Does the Premier League deserve 6 CL places

It's a fair argument but what happens when wolves spend enough money to make it a competitive top 7, or if Newcastle's takeover goes through and they make it a competitive top 8. Do we enter 8 teams into the CL?

And the possibility of the 6th best team in one league being given the moniker Champions of Europe doesn't sound a bit stupid to you?

Chelsea won the CL and finished 6th in the PL.

You know Liverpool won the CL after being the 4th best team in England last year right?

That's the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this argument. Why not just make the Club World Championship all European teams? 9 times out of 10 Europe wins it anyway, what's the value in including the North American, South American, Asian teams at all?

There has to be a definitive line somewhere even if there's weight to the counter argument.

As I said earlier, a European competition has to be two things - representative and competitive. It is a hard thing to balance.

And we're widely regarded as one of the weakest Champions League winners of all time. You just proved my point for me.

Who gives a fack if you are regarded as one of the weakest CL winners of all time? You were Champions of Europe, end of. Opinion on quality matters not.

When we finally leave Europe...if we ever do... UEFA might decide they can do without us in the CL...

Chelsea won the Champions League on merit. They didn't cheat. They beat some of the best teams in Europe fair and square. They did that while being the 6th best team in their country.

What about if you added 5th and 6th into the qualifying rounds or something. Other teams would still have their chance, but so would 5th and 6th.

It's still a ropey argument cos by adding those two teams, two others who performed better in their respective leagues would miss out.

I do see your primary point (or Jose's point) about the strength of the PL right now, but it's a very slippery slope.

Yes it does. You said the moniker of "Champions of Europe" would sound silly if 6th in PL won it, yet it didn't. Chelsea were Champions of Europe.

So looking through the responses quickly. The whole site disagrees with wahl.

In other news. Water is wet

It is a slippery slope which is why we need a better system for determining who deserves to be in the Champions League.

Macaroni dude's system seems to be pretty good actually in that it doesn't extra teams into European competition, but it distributes them more fairly.

Makes it more interesting for who?

Any other nation whose club loses out (and many do already) then it becomes more and more less of a “European” competition. The gap between the better off clubs and the others gets wider and wider and before you know it you’ve a case for making it 8 clubs out of the EPL and the rest from Spain, Italy and Germany. Just discard everyone else.

Some European competition that.

So in essence it’s a stupid idea.

The Scottish League has no place in the Champions League, so I can understand your reaction.

There’s really no need to prove you’re an idiot by spouting nonsense when it’s safer to just have people maybe think it.

You clearly don’t understand the simplistic notion that it’s a European competition thereby ridiculing your own argument.

Well done and I didn’t even have to try

Do you not think that Arsenal and Man Utd are good enough to play in the Champions League?
