 90, but he won't be remembered as a great of the tournament. That would be the likes of Klinsmann, Voller & Matthaus.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Eh?! Rudi Voeller as a great of the tournament?? The only thing he's really remembered for is the spitting incident with Rikjaard. Klinsmann was ok in that tournament but not great.

Great player missing one key ingredient, the desire and ambition to succeed and challenge himself in a different environment out of his comfort zone.
-----------------

I think that is unfair. Do we criticise Messi fot not leaving Barca?

---

He contributed loads, but being a big part of a title winning team surely can't be the only benchmark. Shearer only won one title, despite being the leagues all time top scorer...

Anyone who says Gerrard is not a PL great is just embarrassing themselves.

Aye that's fair enough

The point I was making was that we're not just stuck with Allens, Hendersons and Cleverleys - there is still some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for!

At 34? Nope, he's milking his last cash cow, good luck to him, but playing in the mls is not a step up is it, or a challenge

Like Lampard was? Who is now banging them in for fun at City...

This^
Matic has the potential, but isn't there yet. Fabregas is the debatable one. World class on his day but can go missing/seem like a weakness when his team isn't performing.

I am not penalising him. Just asking the question of whether you can be considered a great of a competition that you haven't won.
=================

Are you asking the question now? Or are you disagreeing with everyone who says that he is clearly a premier league great?
------------------------

I am asking the question so that people can give their opinions whilst offering mine. It is a football forum - isn't that what we do. There is no right or wrong answer - just opinions.
================

And now that everyone has given an opinion that he is a PL great has this changed your mind at all and if not what is the point of debate?

Yeh, maybe not Voller. Brehme probably had a better tournament to be fair.

Glad someone got the reference though.

And he left his home thousands and thousands of miles away to challenge rather than playing for River Plate or whoever in his hone league.
Gerrard wouldn't even move 219 miles to London.

What is the point of any debate on here? It doesn't change anything.
