I do think Rian had to pick up the decision that JJ had made to make Luke a hermit, so JJ has to take some of the weight of that decision too.
It still could have been better though (throwing the lightsaber was awful).

I couldn't stand how poorly Rey's character and story arc were constructed. There's absolutely nothing interesting about her as a character. If anything it does a massive disservice to the idea of a strong female lead character because she's so utterly one dimensional from start to end and has no character growth whatsoever. She starts off flawless and indestructible and ends up flawless and indestructible lol
Compare that to Luke's incredible journey from naive and slightly clueless farmboy to master Jedi Knight over three movies. Now that's a story arc and character growth/evolution.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think Rey had all the ingredients to be a great character. The execution failed her.
They could have built a great arc where they showed that you didn't need to have a special friend or lineage, to become something great.

Well said… I mean we saw Luke get shot in the ass.
He could lift the X-Wing from the swamp.
Got his hand sliced off..
nothing happened to Rey. I agree with Guv, Force Awakens does set up some nice stuff, my only gripe was Han dying so pathetically and the end battle with StarKiller base… but overall, a nice set up.

Agreed but they could easily have come up with a better reason as to why he was in exile.
Maybe he went into a force hibernation or coma, where he was receiving further training from force ghosts such as Yoda or Obi Wan or even better, his father!

I didn't like Force Awakens but it now looks like a masterpiece compared to the two movies that followed it. If they'd just have left all three movies with JJ instead of letting Rian Johnson butcher the second movie beyond all recognition then we might actually have seen a worthy Luke Skywalker in the second movie. And not such a ridiculous third movie that was always going to be up against it following on from the abomination that was Last Jedi.
I think Rian would have ruined the franchise, if they gave him all 3 films. Based on episode 8, he seemed focused on going away from the actual lore and instead, making it more about the newer characters and adding new concepts and ideas to SW.
A perfect example of this was his treatment of Luke, which negated everything that came before.
But he then added the force connection between Rey and Kylo, which I thought was a brilliant idea and deserved further exploring.
To end on a more positive note, TLJ is possibly the worst SW movie in the franchise, but here are some scenes I did like:
- Rey and Kylo force connection
- Luke going inside the Falcon and R2 playing him Leia's message from episode 4.
- Snoke before his death
- Space battles
- Force ghost Yoda
- The ship jumping to hyperspace through the Star Destroyer
- Luke and Leia reuniting

The image on the Walkers facing Luke.
The Hologram was great idea, until it wasn’t.
It is the best looking film of the 3.
The Falcon chase in the caves at the end was very nice.
Kylo and Rey teaming up.
kylo could have been a great character, he had all the ingredients and played by a strong actor but they completely wasted him.
Snoke was plenty interesting enough to be the main villain as well.
In isolation the emperor and the thousand ship secret fleet thing was interesting enough, just too much had gone before to make it work in the story being played out.
I implore you lot to watch Bad Batch..
I think, they attempting to retcon the Sequels. And dare I say it, they could be onto a winner here.
Saying that, let me add, whatever holes they fill in the sequels, it won’t be able to save them.. but still could make certain plot points intriguing

I believe what they’ll do, is in a few years, will throw a bucket load of money to the 3 guys Finn, Rey and Po, and bring them back, to give them a good story, they deserved in the first place, and usher in a new generation.. but they will still be very young enough to have the story centred around them.

They'd have done that first time round if they knew what they were doing. And nobody even cares much about Finn, Rey and Po anyway. I can only even remember all their names because you're reminding me. I think they need to bury this trilogy and do their best to pretend it never happened. Ideally retcon the whole thing but that won't happen as long as Darth Kennedy is still around.
Well, thing is, you do have a generation of younglins, that love Rey and Finn, and Po.
I wonder how much, but they are out there.
They can’t just ignore them.... well, I mean they could.
But there was hints that Finn is Force Sensitive.
Rey walking around with the Skywalker name, has to create some drama somewhere.
I don't know man, comparing Luke, Han and Leia to Rey, Finn and Po is like comparing a gourmet burger to a rustlers in my opinion. I don't think there's much if any demand to see more of them.
At this point I'd prefer them just to recast Luke, Han and Leia with younger actors and carry the story after ROTJ in the proper way. Use the Thrawn story from the original books. Like they should have done first time round.
