We didn't overpay on Pogba.. We paid the exact it took for Juventus to sell us the hottest young midfield talent in football.
We're a massive club. We paid massive money to get one of the best players off one of our European rivals.
We're better off for having him rather than the money sitting in the bank
----------------------
That's arguable. But the real question is are we better off having him rather than 2 or 3 others players?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Depends what those other (realistic) signings were
-------------------------------------
Robb, we paid 90m for Pogba and outbid even Real Madrid. His signing was perhaps one of the most unrealistic signings going, yet we made it happen. Then you hide behind this excuse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Realistic in the sense that anyone can name 3 players who would improve us in the way that we need and what Jose identified
He bought 3 players before Pogba and was never gonna buy 6 or 7 in one window when we had the squad we had (he wanted to see how some of them were before replacing almost a whole side in one summer.
Better to spend £89 million on one very good player than 89 million on 3 average players - something LvG did all too well
--------------------
Nice moving of the goalposts. Not like you Robb.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not moving the goalposts. Like I've said all summer- what are these 3 players you propose? And when I say realistic I mean - you'll probably say Kante. He was never gonna be ours.
-----------------------
We've been over this loads of times. If you truly believe that there aren't 2 or 3 players in the world of football that we couldn't have got that would have improved us then you are a moron.
You on are walking contradiction mate. On one hand you are arguing with scholay that you are one of the 3 biggest teams in Europe, on the other hand you are arguing that there weren't any realistic targets that we could have signed that would have improved us. Just laughable.

You really don't get it. Jose was never going to come in and buy 6 new first teamers. Why would any manager do that? Especially when so many expensive players are still at the club.
But please, tell me these 3 players.
They're not realistic because you can't name them.
Jose identified 4 positions that needed immediate work. You seem to think you know better and think he should have gotten 6 but can't name those players.
You're hilarious
Could probably have got Julian weigl and marchisio for a lot lot less than pogba and would have had your midfield in better shape.
Surprised United didn't look at krychowiak at all in the summer either. Iturraspe would have been a great shield for the back four as well. Kovacic would have been a good wee playmaker.
There are plenty of combinations of great options out there that could and would be better. It's just they aren't that "star signing" so fans dismiss them.
And that's without going into exciting young prospects that could have also been added for the future like youri tielemans, ante coric, mo dahoud, Ruben neves etc.
There are so so many options out there but fans don't want to know unless it's any of about four or five players they perceive to be the only options
Pogba is an exciting young prospect and one who not only can help turn us into a superb side but also keeps him out of the reach of Real and Barca.
This all comes down to whether you rate Pogba or not.
In the summer Elvis made the ludicrous comparison of Pogba and Delle Alli so to him we just bought an over average player in Pogba.
To me and a lot of other people we bought one of the stars of the future. That for me is better than three players , all of whom, would have gone towards cluttering up an already midfield heavy squad.
Robb, you know I don't think Alli is a better player. I've explained this several times. Stop being a wum please.
Would Karius have improved us? Or Mane? Or Xhaka? This idea that there aren't quality players available for 30m is ludicrous. We signed 2 ourselves for around that price. Yet you make out like we had to pay 90m for Pogba because there weren't players available for less thay could improve us.
There are quite a few that joined PL teams that would have strengthened us. Even more if you cast your net further afield. I don't pretend to know all the best players in the leagues around the world. Or the promising youngsters. But a club with our money and supposed scouting system should.
It's about quality rather than quantity though.
We have a pretty big squad and in no way would it be sensible for a manager to come in and bring in 6 players like you're suggesting in one window
Pogba was the best available player in the number 8 position that Jose wanted and bought him.
And when I say best I mean in these categories.
- very good at the time of buying him
- massive potential to be one of the best in the world
- a Jose style player
- already knows the club
- stops rivals getting him
- massively marketable.
All of those things are important in their own ways to Jose and the club so I really don't see why buying 3 not so great players for the same price as one very good player means a better deal for us.
It might only be a better deal if our squad wasn't already chock full of not so great players.
Plenty of players bought for less than Pogba and having as much/more impact than him. Your quality not quantity quote is invalid.
As for not bringing in 6 players, isn't that what Pep has done? Jose brought in 5 in his first window at Chelsea I believe? If you bought 2 players instead of Pogba that only makes 5 in total. It's not far fetched at all and you know it. Just more excuses to try and justify the ludicrous fee we paid.
Then name them, it's a pretty simple thing to do if you think it's so easy and are using it to bash others.
Every year we want our club to buy the best players at the cheapest price but it really isn't that simple, I don't recall anyone suggesting their club should buy Kante in 2015? I get that we aren't scouts but buying these so called bargains really isn't that easy.
All summer the 3 names being mentioned that we should have bought were Kante (who had already decided on Chelsea even though Jose tried) and Verratti and Kroos, 2 brilliant players who neither club were willing to sell and if hypothetically they were then only for the silly figures we got Pogba for.
So if you want to suggest that we could have bought 2 players for the price of Pogba then at least name FFS.
We have Pogba. A player who will IMO become the best midfielder of his generation.
Those obsessed with his cost are weirdos who don't understand how easy it was for us to afford it and why our Adidas deal helps with these things.
The original debate was that apparently the Pogba deal makes us look desperate but it really doesn't. It shows how strong as a club we are that we can outbid Real Madrid for a player most big clubs would want.
If you can't get excited about that and would rather have three more obscure players instead of a guy who can genuinely excite us all then I can only imagine what a fun guy you must be at a party.

