I struggle to understand why people will listen to one are of experts in health who even between them can’t agree yet refuse to listen to economic experts who as a group state quite clearly that this cost is becoming far too high and will in turn cause even more and longer lasting health issues.

Listen to the advice of financial experts over medical experts during a pandemic? Really?

I’m absolutely certain I didn’t say anything remotely like that but keep on trying to misinterpret my words if it helps your argument
We need a more caring economy that puts people before profit

The more people that behave and do as they're told the sooner we can get back to some kind of normality.
Also, economies recover, dead folk cannot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Over 90% of the population are strictly adhering to the rules. The government estimated 50%.
Economies don’t just “recover” and the latest estimate now is that this situation is no longer recoverable.

It’s just a natural defence mechanism. Thinking long term economy doesn’t come into it when everyone’s first thought is to avoid the virus.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely
"Based on what? If, what I'm reading is correct then half of deaths have occurred in care homes. Would a lockdown have stopped that? Could the homes and hospitals not just have locked down"
I'm assuming it would be fewer than half of all deaths had we continued without Lockdown, as the total death would be far higher.

It’s not about profit.
It’s about having an economy that can afford to look after people.
We’re all going to pay for this further down the line, but for now the fight is against suppressing the virus. I’ve resigned myself for these measures to continue until the end of June.

Too many people think about the cost of everything and yet know the value of nothing!! If this pandemic teaching us anything it should be, firstly, that we are better as part of a larger union who can then best use its buying power, trade agreement etc and that the smallest and weakest can be looked after by the largest strongest and, secondly, we simply need to change this entire economic system away from the free market “I’m all right jack” system that Reagan and thatcher cobbled together 40 years ago!! We need a more caring economy that puts people before profit, value before cost and the many before the few!! We have to learn from this!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Having a union with tories and having a more caring economy are completely opposite ideas.
Can you imagine trying to persuade BawJaws, Rees-Mogg and Pritti Patel about the merits of a more caring economy?

are Swedens numbers not getting worse?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes. Their approach is very controversial.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
depends of your definition of worse 2k deaths without lockdown but observing social distancing (that we completely failed at and had to lockdown)
based on population size their deaths are about a third less than ours. all without lockdown
Can you imagine trying to persuade BawJaws, Rees-Mogg and Pritti Patel about the merits of a more caring economy?
makes me feel a bit sick
I hope Boris has maybe seen a different side to things after his illness and immediately removes Patel from her position

Sorry Dal
based on population size their deaths are about a third less than ours. all without lockdown
wasn';t their some sort of article saying that they don't tend to socialise as much in countries like Sweden/Finland etc which would mean social distancing wouldnt have as much of an effect
again as usual may be plucking that out of nowhere
my mum is an obvious concern for me, my gran has cancer so there's another, and my father in law has had massive heart problems the last year or so.
Huge number or deaths, in lockdown.
I don't know what people imagine will happen if they ease that just now, other than a spike numbers.

We’re looking at a very grim near future under the present circumstances.
How is the world going to recover economically under completely new rules where normal movement is not an option?
Having Trump in power at this time is a concern. He’s just one step away from doing something REALLY stupid.

They’ve started easing in construction and elements of manufacture. We’ve had the notifications through over the last two weeks. Huge companies are reopening sites and retail outlets along with house builders. Construction material manufacturers such as bricks etc are reopening.
First steps. I think schooling and garden centres and the like will be next.
