Mr C, just playing devil's advocate. This is an issue I have experience in and people do not fully appreciate the background to it.

These countries are a few generations behind us in terms of development. As a result of their resources, they have been forced to make jumps that took us decades to make in a few years.

They are not evil, they just need to understand why things need to be done in a safer way. It is a cultural thing, same with a lot of their views. Exposure and interaction with the outside world helps them no end.

We have made mistakes in the West and have learnt from them, these people will learn from theirs as well. Pontificating to them without understanding the context is silly.

Britain went through this as did the USA, Europe and Australia. It is all part of a nation developing. I prefer to be on the side helping them and we achieved that in the oil and gas industry.

Sadly the construction industry cannot be arséd and only think about money

In Qatari court does a woman's testimony have equal weight?

That's if they are able to catch up. However, isn't that the reason why Fifa give these countries the World Cup anyway? To develop their football at least to be as good as the better countries.

This is why I keep asking people whether they have been to Qatar.

If you watch teams from the ME in the world cup and North Africa, they kiss each other on the cheek and hug.

I remember the first time I moved there. When people got to know me, there were hugs, kisses on the cheek etc. It was unsettling.

People just seem to latch on to things they have heard but not seen.

I asked someone here how many policemen had arrested people in shorts and vests. Silence.

How do you engage with such views?

Weare , I went to Saudi a few years ago and the greeting was a hug and a kiss on the cheek by the men.

It was strange. In my culture hugging is normal but growing up here in UK it feels awkward initially even for me with even family.

But then I absolutely loathe the whole female relatives kissing both cheeks etc too.

Depends on the court. Religious one, I do not think so.

Women in the ME are not as dominated as some people think

Have you ever got into an argument with one? Or haggled with one

There are a lot of women that have risen to powerful roles in Qatar Petroleum State owned oil company) as well.

Yeah it did say on wikipedia that Qatar are one of the more progressive ME countries regarding women's rights.

No you didn't

You asked if anyone had seen any vest wearing policemen making arrests

I rephrased the question, went over your head again?

On a separate note Cammy's been caught fiddling expenses.

So whoever mentioned it can't actually say that Qatar can't have the World Cup. Although, I would have preferred it to have been in a more poor, long lasting nation in the World.

This is the problem mate, just last week gay people in Ireland could not get married.

In the USA, there are states where you can get fired for being gay and is a criminal offence in some.

These are developed nations, imagine a part of the world that is just developing.

This is what I find frustrating. My views on qatar or any other issue isn't a justification of certain goings on, its highlighting the hypocrisy, for want of a better word, or ignorance being spouted. The whole women homosexuality and beer arguments without facts of you will.

I wanted to move abroad for a few years just for life experience with the family and when researching on forums I can't get over how complimentary, in the main, UK and US people are of Qatar. Sure they complain but its about drivers and roadworks.

One of the main topics is the alcohol issue, and most people their don't have an issue. They name places like Garvey's as better than the hotels. They speak of night life and jazz clubs etc

Women in particular love it and although they say don't go around in a bikini they feel safer and only issue seems to be how hard it is to find schools.
They reckon about 42% of the workforce is females there and it's about 47% in the UK

As for homosexuality then the laws tend to be same for heterosexuals in terms of public display. As we said men holding hands and walking down the street and hugging and kissing in greeting is the norm.

Heat and corruption etc I can see as arguments. The rest is I don't know what. Also if you look at WC in South Africa etc you will see FIFA are the law in essence during the games