It's far too easy to be a critic when you don't have any answers.
We may well have over spent on Pogba but I'm pretty sure had there been another expensive target that was also available in the summer then we would have had the funds to get him. Woodward often said we have reserves for special players and I never felt that the money we did spend on Pogba had a direct hit on money we could spend on other targets., it definitely wasn't ever implied.
If Pogba had cost less than £89 million then Real Madrid might have gotten him.
And if that is the case I hope we continue to outbid other big clubs because its one of our strengths. Money we've made fair and square.
Like I said to Darren earlier, you can't ever really know if a transfer fee was correct until the player's time at the club is up, definitely not after a few months after the transfer occurred. Technically Veron was a better player than Rio while both joined for similar fees around the same time but what Rio contributed to the club over a decade doesn't compare to Veron so in that respect Rio was far better value, but only once his contribution to the club had been made.
Pogba is decent atm but thats it. He needs to dominate games and be more consistent but its early days. Our Juve lover here along with Robb jizzed themselves over Pogba. It remains to be seen if he stays years and becomes one of the best players in the world.
Btw Delle Alli is class and we should have been on to him having seen him and his side embarrass us in that game !!! He will go on to be a superstar for club and country imo

Makes me sad reading this thread. In other words, what i am reading here is that the days of finding a vida, ole, Hernandez are long gone. Let's get rid of our scouting system, jesus.
they could be gone even though Jose has overseen numerous new scouts from Holland roporvtugal to South America so maybe you never know we unearth a gem. The Dutch had Chong and Gomes in the youth ranks look special
If Pogba had cost less than £89 million then Real Madrid might have gotten him.
And if that is the case I hope we continue to outbid other big clubs because its one of our strengths. Money we've made fair and square.
---
If Madrid really wanted him he'd be there. They however knew that he's not a 90m player, and wouldn't pay stupid money (for once)
Fact is that any big side would love Pogba. We have him, they don't
Who cares what we paid. For once we got our main target and we're better off for having him than have that money sitting in the bank
"United are currently sixth in the Premier League table but find themselves eight points off leaders Liverpool."
About the only truthful thing in the article.

Robb, I have already provided 3 names that you have chosen to ignore. Just as you have ignored the names provided by others posters during the summer and on this thread.
I have a young family and as result watch a lot less football than I used to. I am very out of touch with football in other countries these days and won't pretend otherwise, unlike many on these boards do. But I am not stupid enough to believe that quality players have ceased to exist in other countries just because I have stopped watching football from other countries. That would be moronic. So if you want to go on pretending that it is impossible to sign players around the 30m mark or less that can improve us, by all means continue to do so (despite the fact we sined Bailly and Micky). But we all know that you are only doing so to justify the fact that we massively overpaid for a very good but overhyped player.
Did somebody just call Pogba decent but Alli class?

Alli is a good player mate. I think Pogba is the better player, but Alli is younger and could surpass him. But my point about him in the summer was that he was bought for 5m I think? But there isn't too much between him and Pogba in terms of ability. Something that I have explained to Robb a few times, but he does like to ignore stuff that doesn't suit him.

Elvis is hiding behind the 'I'm not a scout so why would i know' excuse.
It's far too easy to be a critic when you don't have any answers.

-------------------------
Robb, Liverpool signed Matip on a free I believe? (Sorry, I said Karius earlier when I meant Matip). I am sure that you would have called him an obscure player. Just as you would Bailly. But both have proven to be very good signings that have improved the team.
