All that and Republicans plus a few on here say it was a nothing burger. People died. Some were maimed.
Let's see what happens when the house gets a hold of the WH logs and phones of Trump and his advisors. It was a fekin attempted coup.

I just don’t rate Boris and his crew mate. I don’t think the Conservatives are Conservatives anymore. Probably similar or how some labour voters don’t feel that labour are labour anymore. I think both parties have changed so much over the last 25 odd years.

The difference between Labour and the Conservatives is the Conservatives are a cult.
All the chat about Corbynista blah blah from the right wingers hid the fact that they are worse, Corbyn for all his faults is a democrat, the Conservative voters have swung so far right that they will defend any illiberal action in the name of their demogogic leader against their best interests.
At least with Labour there is self criticism and healthy division/competition, it's far from perfect but it's better than blindly following the pied piper water balloon.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think you’re misreading things mate. I don’t think people have swung so far right at all. I just think more traditional labour voters are feeling disillusioned with labour and the amount of money the Conservatives spend in elections ultimately pays dividends…
I can’t think of hardly anyone that I agree or disagree with that I truly look at and think ‘yeah ok they’re top level / very impressive individuals’.
Blair was good at chat and playing the part but he was only good because of the people around him. Cameron was ok / meh and it’s just downhill from there all over the place blue or red.
Maybe I should just run and sort it all out?
Naaah, Tories have perfected the art of deception and populism and taken it to a new level. They'll be in charge until people cotton on.

I think the whole pool of talent needs to change. Start paying MPs like £200k (not right now but when we’re stable again), performance based pay and PM like £1m a year or something and start attracting top talent into politics.
Why on earth would a top tier graduate that could work at the top of any industry choose to go into politics (I know to make a difference etc)? We have so many barristers I think right now who are struggling when they are called to the bar but they stick with it to make a success of themselves within their chosen field and make very good money doing so. I didn’t read it seriously but answered it seriously.
I’d vote hardcore proper Conservatives right now if I could but they don’t really exist anymore. I want them grey faced, grey hair, huge glasses and some proper boffins in there. I don’t want charisma and charm, I want to look at the person and think ‘yeah they know their sheeet’.

We have so many barristers I think right now who are struggling when they are called to the bar but they stick with it to make a success of themselves within their chosen field and make very good money doing so. I won't support paying MPs more unless there are massive changes to the selection process, it is simply not the case that deciding to pay people more will mean the parties start putting up more capable candidates.
Maybe have some actual criteria for some of the most important positions in the country and some severely restrictive rules for active they have left/lost the seat.
🚨 | NEW: Tory MP Owen Paterson has stated he would ‘not hesitate’ to take £100,000 from two companies and lobby on behalf of them again
I'm all for paying MPs performance related pay. Most of them would be on minimum wage. Then we'd quickly learn whether £9.50 per hour is enough.

Yeah I’m up for that if it can be implemented. I get your point about the parties and that’s another huge hurdle to overcome.
Whatever it takes to get top talent involved. We’ve still got plenty of seriously impressive people in this country but very very few of them even think about getting into politics.

The obvious problem with this is a. It won’t ever be brought in and b. Someone has to set the targets etc so it will probably never happen.
But paying more could happen.

Chris Bryant said as much during his captivating speech this afternoon.
Paterson told the committee he wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Including using his constituency office, (which he did on 16 separate occasions) again for hosting meetings with Randox and Lynn's Foods, a breach of MP's conduct

I actually think MPs would be better quality if paid more, the salary is too low to attract the skillset required and to ensure time commitments.

At first maybe but over time more talent would get into it. Ask any barrister you know if they’d recommend getting into it these days or not. I’d bet that most wouldn’t recommend it as much as in previous years. So you take a certain percentage of those types of candidates and present them with a career in politics that can pay well even outside of the top top positions then some would go for it, then the standards would raise and so on.
The fact that the PM is paid £160k is a bit of a joke, it’s a ridiculously big job, very few CEO positions are bigger or more complex yet they’re paid a fortune.
You get what you pay for comes to mind.

The selection processes would still be the same. The parties would still select the same types of people. Until that changes and the system changes, we will still end up with the same types of people becoming MPs.

I think the opposition needs to up their game too though.
We have so many people working in the city that are very talented people too purely because of the money. Politics is missing the money apart from the post-politics money which only really happens to the top top dogs anyway.

Yeah I’m up for that if it can be implemented. I get your point about the parties and that’s another huge hurdle to overcome.
Whatever it takes to get top talent involved. We’ve still got plenty of seriously impressive people in this country but very very few of them even think about getting into politics.

I'm all for paying MPs performance related pay. Most of them would be on minimum wage. Then we'd quickly learn whether £9.50 per hour is enough.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lol
The obvious problem with this is a. It won’t ever be brought in and b. Someone has to set the targets etc so it will probably never happen.
But paying more could happen.
“Earn £200k instead of £60k? Yar I’ll vote for that sure”
“Hi yes your services are no longer required as we have someone competent now”
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It wouldn't work like that though. We'd just end up paying the same incompetent fools more.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
At first maybe but over time more talent would get into it.
