it is one of the poorer marvel films but the bar is set pretty high with them.

Don’t agree with that. The bar isn’t that high at all. It’s somewhere in the middle. They just tend to be overated by many. Some ofcourse are very good, but on average they are passably entertaining but flawed. But I speak as a movie fan not really a comic book fan.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
nonsense

every Avenger
Spidermans
Iron Man 1&2
Dr Strange
Thor Ragnorak
Ant Man
Captain Americas
Guardians of the Galaxy
took the superhero genre to a complete new level.

they 100% changed the game and set the bar.

they took that bar, snapped it and replaced it with a bar far far higher than it ever every Avenger-> avengers aren’t very good, aside infinity war which is good. The final one was so obvious it ruined infinity war.
Spidermans-> mostly average at best, latest was fairly good
Iron Man 1&2-> decent
Dr Strange~> ok, inventive visuals
Thor Ragnorak-> did enjoy this
Ant Man-> not very good
Captain Americas—> first one good, rest not very
Guardians of the Galaxy-> now this is good.
took the superhero genre to a complete new level.

That’s my take

I think we need to clarify where the bar sits. Are we talking a high bar for comic book movies or for all movies regardless of genre?

If it's the latter, no MCU movie even gets anything above a 7 for me.

MCU movies are like Oreos, most people like them but they are few peoples favourite food

i believe it is your take however your take is very much in the minority it seems.

Spidermans were good without being amazing without doubt better than jsut average.
Iron Man 1 & 2 were very good. the first one kicked started off what we got. (3 wasnt that great IMO)
Dr Strange the first one was original and excellent
Thor Ragnorak was outstanding a real 9/10 for me
Ant Man was good, better than average, aimed at a slightly younger crowd but got it spot on IMO.
Captain America - first one was very good, Winter Soldier was fantastic, Civil War was fantastic
Guardians of the Galaxy was fantastic.

IMO there is at least 10 either very very good films or fantastic films in that list

Im talking about super hero films. No point being too vague about genre's as the vary too much.

I mark films based on the film its aiming to be and not so much a generic ruling.

the same way you wouldnt grade a Predator/Commando etc the same way you would grade Schindlers list.

both can be a 9/10 for completely different reasons and holding them to completely different standards.

posted on 11/11/22

There are two types of grades. One grade for the movie within the genre and one overall grade as a film.

Predator as an action movie is a 9/10
Predator as a movie is probably a 7/10

posted on 11/11/22

The only MCU movies I rate 8/10 or above is:
Civil War
Iron Man 1
Winter Soldier
Avengers 1
Infinity War
Endgame
Spiderman NWH
Shang Chi
Guardians 1

posted on 11/11/22

Infinity War
Endgame
Ragnarok
Dr. Strange for unique cinematography

Those are the only 8/10 or above for me

Yeah they can't all be winners.

These are the ones I would give above a 9

Tbh I just see movies as movies, and think it's a disservice to genre film making to box it in a category.

I have no issue saying Aliens is as good as Schindlers List simply because one is a Sci film action movie and the other is a drama centred on the holocaust

I agree with this, but should they not be just judged the same as any other movie? We don’t give say something like aliens it’s own rating scale. That’s how I was rating them, in the same scale as other films, which may have caused confusion

8/10 is a very high score in my book.

no film is perfect therefore no film gets 10/10 , therfore 9/10 is as good as it gets pretty much. So an 8/10 is a very very good score IMO. You didnt have Dr Strange up there with them?? and no Thor Ragnorak?!?!?

However you still have 9 of their films as being at least excellent. thats almost half of the films in their list as being 8/10 is hella impressive IMO.

Did love dr strange’s visuals, buildings folding etc was pretty cool. Though we had seen sort of similar in inception.

Infinity war and guardians are probably the only ones I’d have up there. Original iron man close. I quite like the original captain america, the back story was far more intersting than anything in winter soldier.

would you review or rate Predator the same way you would rate Gone with the Wind?

If we are talking top ten all time comic book movies, in no particular order:
The Dark Knight
Logan
Deadpool 1
V for Vendetta
Spiderman 2
Batman Begins
X men 2
Superman 1
Civil War
X men days of future past

The problem with rating movies as just movies is the criteria.

E.G. Blair Witch Project vs Jurassic Park 1

I'd rate Jurassic 1 higher simply because I enjoyed the visuals, the story and the music. BWP doesn't try to hit those same elements, it focuses instead on tension, pacing, story, horror aspects and suspense.

Do t think it matters, you rate it on it’s merits not it’s subject imo. Naturally some will feel more drawn to some types of movies than others.

I think sub consciously people rate movies in relation to other similar movies. So when watching a Bond movie, people are rating it based on other Bond movies and other spy movies, like Mission Impossible or Bourne.

Of course it matters. you shouldnt score different genres and types of films the same way.

they gain merits through completely different methods and therefore should be judged differently.

Its not about being drawn to a certain genre its about how it hits its marks within its genre.
