Mudd, you're doing your usual strawman argument designed to muddy a very clear debate.

Thousands of people will die building this world cup. It doesn't matter what nationality the companies are that are doing it. It's happening on Qatari soil and the people in charge of Qatar are letting it happen when they can very easily not let it happen.

You're basically saying that you're prepared to let these innocent people die just because you disagree with the governments of the US and the UK going to war illegally.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Robb we talked about this. When we got to Qatar we realised their oil and gas industry was not set up to international standards and accidents happened.

We worked with the Qataris to sort out their regulation and legislation and today their standards are at par with ours and their disposal of produced water for instance is better than the EU standard.

This demonstrates clearly they are willing to work to change things. The construction companies alas do not give 2 shts about the workforce and have not bothered to work with the regulators. This in my humble opinion is wilful negligence on their part as they will not do this anywhere else in the West. Some may even go so far as to label it a form of racism.

I cannot understand how people are not enraged with these contractors who have a duty of care to their workers but be upset with the Qataris who are not the ones building the stadia.

It is selective outrage fueled by bias and I find it completely dishonest

With all your talk about illegal wars MUDD, you must have been going spare when Germany got the 2006 World Cup.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Unlike you guys I have not set up criteria as to what is a good or bad host
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fifa do/did though (appropriate host).

Whether we feel Qatar is a suitable country or not is irrelevant, Fifa themselves deemed Qatar to be unsuitable.

For me that is the fundamental point here. If Fifa initially concluded (after their relevant stress tests) that Qatar was an appropriate candidate then fair enough. They didn’t.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree with this. My issue is why are people holding Qatar to a standard they do not apply to others.

Do the Qataris not contract out the construction of stadiums and set their own human rights, employment and health and safety laws? Or should western companies do that all for them and Qatar shoulder none of the responsibility?

I love reading these threads and the faux outrage. It always makes me smile how people argue as if they are crusaders of right and wrong. Defenders of equality etc

This is football. You know the sport where during major competitions eg WC the abuse of women goes through the roof.

Special measures are taken when england lose as the A and E Dept's and women's hostels will be busy that night due to beatings

The homophobic chanting will be in full flow and the only player ever to come out ended up killing himself

Don't get me started on what went on in Brazil with regards to slavery and deaths etc. But let's turn a blind eye as it is Brazil

People campaigned against Brazil as well. There were campaigns in the streets, worries over the stadiums not being ready, worries over the treatment of the workforce etc. This just gets more coverage do to the obvious corruption at FIFA and the bidding process. Blame the media, not the people.

Oh and if you read about FIFA's role in WC you will find that FIFA are like a country in itself.

What i end is that when bidding for a WC countries literally hand everything to FIFA and agree that only fifa laws will apply during the competition. Fifa even have military control so ships and aircraft at the ready

Qatar is what it is but any deaths etc re on FIFA's head s they can impose whatever conditions they like for the competition

Well, we did it for them in the oil and gas industry because their standards were not up to scratch. Why have the construction companies refused to?

Qatar does not know better, the companies do. So why are they not helping them out? Do you not see how bad this is? They know they are better standards but choose not to apply them, safe in the knowledge people like you would not be bothered

Well in the secularist society you are advocating, people would be forced to respect British and Christian culture which doesn't include anything multi-cultural

Qatar does not make the same claim.

I do not know all the ins and outs of which company is responsible for construction or who is hiring the labour, all I know is that people are dying because of this World Cup being hosted in a country with unethical human rights, employment and health and safety laws.

You keep questioning the moral compass of people you don't know though.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

FIFA don't condone the beating of women at the World Cup (which couldn't be more irrelevant here).

By awarding the World Cup to Qatar, they are condoning the way qatar treats its workers and the way they will treat fans.

This is to do with what FIFA can easily affect. It is not easy or probably possible to stop people being beaten during the word cup, it is possible for FIFA not to award the word cup to a country that will kill thousands of workers in doing so
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is either naive or ignorance with regards to women and condoning by FIFA

Every WC virtually throws up issues that get laughed off or not overly discussed.

Even in this WC gone there was for example the t-shirts with Brazilian women with suggestive wording. The focus on bikini clad women in adverts etc and slogans like women are welcome.to watch as long as they shut up etc.

The racism of Russians and Croatians and even Germans against Ghana and the homophobic chanting by the Mexicans which was explained as "pressuring" the opponent

And as I said spikes in domestic violence in countries like the UK who weren't even hosts. Some reports say an england win results in 20% spike and a loss can be 50%.

I do because their outrage is selectively applied. The best way to get a country to move forward is not to distance yourself from it but to educate it.

Rome was not built in a day. This is why I am quite pleased they have the world cup. It will do the country and the region a world of good
