James Cameron is the highest grossing director then?
Or has someone achieved cumulatively more than him

I could he wrong and cinema could change as we know it forever but whatever your views on the artistic merits of mainstream movies they were making record amounts of money despite competing with streaming, YouTube, social media, video games efc.

I feel it was the last push of cinema.
Home.cinemas are catching up to the basic cinema experience and sometimes out-doing them in terms of quality.
The lack of idiots talking or on their phones is a huge plus.

Heston is the most bankable star in the world inflation adjusted.
Biblical epics seem kind of funny now, but as Passion of the Christ and Prince of Egypt show, there still is a big conservative Christian audience especially in the US.

I doubt this, but we will see. I think people will clamour for social engagement and interaction when this is over.

You might feel differently but actually the best experience in cinemas I have felt one with the audience and the collective feeling of laughing, being scared, or being emotional with strangers is quite wonderful
Also, there simply is no profitable method of home streaming $200m movies on day of release. That is the issue. I doubt they will find one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Disagree completely on the collective feeling. Especially the fear factor. Being alone or with only a couple other people at home being scared outta your mind > watching horror at the cinema where YOU KNOW some ass hole will crack a joke or laugh or ruin it and completely change the mood of the room. Happened when I saw Hereditary and countless others.
Comedies meh...don't need others to laugh. Nah agree to disagree on that front.
But I would also think charging full price steaming opening weekend coupled with cinema opening weekends should be more than profitable for movie companies. Maybe not so much cinemas. The only people I see missing out in that business format is babysitters
oh hey, nah seeing a great film with a vested audience is special. going to see a film with a few people is not the cinematic experience for me.
Secret Cinema seeing Back to the Future and Empire Strikes Back. Memories...

I understand that but how often is that the case? Lots of inconsiderate, rude people about who enjoy ruining the experience more often than not.

I would add that even if you have no interest in IP like Thor or Star Wars, it is the viability and business models of those kinds of movies that will last the tone for how indie movies and dramas and comedies of a more distinctive creative nature are funded in the industry.

I mean that indie movies do not live in silos and rely on mainstream interest in movies and a thriving movie culture. Also, the less successful IP movies are, the less the risk taking studios are.
Also most people first get into movies through mainstream studio fare, very few people first get into movies watching Paul Thomas Anderson movies or Charlie Kaufman movies
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes and no. Indie filmmakers or companies have little to do with the success of mainstream blockbusters. Thats the whole point ffs. But I agree a thriving movie culture benefits everyone. I dont feel that without blockbuster success that indie films would disappear if thats the suggestion.
I know for myself my interest in film had little to do with blockbuster or mainstream film. It was getting my first video rental card and then just digging deep for anything and everything.

Cohen Brothers remake of Ladykillers, is superb.
Tom Hanks plays the Alec Guinness role and it is a joy to watch.......Ealing comedy meets the deep south, but it works😀
Sorry got a bit busy npe. I'll reply to that later...but I suspect it's another agree to disagree topic for us.
