Did anyone actually look at this link?

Can't see many people claiming Downing is great, even when he was at Villa...

... comes on redconn and knotty, going to read it?

Not quite sure what you're getting at?

In my opinion its nowhere near as bad as the abuse Chelsea players get

--------------------

To be fair they deserve it. Ashley Cole for being Ashley Cole, Terry for getting it on with his teammates missus, and Fat Frank for being a very average footballer who was lucky enough to play in a good Chelsea team.

posted on 7/9/11

Well YOU think Chelsea players get singled out for abuse my rival fans the most.

Albert thinks Man U fans the same.

Knotty thinks Liverpool players get it more.

There MUST be some link here....

I never said he was a world beater but that article has one page of divided opinions. So far today this article is up to its fifth page and there has been at least one other article stating he shouldnt be picked for England.

"a very average footballer who was lucky enough to play in a good Chelsea team. "

A very average footballer who was once voted 2nd best in the world.

I'm not a huge Lampard fan, however the above comment is beyond stupid.

Steven Gerrard's got a rap sheet as long as my arm (I've got long arms) but he gets nowhere the abuse that Frank Lampard gets. That's not even up for debate. Stevie Me gets a free ride while Frank gets it in the neck from all and sundry.

Mr Chelsea - see above.

Just for what it's worth, Knotty DOES have a point on this. Only going from what get's posted on the LFC boards because I never go anywhere else, but LFC players get slated whenever they play for the England team; always have done, always will.

I've no doubt this happen to Man U players on the Man U boards, Chelsea players on the Chelsea boards and so on - it's just the way things are.

Now some of you may be slating Downing because you genuinely believe he's a weak player - whatever rocks your boat. But there are just as many WUMS who will be slating him purely because he is a Liverpool player. Not pointing any fingers because it's impossible to prove - you can toss out any old 'I've always thought he was carp' in reply.

And have you read some of the comments on this thread, including my own?

You'll find them rather similar to those on the thread I posted from last year; many people think he's a decent player, but not up International standard.

To claim that people have suddenly started offering a different opinion since he started playing for Liverpool us ludicrous and, quite frankly, pathetic.

Did Owen get slated much when he played for England and Liverpool?

I dont think so, to my memory...

A bit of common sense can determine between the two imo - usually when people spend time explaining the reason behind their opinion.

To just brush them all away as knotty has done is childish, and gives off the air of a complex imo.

From Not606 - Should Liverpool sign Downing?

Didi Hamann? DayDoDoeDontDayDoe - 17/06/2011, 09:40 AM
For me he should be someone we go for if we DONT get our primary targets

--------------------

Lucaaas - 17/06/2011, 10:18 AM
He never dribbles past people, his crossing is erratic at best and he's failed at the only high level he actually played at (England).

His goals weren't very impressive in that clip either, they were just a collection of tap-ins and deflected goals.

Would much prefer Juan Mata.

Ze Liverbird - 17/06/2011, 10:20 AM
I've always said I'd much rather Albrighton to Downing, and I maintain that. I just can't see Kenny forking out £15m+ for a 26 year old that hasn't attracted the radar of any of the other top clubs.

Albrighton or Mata for me.

You know its true, just last season when Villa were challenging for CL football he was mysteriously poor when he came back from injury and had a grand total of 2 assists throughout the season, now when Villa dropped down to his average mid-table level he's doing well all of a sudden, surprise.

He's midtable mediocrity, just like Pennant, Keane, Konchesky etc.

-----------------

Corbo - 17/06/2011, 02:06 PM
Because he is suited playing for a mid-table club.

Sir bow4fowler - 17/06/2011, 10:09 PM
Oh god Downing. No.

suarezlfc - 17/06/2011, 10:13 PM
Fair point realy. I don't know a lot about Matta. But what I do know is Downing is the definition of average. Exactly the sort of player we should not sign.

That article had one page. This article and others have more than one page. Why did the article from the days he was at Villa only have one page?

True that

I've even seen a post where someone has said Rooney is rubbish again.

I think there is an element of tribal behavior when itcomes to England. Fans WANT players from rival clubs to underperform for England. It's too much to take for some United fans (OR total joy for some Liverpool fans) to watch Rooney having a stinker whilst Gerrard is playing fantastic.
We can't get that club rivalry out of our heads and united for England (Something I think was happening with the players themselves in SA)

However

It maybe that some just think player a is total pants.

I thought Downing and Young were England's two best players last night but considering the performance by the team, it doesn't mean they played brilliant, they didn't

Downing may improve under different coaches now who knows. Young seems to have gone up a level already from his AV days.Downing may do something similar, who knows

Adam Johnson may deserve a starting position, that's an opinion, but considering the competition he has for a place in City's XI, AJ may drop out of the England setup altogether

He has SWP written all over him for me

Well Redknapp, Mourinho, Ranieri, Scolari, Hiddink, AVB, Hiddink, Mclaren, Capello, Sven etc and other successful managers in world football don't seem to share your view. Then again what do they know, their knowledge is clearly futile compared to yours

Talk about grabbing at straws.

The number of pages means didley squat - it doesn't tell us what people's opinions are.

More pages may be becuase Liverpool are a bigger club, and more people are on the boards to contribute. It might also mean that Liverpool fans respond differently to Villa fans, which creates a separate debate...

So what?! All that means is that he had one very very good season.

The Chelsea team then included Makalele sat deep, Essien, Robben, Duff, and Drogba.Fat Frank's only job in that team was to make late run into the box and score goals, which to be fair to him he did well. But he can't tackle, he can't run with the ball or get passed a player, he has little pace, he is a decent passer of the ball but nothing amazing. He scores goals, and that isn't enough for a midfielder in my opinion

Fat Frank is a very one dimensional footballer. Maybe I was a bit harsh calling him a avergae footballer, he is a decent footballer.

Because of him, we've continously had to shift better players to different positions in the England team to compensate; Scholes,Gerrard and now even Scott Parker.

Batmanu, I'm sure if we had the time or inclination - neither of which I have - we could post just as many responses saying 'yes'. It's all well and good posting 'evidence' which you've gone out of your way to prove YOUR point, but you'll forgive my cynicism...

askdannyjeeves, I take your point - but Knotty's point is also valid, IMO. And to be honest your posts to him and about him - 'childish', 'moronic', 'pathetic' etc - is obviously going to wind people up on here. Not that's why you're here...

Appreciate the sentiment, but no one should be above criticism imo.

Knotty has, on this thread, behaved very strangely.

BTW, I actually like Lamps and Cole. Not 100% sure of Terry, but that's just my opinion, not fact.
