Started watching Prey but it was getting too ridiculous.

A humanoid alien with advanced technology in that time? Nonsense!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh come on Pun, You have to see how it all plays out. For sure when you heard the premise your mind goes straight to, how is that gonna work.
But somehow, it works.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was clearly joking you Morb
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Uh huh, When you say clearly, for the rest of us, it’s like driving through thick fog.
Anyway, finish watching it. You won’t regret it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Honestly I stopped watching last night cause I had a kebab, burger and onion rings / chips galore and passed out in a food coma lol

some aliens not once referenced in any other movie, suddenly thousands of them storming the avengers
---
Why did they need to be referenced in another movie?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess they didn’t, but it just felt like really cheap cannon fodder with absolutely no back story, fx filler if you will, and to save money it was exactly the same fx model x10,000. No individuality. Just felt really cheap (though I know it most definitely wasn’t in real (money) terms- probably why it was the same model)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How else can you portray large scale battles? The aliens are used to give the Avengers something to showcase their abilities. We don't need the backstory of each alien.

It's not just the MCU that does it either. LOTR, Harry Potter,Star Wars, 300, Avatar, planet of the apes,Gladiator.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Those films did manage some individuality of the enemies. in LOTR the they’a lot of the orcs looked distinct, and I’m not surprised as in every way it was vastly superior. Gladiator by virtue of enemies as human enemies, the rest was distance shots so you can’t tell. Star wars got away with it as storm troopers had suits, much of the blue army in avatar looked different and the soldiers largely were in mechs . I understand why it was done that way, they wanted an epic battle in what was a mage expensive movie as is, so you cut a few corners, and hope people don’t notice. The other thing is the movies you listed are generally far better than infinity wars, avatar on a par I reckon.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Disagree.

Most of the orcs in LOTR look the same. Watch the helms deep fight, apart from a few of the leaders, the rest of them look identical. Same with Return of the king and the battle of Gondor. All the riders of Rohan looked identical, no back story, no individualism, just lines and lines of people wearing armour on horses. Still remains an iconic scene though.

If we mean Helm's Deep - I have issues with it...

Legolas skateboarding down a staircase with a shield was an early seed to Jackson's terrible excesses in the Hobbit for example.

However, in that movie, we are with Rohan as they desperately retreat from an encroaching evil to an old castle in a hopeless cause, taking on a relentless enemy in the dead of night.

And the Uruk-hai are super soldiers brought forward by established enemy Saruman - so it feels part of the struggle involving characters we know.

That's a lot more compelling than a CGI generically created army that fights in Wakanda imo.

Plus obviously it having physically to it, and a sense of heft. Which The Batman managed and respectfully, the MCU rarely if ever does.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Batman lacked any physicality or heft to me. He was slow and ponderous and I barely felt any excitement watching those scenes. Although that was the point of the movie, to show an unhinged and enraged Wayne, who hasn't learned to control his body and skills.

Shang Chi fight scenes are on a different level to The Batmans. As was Winter Solider.

We can only say we have different perceptions of action then.

The sequence where Batman throws the bar at the man's face was just brilliantly choreographed, edited and directed imo.

The same goes for the opening fight when he emerges from the dark and then from a wide angle we see him take these heavy blows and he still powers through them.

I haven't seen Shang-Chi. So can't comment.

Winter Soldier was very variable - much too much cutting for my liking.

Agreed, Helms Deep and Battle of Gondor were a lot more compelling but my point is that CGI armies alone don't need to have individualism. They are there too compliment the scene and story and show the scale. The MCU don't do it as well as LOTR but I think their intention is still the same.

They had (roughly) the same budget limitations, but they tended to do the full scale wide shots as similar, but would intersperse them with orc kills mid/close ups that showed somewhat individuality. The two towers is the weakest of the 3, but it was still good. The avengers battle had what 5 of thanos’s buddies and then 10000 aliens that were identical? Massive reason it felt plastic.

For instance - this is the highway fight scene in Captain America Winter Soldier...

the movie has many virtues and I like it a lot.

BUT

There is just way too much cutting here, it gives me a headache to the point I often skip it on rewatches.

There must be 150 cuts in two minutes, I can barely tell what's going on it hurts my head.

By contrast there's about 8 cuts in two minutes and despite the music and dark room I can follow it easily.

Fair enough but for me as a fan, it was great to see all these heroes showcasing their abilities on such a large scale. I love the grittier Nolan Batman films but I also enjoy seeing the more fantasy based characters like Iron Man and Thor, display their abilities.

I recently realised how overly-reliant MCU is on CGI.

Like, even the MIT party in No Way Home that Flash Thompson is at is blue screened, as is the bar Natasha and Jelena drink at in Black Widow...it's a crutch for them at this point.

Don’t get me wrong guv, I enjoyed it, was probably the best marvel film I’ve seen with GoG. And I know why it was done the way it was, just thought it could have been better in that scene.

Anyway Marvel's malaise and DC's continued fackupery has made me pessimistic about future superhero movies tbh.

I think some of the recent overeliance on CGI is due to the pandemic and restrictions. I suspect they used the stagecraft technology from Star Wars and let the MCU borrow it.

My main issue with the CGI is the quality. We are in 2022 and it still doesn't look great in certain movies. Thor 4,Dr Strange 2 and even NWH had moments where the CGI looked like it was from the early 2000s. Maybe they have a limited budget on the visuals in phase 4 but I expect better, especially when the story and script are lacking.

Too many movies has probably led to a time crunch, and made it hard for effects houses to perfect the movies.

I take the point on the pandemic.
