Starmer has gone out of his way, repeatedly, as Reeves did with Kay Burley last week, to emphasise that there was an independent disciplinary investigation and process and that the party leadership absolutely couldn’t interfere with that and that that process was ongoing and had to run its course.

The independent process was completed - reported and was closed - in December.

They could have wrapped all of this up in December, or at any point since then, so “there’s a GE coming up” doesn’t cut it as an excuse.

The disciplinary committee did not recommend that Abbott should no longer represent the party or that the NEC should bar her from standing in the future afaik. The NEC has decided that unilaterally.

I hope Diane Abbott elects to stand as an independent and wipes the floor with the Labour candidate in Hackney North.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If she stands, along with Corbyn, she will find out how people really feel
----------------------------------------------------------------------
True I suspect she won’t stand though.

I also reckon Corbyn is going to absolutely walk Islington North, regardless of the resources thrown at it by Labour.

Personally, I don’t feel any overwhelming sympathy for Abbott (on this matter, at least). She’s had a long and distinguished career, and will retire well-respected (within the party and by Labour voters, at least) and comfortable.

My sympathies continue to lie with the Labour Party membership and the CLPs, who continue to be shafted by the NEC and PLP, left, right and centre.

Oh, you have an arbitrary point in history to compare with? I didn't know that. Did you mean that crime has increased since Tories came in?

Tbh, I have no idea but I'm sure the stats and figures are available somewhere. When it comes to these things I like to stick to cold hard facts, which sometimes I discover do not agree with what I think.

Meaning many graduates will be paying off their debts in their 60s.. You've invested only a third of what was recommended by the catch up tsar to help kids catch up after the pandemic.. Our resident statistician can probably offer more detail but the way crime is measured has changed over the last 14 years so it hard to compare

https://fullfact.org/news/crime-figures-fall-half-conservatives/

This article does a decent job of explaining but overall crime has fallen since 2017... I'm not sure how much that's influenced by our awful backlog in the criminal justice system

I wouldn’t go that far

Do I trust Starmer though? No, not really.

If he isn’t wilfully duplicitous, then I don’t think he’s demonstrated any clear vision for the future of the country (at any level, in any form), for critically-needed socioeconomic intervention; for critically-needed investment in infrastructure; for the required paradigm shifts in industrial strategy, in the affordability of housing and education, and in climate change policy.

And where he has made his rather underwhelming pledges, his determination to meet those hasn’t proven to be particularly steadfast.

Reeves and Streeting I wouldn’t be as diplomatic about Of the two of them, the only unwaveringly resolute commitment I’ve seen has been Streeting’s absolute determination to involve the private sector in NHS business as widely as possible.

Personally don't know either way but the Police and local Council my employer) did a pretty wide ranging but unofficial survey in Edinburgh and especially the peripheral housing estates where the majority of the population live and one of the overriding issues was thatt people had stopped reporting issues that they might have 10-15yrs previously, was a mix it seemed of lack of faith in the Police and also that even if they did report it there was nothing that could be done anyway.

I work in a tough peripheral estate right amongst all the issues and live close by and from a personal perspective I have seen an increase in both violent offences and especially petty theft and shoplifting in and around the area but as said I don't have any wider official figures

Would be very interested to see some though.

While giving hundreds of millions to the likes of Ratcliffe to help him establish his own plastic producing company.

Constantly getting bent over. It's like they're ruining the country on purpose and blaming it on sheet like immigration and welfare, and using the culture war to keep people distracted.

This is why going to University is pointless if you're gonna be paying the debt until you're in your 60s. They're therefore destroying higher education as well.

You could find them instead of assuming crime has increased simply because you notice more crimes than you did in the past. That's a bit irresponsible, no?

Official government figures, United Nations and affiliate figures and the likes. Also, any source can be reliable or unreliable, so it also depends sometimes.

Bit tricky to do because the way crimes are recorded and reported has changed a few times since then.

From what I can gather, crime was much worse in the 80s than it is now, but don't quote me on that.

Based on the assumption that most of us here are between 25-40 odd say. Yes, crime has declined since then.

You think otherwise because good news isn’t popular to report and with the huge increase in media each globally, news reaches many more people quicker and easier than ever before.

Unbelievable. They have been crucifying her for 40 years

Do we not want to improve the standard of politics in the UK? If we’re already finger pointing to the conservatives, then we’re already enabling the same type of cynical politicking seen in the past 10+ years.

She shouldnt be able to stand for Labour if they dont want her to
