Don't get the uproar over Abbott to be honest.

She said something offensive in a long list of other offensive and borderline racist statements she's made over the years.

Her statements don't bother me particularly but would many other MP's get as many chances as she had?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The point is that the disciplinary committee ran their investigation and drew up their conclusions; the NEC accordingly meted out a punishment which Diane Abbott appeared to accept and her suspension was lifted; and now the NEC has unilaterally decided to block her candidacy, against the wishes of Hackney North CLP and against the wishes of Labour voters in Hackney North.

Diane has incredible support across the party, has been a member for half a century and MP for nigh on 40 years, has been key to many great victories - electoral and legislatory - the party has achieved over that period, and now she is being undemocratically and unceremoniously dumped out of the PLP as a result of factionism.

I’m quite surprised that nobody has really challenged Starmer and Reeves about why they’ve lied over the last few weeks about the disciplinary committee’s investigation being concluded.

Although I think Abbott’s time has come, she’s 70, I think that she has been a pretty good MP all things considered and I 100% believe that people such as Sat Nav above would be less antagonised by her were she not black.

I mean there’s not exactly a fair appraisal of her life’s work going on here is there. I also don’t think she’s a lying, stealing wrong un, and actually does her job for the right reasons.

Care to elaborate or grow some balls and say what you really mean?

I think you’re a right wing apologist and a racist.

There you go. Congratulations

Plus we’ve had so many controversial and sleazy MP’s mainly from the tories, labour must be thinking is the drama Abbott brings really worth it

Fresh starts with limited controversial MP’s
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This isn't an easy one because although most of the country won't regard this as much of a loss but she is hugely popular in her constituency and they will be furious.

I've said for years that the Labour left are the most cowardly group of people in politics. The way they've allowed Starmer to purge them with barely a murmur in response has been pathetic.

Now they have another good opportunity to rise up and fight let's see if they have the minerals. Or are they gonna continue to sit on their hands and let plastic Tory Starmer further marginalise them?

It’s nothing I’ve not said before. You’re vile imo.

Although I have read someone on Twitter say she was going to keep quiet and announce she was retiring allowing for Labour MPs, including Starmer, to congratulate her on her career, but some idiot leaked it to the Times that she was banned so she's now basically been forced to come out and clarify that it's true.

Why you'd leak that when she was about to leave cleanly I have no idea.

Her constituents like her, that's why she is has had a long career.

She could still get a seat in the Lords

She should get a seat, at least she would have earned it rather than bought it

I don’t think I’m buying that line.

It doesn’t really sit with the comments she’s made since the leak.

We could be talking about any MP really. The issue isn’t this specific case; it’s that the NEC is an undemocratic body which wields exceptional power and is wont to make political decisions in conflict with the wishes of CLPs and the wider party membership.

She's spent the past 5 years trashing Starmer in tweets that just weirder and weirder with pictures more pixelated than something from the noughties

The investigation has not been handled fairly or in line with others but the PLP has every right to dictate who is a candidate when we're this close to a GE, it's something Corbyn did to disastrous effect in both his elections

Her time has come, I mean she’s 70, but she’s had a fine career that’s been smeared one way or another pretty much since day one, through a hurly disproportionate amount of press.

Or she just had so much press because she constantly said dumb things and made gaffes

She’s a moron, and her sons a $kumbag, good riddance

She’s a moron? She went to Cambridge ffs

This is exactly what I’m talking about! Chris Grayling is estimated to have cost this country £2bn through little more than incompetence. Gove is a massive coke head. Rishi a tax dodger and I could go on, and on, and on. Where’s the long posts about them?

Yet they get less press because there’s stories about a shoe and a mojito??? Yer right.

Thanks for proving my point though.

The point is that the NEC (it wasn’t a PLP decision iirc, but the same should apply to them) absolutely *shouldn’t* be making such decisions if Labour is to consider itself a democratic, devolved or membership-run party, regardless of who the party leader is.

The investigation was closed and the sanctions agreed last year (a fact that both Starmer and Reeves have brazenly lied about in recent weeks).

Starmer has gone out of his way, repeatedly, as Reeves did with Kay Burley last week, to emphasise that there was an independent disciplinary investigation and process and that the party leadership absolutely couldn’t interfere with that and that that process was ongoing and had to run its course.

The independent process was completed - reported and was closed - in December.

They could have wrapped all of this up in December, or at any point since then, so “there’s a GE coming up” doesn’t cut it as an excuse.

The disciplinary committee did not recommend that Abbott should no longer represent the party or that the NEC should bar her from standing in the future afaik. The NEC has decided that unilaterally.

I hope Diane Abbott elects to stand as an independent and wipes the floor with the Labour candidate in Hackney North.

It seems various Governments are loath to build new prisons as it’s an admission that crime had increased

Governments have historically always been loathe to build more prisons for that reason. It's not a new phenomenon.

If she stands, along with Corbyn, she will find out how people really feel

posted on 29/5/24

I'm not sure she will though, she hasn't got the ego of Corbyn and probably wants to remain in the party

Do we not want to improve the standard of politics in the UK? If we’re already finger pointing to the conservatives, then we’re already enabling the same type of cynical politicking seen in the past 10+ years.
