have to give this new regime a chance before we start throwing our toys out the pram

hopefully a signing like vicario working out will give people more confidence the next time we go after someone more under the radar
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not about throwing the toys out of the pram. It's more about the fact that we've clearly swerved our first choices based on finances alone. If Vicario was our first choice and we just went straight for him, fair play but we didn't. We preferred Raya but didn't want to pay. We really like Maddison but we don't want to pay. My point is that although this appears to be a new regime with data leading the way, it's clearly still Levy giving the thumbs up or down on the finances, which for a man of his limited football sense, is scandalous. So much for taking a backward step. How the hell does he know whether someone is worth it or not? Other teams have football men in charge of recruitment. Arteta is the manager, he consults Edu and the Kroenke family are just the money men. This is where things are going wrong for us. We have Caesar at the head and he's hell bent on keeping his grip on the throne.

Historically out best signings cost under £30m.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Raya and Maddison still with their clubs next season, then leaving on a free next summer.

Those who know Leonardo Gabbanini say he has a great eye for talent across the globe.

The Italian is also a very modern style of scout in that he uses data heavily to back up what he sees after he has watched a player.

@AlasdairGold

Feels like Gold is hinting this guy could be our new DoF?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My worry about that is that Gabbanini is a Paratici appointment, whose instincts were very defensive. Does this then mean we have a recruitment guy who's philosophy diametrically opposes the managers?

I'd just much rather us sign sure bets these days. Maddison, Raya and Barnes all represent that. We'd know exactly what we're getting.

I really hope this is just a way of negotiating Leicester down because if he ends up at Newcastle because we didn't want to put the money up then that's all on Levy. Remember, we're not in Europe. We haven't got a sniff of getting anyone else remotely as good as Maddison through the door. Not a chance. It's a miracle he's rumoured to not find CL football essential.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd sooner we get the right player than the popular one. Djed Spence for example. Richarlison as PL proven when Kulu came in and smashed it..

I think we all want Maddison but there's definitely players out there that would be as good or better for similar money. You just have to be smart to spot them. It's what Brighton do every transfer window.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's true that they could work out. At the moment not going for Raya and Maddison, players that we have shown a clear interest in, and ending up with cheaper alternatives feels like it has Levy's paw prints all over it. But it could be the manager is just as interested in these others.

Disappointing on a personal level though as I like Maddison and think he would be a good addition. Would have been excited to see him link up with Kane in the team under an attack-minded coach.

That might not be a bad thing when Ange is all out attack. Sometimes you need opposites to create that ying and yang energy.

I think you could put a video like that for every gk tbh
----------------------------------------------------------------------
someone did an identical vid with Raya lol

my issues with this is not sure this guy will have the same ability on the ball or sweeping as Raya

how do you know that when arsenal decide say not to pay 100m for mudryk that's edu and arteta's decision rather than kroenke, but when we don't pay 60m for maddison that is clearly Levi meddling?

It's just blatant confirmation bias. Whenever we spend big on a player it has nothing to do with levy but whenever we decide not to it's all Levy's fault

I'm still holding a candle for Min Jae. His clause become ls active at the start of July. Do your thing Son.

posted on 22/6/23

We all agree that If Leicester wanted 200m for Maddison we should of course refuse to pay that, so we accept that sometimes not making a signing for financial reasons is entirely justifiable and sensible.

We have a budget and we have loads of holes in our squad. we have to determine how valuable our targets are relative to that budget. If we think Vicario is 90% the player Raya is at less than half the cost than we have every right to get him in swiftly and give ourselves more money to spend elsewhere.

That isn't true. It's Levy's fault in both instances, when the player we spend big on doesn't work out anyway.

Where this argument fails is that Maddison, under any contract length, isn't worth 200m. He is, unquestionably, worth at least 60m. It might be a little steep considering his contract situation, maybe 40-45m is fairer, but Maddison on a five year deal, with the numbers he puts up is an 80-90m player with the added 20% HG tax. Even at 60m it's still good value. That's my point. It might be steep given his contract but ultimately still of extreme value.

It's hard to believe we spent a combine 90m on Richy and Emerson and baulk at the cost of a top drawer seasoned Prem creative midfielder for 60m. Staggering lack of perspective.

I’m still in the we should make signing that are as risk free as possible.

Raya & Maddison fall into this category and so we should both the boat out for them even if we overpay a little

posted on 22/6/23

I don't get why Maddison is being brought into the Raya debate. We haven't moved on from him have we? Feels to me more like Leicester are waiting for bigger bids to come in.

And comparisons with Kane are silly. They'll need the money. He'll really want to leave. There's not a huge market for him, certainly at the price they want

Exactly where I stand with it. 100%.

We've risked and failed for years so I'd prefer a few tap-ins this summer so we KNOW we've strengthening. For too many years we've HOPED we've strengthened but they just haven't worked out.

You pay a premium for the home grown and the slam dunk signings. Simple as that.

The good news is that if, as reported, Tonoli moves to Newcastle, Sky Sports are saying they can't afford to buy him AND Maddison due to FFP restrictions. The path might be clearing but the problem with that is that means Levy will keep negotiating this one until the end of August in the full knowledge we're the only big club in for him. That risks a major club taking a punt last minute or, and this is worse, he doesn't get a proper preseason under Ange because Levy keeps lowballing.
