He's achieved about the same points tally as Steve Bruce for Newcastle and played negative football. He was also the manager whose CL winning Inter team fell off a cliff the year he joined. He's a dinosaur just like Jose.

Well that's kind of what I was alluding to. Yeah he did very well with Valencia but that was pretty much the same year Jose was tearing up the Premier League for the first time. A lot has changed in football since then. They've both been left behind.

So why don’t you see no good reason why he is held in such high esteem then? He did exceptional jobs at Valencia & Pool; did a decent job at Chelsea and at Newcastle had half the budget Bruce had.

I like Benitez and still think he’s decent enough but wouldn’t want him near our team

He did well at Valencia, sure and I know he won the CL and FA Cup with Liverpool but they were well versed in collecting trophies long before he came in. Houllier was the real driving force for change at that club. It as mostly his team that won the CL and they rode their luck on the way to winning that. He's a good tactician with questionable man-management skills but he's not a great football manager. For me the highest esteem is reserved for those, like Pep, that revolutionise football. It's not just about winning, it's about winning better and doing it in style. Maybe I'm being unfair and that my criticisms are largely coloured by my opinion of a man he shares a lot of common traits with, Jose.

Is Potter really a no brainer? Seems like a risky hire to me. Certainly you're being kind ranking him alongside Nagelsmann

Potter would be a very Poch like appointment. I also don’t think Nagelsmann Is us appointing a sure bet either.

Nagelsmann Is my preferred choice but I’d be interested in seeing what potter could do with us also.

For me he's a premier league proven manager getting the most of out of his squad whilst playing attractive football. He's a tier below nagelsmann rather than alongside him but he'd still be a brilliant appointment

Yeah not arguing with the prem proven bit at all. He's doing a good job there. I do feel the XG is getting him out of jail a bit, though, they're right where you'd expect them to be in the table.

It'd be an interesting one for me. Not brilliant, not awful.

This is what I'm afraid of also. I guess if Brighton do well with the rest of the season he may make his name heard by Levy.

If Potter is indeed a risk, at least we'll be dropping points by trying to play nice football, rather them dropping them playing crap like now. But when you watch Brighton, it doesn't feel too high a risk because with better players you'd expect us to convert more chances. As long as he is given time to stamp his philosophy on the team.
