I read the other day we pay the highest wages in world football. For me personally, this is farking worrying.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why? We are one of the 3 biggest clubs in the world, receive huge amounts of money and have some very good players.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You did not write this with a straight face? How exactly are we in the top 3?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which clubs are bigger than us other than Real and Barca?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bigger in terms of what? You are starting to sound like Liverpool supporters. In terms of what matters to me (on the field), we are not even top 5. If you want to discuss about all this marketing nonsense, then we are the champions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On pitch standing can change in a matter of seasons for good and bad. We are a massive club, easily one of the top 3 in the world and that's why we get player season like Pogba

Fair. It was a big fee at the time but not a record fee. Pogba as stated previously does not have to justify his price tag, we are the fools that paid for it. Ultimately, the question would be asked once his playing days are over and I am not sure the price would ever be justified. That's just me.

Absolute and utter rubbish. Top three in terms of income we bring in, yes. I've never been down the pub and hear people arguing about money their club brings.
Darren
Those 3 signings just show you how silly the money is in the game though. In terms of transfers in comparison to income Pogba was still less than the Veron and Ferdinand signings. You could also argue that Veron is a better footballer than Ferdinand but Ferdinand will go down as by far the better signing and value for money because of what he achieved at the club. If Pogba goes on to achieve half of what Rio did then I doubt many would be complaining about his fee. Too early to fully say whether we payed too much for Pogba.

Bayern Munich easily.
1982, yeah that's true. But the income to expenses thing is a bit of a tricky one because there is far more money in the game today. With Rio, and Veron, I don't think we were perceived to paid massively over the odds in the way we have with Pogba.
Darren
True, just saying in context and with time it's not that easy to say just yet anyway.
I mean £5m sounds ridiculous for a player when you actually think about it let alone £90m. Hasn't Ronaldo just signed a new 500k a week contract at Real for 5 years, half a million pounds every 7 days for 5 years until he's 36. If people think £90m for Pogba is crazy then Ronaldo's new contract is f-cking insane!
I'm not sure it is really. He is being paid that amount because for a good 8 years he has been the best in the business. Pogba is not the best in the business. There is no comparison here.
Yeah Ronaldo's contract is insane, but with his standing in world football you can kind of see how he can demand that. Will be interesting to see if Madrid come to regret that contract as he continues to decline.
I haven't really seen any Real other than the odd CL highlights this season. I read he's been pretty poor, will there come a point where he clearly isn't good enough but Real are too afraid to drop him? It's that or leave him on the bench earning silly money.
scholay
I understand what he's done in the past but he is now 31 and supposedly declining quite a bit. £130m in wages for a player in decline until the age of 36 is insane however good he has been.
I think that could well be the case. Hard to say with Ronaldo, though. He's such a dedicated professional that he could still be playing at a very high standard as that contract winds down. But if he's not would his ego allow him to accept his standing in the team should be under threat?
Well I don't know about being poor, I think the lad is a victim of his own success. Simply put it this way, if Zlatan scores 25 goals for us, we would deem that a success even if we paid a fee. If ronaldo scores 30 goals for Madrid, it will be considered a " bad " season for Ronny. That's the standards he has set himself.
Surely there's only so much you can do though, he is human and he will still deteriorate like everyone else. There may even be a case of frustration really coming in when Ronaldo's body can no longer do what he thinks it can. I know Ronaldo is a bit of a freak physically but those players that did play into their mid late 30s had to adapt their game, it'll be intriguing to see how and if Ronaldo does that too.

Pogba is not worth 90m on purely footballing terms. No chance, marketability, perhaps. I suspect no one else went as they realised that he wouldn't improve their team (real for example).

We didn't overpay on Pogba.. We paid the exact it took for Juventus to sell us the hottest young midfield talent in football.
We're a massive club. We paid massive money to get one of the best players off one of our European rivals.
We're better off for having him rather than the money sitting in the bank
----------------------
That's arguable. But the real question is are we better off having him rather than 2 or 3 others players?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Depends what those other (realistic) signings were
-------------------------------------
Robb, we paid 90m for Pogba and outbid even Real Madrid. His signing was perhaps one of the most unrealistic signings going, yet we made it happen. Then you hide behind this excuse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Realistic in the sense that anyone can name 3 players who would improve us in the way that we need and what Jose identified
He bought 3 players before Pogba and was never gonna buy 6 or 7 in one window when we had the squad we had (he wanted to see how some of them were before replacing almost a whole side in one summer.
Better to spend £89 million on one very good player than 89 million on 3 average players - something LvG did all too well
--------------------
Nice moving of the goalposts. Not like you Robb.

One of the biggest clubs in the world with one of the highest paid managers in the world, and they're making "physical signings"?
Man United have got the Portuguese Tony Pulis in charge, training based around flooding the box with the big men for the set pieces
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The best United teams were always physical. You don't win anything with eleven phannies in the side. Are you quite new to this football malarkey?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which United teams were they? Teams from 8, 10, 15 or 20 years ago?
Football has moved on in case you or your manager hadn't noticed. Football isn't about having as many big units in your team to help outmuscle opponents.

Not moving the goalposts. Like I've said all summer- what are these 3 players you propose? And when I say realistic I mean - you'll probably say Kante. He was never gonna be ours.
