They set up a private sponsorship thing here for Syrian refugees. Haven't heard any horror stories. I'm sure the sponsors are vetted too.

As to the question that prompted your response, I really don't know how I feel about the gender recognition amendments. I find myself agreeing with both points of view if I'm honest.

It really depends on your angle really. Theres a lot written about ontology and metaphysics. So you have a lot of kinds definitions which can exist.

If we are going by a theory of forms, then it might be some common essence shared by women. Like biological s3x characteristics or gender identity.

Or if we go by by existentialism - then you would hold a view that one is not born a woman, but becomes one. It's up to us to define our existence.

Or you can view it an analytic and logical sense; like with Wittgenstein's family of resemblance. Where there is not really a singular essence, but some similarities which overlap - and the meaning of each comes in relation to particular context and use.

We can apply the same problems to other definitions - like how can one define soup? It can be hot, cold, sweet and savoury. I guess we can say its liquid food - but so is porridge or smoothies - are these kinds of soup?

The point being, philosophically there is not been a lot we can say which is 'established', as meaning. And personally I would defining gender or s3x, is a philosophical issue.

It's a lot worse than the first time I had it.. I can only imagine that's because the first time I had it, one other person at work was off sick with it, presumably having spread it before symptoms and we were all masked up, (but unvaccinated) this time we've got 3 off sick with it a d four people *At work* with it, and only one of them has the sense to continue mask wearing even though it's RM policy.

My brother in law still has a shocking lung emptying cough, and he caught it two weeks ago on Saturday. Triple vaxxed.

I thought Lisa Nandy was excellent opposite him. Spoke on practicalities and highlighted the shameless attempts by the Conservative government to claim credit for their “DIY asylum” scheme which has not been properly funded, which has not had proper engagement from councils or charities. They dithered and dallied for weeks while Europe got on with it, and with all that dithering and dallying they still have a poorly thought out system.

Certainly problems on the asylum front from H.O and govt, in contrast to British public wanting to bring refugees in to their own homes.

Boris is quite popular in Ukraine and receives plaudits for supplying weapons to their armed forces, so UK did better on that front.

I noticed while reading about Abbott and Corbyn on nato and western expansion causing the friction with Putin, their line and that of the far left as Rosso, crouchy and black hawk agreed, that Sturgeon was under pressure for sharing power with anti-Nato Green party in Scotland.

What is your take on the Green party NATO stance in Scotland and among the Corbynista faction?

I also note Ireland remains neutral in this, according to Irish PM on BBC Sunday morning, and will not answer Zelensky and Ukraine calls for arms to take on Putin.

Is it time for Ireland to ditch neutrality in face of the Putin threat?

Some very interesting angles, I think for most people it is the theory of forms as you put it.

Biological versus identity is the crux of the matter.

For me a definition would be human adult female. And I think it’s really as simple as that when it comes to applying these things across society.

Following the science, biologically there are males and females, men and women, but some people are born into the wrong bodies.

Your posts got me thinking about trans people in prison or women's refuges, where they could be vulnerable to a man self identifying as a woman moving in beside them.

Take the killer of Sarah Everard, and if that male cop self identifies in future as female, should he be allowed in a women's prison wing?

This has happened already, of course and is a can of worms.
