Ravel Morrison
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn’t count Ravel, unless we include ‘being dropped on his head as a baby’ as an injury.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He had potential: Ferguson judged him as being the best young player he had ever seen. Has he fulfilled it? No. He's been loaned out by Sheff Utd and he couldn't get a game in the Championship before the lockdown.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry: just read the OP more carefully. It said 'due to injury'. I just saw 'didn't fulfil their potential. Ah well, yes, maybe he was dropped on his head....

Pato is a good example - could be classed as burn out

Robb Jones - retiring at 27 ftom shin splints is bad. Class defender.

Gazza - not much needs saying there

Essien - absolute monster by his knee was a wuss
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How did Essien not reach his potential. Was one of the best midfielders in the world?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah fair point DJ but how many Team if the whatever does he get into? I think injuries massively held him back.

Harry Kewell, Jonathan Woodgate, Lesley King all spring to mind for me personally.

Alan Smith as well.

Maybe Luke Shaw?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Was looking great til that leg break. Was good last season though and has looked very good in recent months also especially at the left of a back 3.

Had a spell out this season but other than that he’s been pretty much injury free for 3 seasons now.

Still needs to improve going forward but it’s easy to forget he’s still only 24. If he can keep in good shape and injury free there is still a big future there imo.

If the Brazilian Ronaldo never reaches his peak yet is still one of the greatest players ever, then how good he could have been if it wasn’t for injuries?

The theme of the thread is ‘Players who didn’t reach their potential due to injury’.

Not ‘Players who didn’t reach their potential because they are a dikkhead.’

Rodrigo Possebon
Will Keane

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The thread the other day made me think again about Possebon. I was under the mistaken impression he broke his leg under the Pogatetz challenge, which derailed his career. However, he was back in action a month later. The fact he never made 100 first team professional appearances across any of his clubs (and a number of these were hardly top clubs) makes me think he appeared better than there was in his first few appearances.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You didn’t watch him enough before his injury then. He was head and shoulders above his peer at U18 and reserve level.

Fergie said the lad was special, and he didn’t usually get it wrong.

Whether it was physical, psychological, or a combination of the two, I don’t know. But he was a different player when he came back. I think the confidence was gone.

And whether the injury so so severe or not, it was a horror challenge. Absolutely terrible.

Don't remember any big injuries derailing his career? He just flopped in Europe and became an alcoholic didn't he?

posted on 8/5/20

Ortega played 450 games and got capped 87 times by Argentina???
