Come on he may have been decent for Liverpool so far this season but he was awful last night, lets not be so blinkered here.

. Can't believe it a month into a new season and downing's a world beater!!! do me a favour

Tarnblue since 1968.....do you have difficultly reading? There were about 15 posts before yours and at no point did anyone claim he was a world beater. I'd have a £20m Downing over a £26m Milner any day.

Batman, you must have been watching a diffferent game mate, as Downing and Young were the only ones who had a decent game last night. But then we shouldn't expect you to have anything good to say about an Liverpool player should we?

He did well for the goal apart from that he was pants.

they paid 18 and got rid of the useless Ireland.

Ing - ger -lund were pants full stop. Watching Ramsey running rings around Lampard in the second half summed the overall performance up. Young and Downing were two of the rare positives following another insipid display from the national team.

Agreed.

I wrote an article criticising Downing last night on the England board, as typical with a lot of Liverpool fans on here i got labelled a WUM immediatly.

My honest opinion is that whilst he can look good at club level, he's not cut out for international football.

I really dont get people prasing him for last night, he was truely shocking apart from the cross for the goal.

My Downing thread for anyone who's interested.....

You are right Albert I don't understand why Capello likes him so much, even when Young was (laughably) being compared to Messi/Ronaldo a few years back and Downing was captaining his team to relegation he preferred the latter.

Downing very one dimensional IMO and is easily being found out at International level, I genuinely can't think of a single game where he was one of our best players never mind just a decent performer. For Liverpool he has been ok aswell, I don't understand how people think he has justified his pricetag. One or two glimpses of class doesn't justify any pricetag never mind a £20M one, his overall contributions have been poor.

For Liverpool he has easily been one of our better players so far this season, Yes it's early days, but the signs look good. I take it Batmanu that you have watched all LFC games this season to make this analysis? For obvious reasons, i would be completely unsurprised if you had.

I watched your first 2 games and the first 60 minutes against Bolton. He was poor against Sunderland, he had that one moment of class where he nearly scored an amazing goal and that alone has been used to say he had a good performance when it was anything but.

He was decent against Arsenal I admit, gave young league debutant Jenkinson a tough time but at the end of the day he never really did anything. He again had a decent game against Bolton but as was the same against Arsenal, no end product. Yesterday he showed some good work for the goal but before and after that he was awful, in fact leading up to the goal was probably the worst English player on the pitch along with Milner.

Basically I don't know how you can write an article a couple of games into the season where Downing has literally not contributed to a single goal and claim £20M was a good price.

The same way you can come on here slagging Carroll off for nor performing, a few matches into the season, I'd imagine?

it's amazing how fans see games differently

Although Downing faded in the second half, I thought he was England's best player in the first half

Overall Young and Downing were the pick of England's players and Rooney's performance was purely down the the manager. He was totally isolated and double (sometimes treble)marked when in forward positions. He had to come deep just to get space

I didn't think Barry was as bad as people are saying but Milner and Lampard behind Rooney does not work.

In truth, and England first XI should be trouncing Wales and I blame themanager more than any individual player. They didn't pick themselves did they

Carroll has been with you since January and like Torres who is ridiculed continuously has done nothing to show he is worth his price tag.

Fair enough i'm not going to argue he's looked good for Liverpool (i haven't watched you).

My point is he's out of his depth in international football, everytime i see his its rabbits in the headlights stuff.

It'll be the same if Liverpool ever get back into Europe, he's ok in league games but as soon as he gets to the big stage he'll crumble.

Just my opinion

Hmm. What is this based on? Their salaries? Their ego's?

From what I saw. England shouldnt be trouncing anyone. There's only one world class player in the England side. Rooney. Thats it. The rest are just good premier league players. Wales gave England a good match and if they had more firepower up front. Im sure they could have scored one or two given how rubbish England were playing..

Downing Rubbish
Young Rubbish
Lampard Rubbish
Milner really Rubbish
Smalling Rubbish
Barry Rubbish
Rooney Rubbish

At the end of the day if you're English you're in all likelihood a rubbish international footballer

Because England is a footballing nation with one of the best (if not the best) in the world. Comparethat to the Welsh league

Of course England should be beating that Wales team comfortably

That Wales side had a couple of decent players and if England cannot find XI players that can't paste them, then something is wrong with the setup.

Wales are not in the World's top 100. Why would we not expect to paste them at home?

Downing reminds me a little of Walcott, only with a better delivery.

Not much skill or technical ability, but a solid prem player.

Walcott is not a winger. He's shown so many times he does not have the capability to dribble with the ball without falling over himself or running into defenders.

hahaha

I once played golf with a chap called Steve Perfect

When I was introduced to him I laughed and asked him why people call him that

He replied 'because it's my name'

Cue red face.

True story

"Walcott is not a winger"

I pretty much agree, and am tempted to go further...

Walcott is not a footballer.

posted on 7/9/11

Hardly, he's been a decent winger but he's been on the periphery of an England side that's been crying out for a decent left winger for years now. If he had been as good as you say he was over the last 5 years that spot would be his by now but it's not.

------

Well I, unlike you, don't use England as a key to measure quality. This should be obvious given the donkeys that make the starting XI
