The government give a family with two children thirty five pounds a week family allowance, feed your kids with it.

........

In the US that is $45. I could easily feed two kids on that and myself. And have change.

couldnt agree more, been saying this, rashford. puts soo much effort (that his fingers must have blisters) in typing some tweets and he ends up with an obe. and the whole country cheering him.
would cheer for these overpaid frauds when they start
giving even 20 percent of their salary for that cause.

This is the problem.
Obviously we have to do it but people need to be looked into in more detail. The OP may have phrased this in an aggressive and dismissive way but there is some legitimacy to questioning where their money is going.
There will be difficulty when it comes to removing such additional benefits also; I’m sure people will kick off massively.

Get rid of the MPs getting £25, that won’t cover a lot but it will help.

And then what, take the children in care? That would cost a lot more than a free lunch.

Food is just one cost involved

clothing
rent
electric/gas

isn't the average electric bill upwards of £1200 a year for a family of four nowadays?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
What’s the point in working, If you can just plea poverty and expect the government. Well the tax payer. To pay for your food, Gas, electricity and rent ect.. No wonder we are called benefit Britain.

So is locking people up in prison but there does need to be rules and to an extent I agree with groovy. If someone doesn’t have enough for food but is spending money on subscription services like Netflix for example, takeaways etc then something needs to be done.
If people are genuinely too stretched to be able to take care of their family and they’re not taking the mick, then we should give them all the help we can.

Brilliant article. How about we put the blame on the parents instead of the government all the time. How much is a bag of pasta and a tin of tomato’s. Prob a £1 from Aldi. What percentage of these so called parents who are calling for free school meal? Smoke, drink, have a car, Got sky, Netflix, Get takeaways ect.. But people come back saying can’t punish the kids for their parents. That’s just passing the buck. We want to give parents who are poor with money. Even more free stuff. Anyone who can’t feed their kids. Should have all their outgoing check to see where their money is going. And by the way it’s not free school meals. The hard working tax payer. Pays for it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you. You expressed my sentiment perhaps more sensitively than I did.
The silent majority (AND WE ARE THE MAJORITY) have had enough. Feckless parents unable to feed their children and its the governments fault somehow. There are dreadful parents in society. And you all know there are. They are not "disadvanteged". They are willfully neglectful, irresponsible or just plain ignorant. Enough.
Personal responsibility please. It is the not the state or tax payer's duty to bail out inadequate parenting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
No you punish the parents. All benefits should be paid in vouchers. For food, should be so they can only buy fresh fruit and vegetables, Milk, Bread ect.. If the kid needs clothes. Then they can only be used in shops like primark and shoe zone.

No, hold the parents to accountability. As this poster has said, analyse the parents outgoings. No cigarettes. You, the parent have to feed your child.

If your interested in the childrens welfare, then they would at least be fed and safe from feckless parents, and the cost it's only money.

Rather than giving them their benefits all in cash, they should be issued vouchers, be it food or clothing. Make sure that only food can be bought as oppose to other items available in supermarkets ie cigarettes, alcohol, white goods etc.... and then they wouldn’t need free school meals.

I am interested, that's why I think that if they are hungry, we give them something to eat.
I don't really get your righteous anger, if they get free school meals during term time, then the parents are poor, even though 70% are working. But on basic incomes, or laid off because the virus.

He may not have gotten his point across very well, but he has a point with the gist of what he’s saying. Families are given benefits, and it’s worked out so they get enough to live to a basic standard of living. This includes food, so why should they get extra benefits on top of what they already get just because they don’t feel the need to prioritise their child’s wellbeing over their own selfish needs.

Rather than just throw more money at them, we need to address the causes.

I would agree with this in principle but sadly I think it would just open up another black market. Swap £10 in food vouchers for £6 in cash. The only way it would work is to be make the vouchers secure and non-transferrable.
