Her live version of "Aeroplane" featuring D'influence on later with Jools Holland from around 93 was excellent

Mary Anne Hobbs can be a bit annoying at times but the music she's played this week has been fantastic.
Giles Peterson was great last week as well.

Yeah the Giles Peterson stint was really great. I know she's not for everyone, but I really like MAH. When everything is getting hectic at work, she has a very relaxing effect... a bit like the Galaxy bunny all those years back

She does play some fantastic music too. That Julia Kent song from Tuesday's show... brilliant stuff!

LL is okay, but I often prefer those standing in for her. Gideon Coe and Tom Ravenscroft are so much better than Lamacq I could almost feel sorry for him... if only he didn't play so much crap 90s indie

I downloaded that Julia Kent tune straight away.

Can't stand Lamacq and his early 90's students obsession.

Have you heard any of the EL VY stuff?

Yeah I thought all the songs I heard were pretty great. Really excited for the album to drop Next National album already in the works too from what I've heard too

It's a bit of a strange album to nail down, Wump. At first I thought it sounded like they'd rushed it and it sounded like they were treading water a bit. Yeah songs like Sea Of Love and I Should Live In Salt instantly grabbed me, but there were more that passed me by than stuck with me.

Listening to it more (and more) I think what the real problem with it is, though it starts and ends well, unlike previous albums, it sags quite a bit in the middle. Heavenfaced and Slipped are decent songs, but they frame two songs that aren't great - by The National's usual standard, anyway.

However, Pink Rabbits - one of songs that on early listens I really thought was rehashing older and better songs (Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks) - is now one of my favourite songs by the band. The lyrics particularly poignant to me, unfortunately... (NO NOT THE BIT ABOUT BEING A WHITE GIRL IN A CROWD OF WHITE GIRLS!! )

It's still no Boxer, Alligator or High Violet, but it's not bad by any means.

7/10 maybe?

The EL VY songs I've heard (only two so far) have really grown on me. Just love MB's voice.

I had the exact same reaction in the beginning as you and I rated it at around 3.5/5 but it grew on me to around a 4.6/5. Songs like Humiliation and Pink Rabbits didnt do much for then they are amongst the bands best work imo. It is as good as Boxer imo.

Disagree with you on Slipped and Heavenfaced, the latter esp. They are top top tracks. Not a single weak point in the record actually, maybe Fireproof which is still a decent track.

I am with you about Pink Rabbits Resonates with me so much and is currently my most played track alongside Geese of Beverly Road

Geese Of Beverly Road is a wonderful song. If I had to pick just one song by them, it would be tough, but probably it would have to be Baby We'll Be Fine. Didn't see them on the TWFM tour, but the couple of times I saw them previously they didn't play it... well in fairness they started it at the RAH show, cocked it up and didn't try it again

Graceless is better than This Is The Last Time, but neither really does it for me. Just listening to the former now (to check ) and it sounds like it could've been an off cut of any of their previous albums. Sorry TITLT is fairly unremarkable apart from the ending, which only stands out because it sounds so incongruously tacked on.

Hey, I still love them, even though one of my mates told me the Dessner brothers follow the EPL... and both hate Arsenal.

Graceless is an amazing song man, better than TITLT for sure. I love it esp because it is the only driving track in the whole album which is very laid back in general. I couldnt pick a top 10 National song leave alone a single fav!! All the song get a time when they are my most played

In that case The National are even better than I thought

Maybe not 2000-10, just heard 'stevie' and 'treat' from kasabians newest album- absolutely brilliant stuff.

Iove how 'treat' goes from a Monday's style catchy groove to a proper new order style dance number, first class stuff.
