If there are two types of Zionism - the original term and a new term coined by critics of Israel - it is very easy for someone to claim they are simply a critic of Israel while hiding in plain sight and being an opponent of Israel actually existing too.

I find it strange the same name can have two meanings. Is it done on purpose? Is there an ulterior motive? Is this why the terms Jews and Israelis are interchangeable in debates by some as if they are one entity?

Israel was there thousands of years ago, and jews lived there before christ or islam.
Paleztine was a newbie, relatively.

Most states came about through war, invasion, mgration etc.

I've always been confused about the term anti Semitic in its meaning of anti Jew, whe nthe Semitic races are more than just the tribe's of Isreal and include Arabs.
Philistines have been fighting the Israelites for millennia. This is just the most modern phase.

The Balfour Declaration was a letter dated 2 November 1917 from the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. It read:

"His Majesty's government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.[1][2]"

Sorry, been doing something else. But I did look into this briefly earlier (knowing shamefully little about it), and I came to the following draft overview :

- thousands of years ago the land was regarded by the jews as the land of judea

- until the 20th century, the land had for at least 2 thousand years been the home of (christian and muslim) arabs, with a smattering of jewish people

- for the last few hundred years, this arab occupied land had been a part of the ottomon empire

- somewhere in the early 20th century, britain and america formed a policy of supporting the relatively new movement to create a modern day home for jewish people in palestine

- after the end of ww1, britain took control of palastine upon the defeat of the ottomon empire (which had been aided by the arabs rising up against the ottomons to support the british)

- in the 1930s the british government issued a declaration of intent to create a home for jewish people in palestine, without affecting the rigts or practises of the arab people

- in 1948 this was formalised into a plan to partition palestine into an arab state and a jewish state, roughly 50/50.

- jewish representatives accepted the plan, the arab people of palestine rejected it. It was approved by the UN

- the jewish state invaded most of the palestinian state and left a tiny bit of it for the arabs

- america and the west supported the israeli actions, and gave them billions of dollars to buy weapons.

- the arabs continue to seek to get part of their land back, and when they take military action the israelis bomb the shti out of them

Take 2. Forgive me if my dates are a little off here :

- christian and muslim arabs had lived on the land for 2000 years

- for 200 years it had been part of the ottoman empire. The ottomans allowed the arabs to carry on as normal

- the british convinced the arabs to rise up against the ottomans, which they did

- the british tool control of the land

- the british randomly gave half the land away to jewish people

- the jewish people took most of the rest of the land, occupied most of what was left, and bombed the shti out of the tiny little bit they left for the arabs


In a nutshell that seems to be about it

I am late to the discussion but I will answer a point about Israel being retaliators, not instigators.

Israel attacks when it is itself attacked. Whether the response is disproprtionate is what is in question.

Invaders are generally considered aggressors rather than just retaliating, they have taken and continue to take Palestinian land, that is the corner stone of war, you can't wage war on someone and claim just to be retaliating.

Also, if there was never a state called Palestine, why does it have a right to exist if Israel does not?
....................................

There has never been a country called London either but if you kicked all the Londoners out to make a new country of people from some foreign land I think people might get a bit annoyed....
