good knock from Burns but needs to keep going. Kept his head after the chaos at the other end.

Still off 150 balls though...he's hardly owning it

But I'm being pedantic here - let's not knock it...he's still there

Very harsh. This is test cricket, not 1 day or T20. Silly comment.

Woeful from Pope. Another player who doesn't deserve to be in this team. Although doubt there's anyone better in the county scene.

posted on 10/6/21

Pope's career in microcosm. Another tidy start, and then out cheaply. Too talented to become the latest Vince, but... he needs to really up his game. On current form, he probably shouldn't be playing when Stokes and Buttler are fit.

Starting to get worried Pope is going to be another Hick or Ramprakash.

Really needs a big score soon.

I think considering we're now 120 odd for 4, I'll take him being not out at the end of the day even if that means he's only on 80 odd.

Just look at the top order scores yet again 35/0/4/19
Thts 4 out of the top 6 failing to even get to 50.. Apart from Root the rest aren't good enough. WHY because their averages prove it.

I think someone suggesting Malan earlier is a decent shout. At least he applies himself and values his wicket.

I'd go as far as saying Ali and Woakes are a similar level of batsman to the likes of Crawley, Pope and Lawrence. I think against India we will need to think about the playing someone like Woakes at 8 for his batting.

I think he still gets in at 6 at the moment but needs a substantial knock soon. Lawrence is probably his main competition at the moment.

The pitch looks like it will take spin.. The decision making is barmy, England win toss and bat first. Meaning in all likelihood NZ will bat last and we have no front line spinner?

posted on 10/6/21

Yeah, it's one from the two, though we have so many candidates for the #6 spot at the minute that I'd almost be tempted to let Pope and Lawrence go back to their counties, get some runs and try someone knew in the meantime.

Pope is definitely the one with the most potential, mind you... I dunno. He just needs to actually play to it sometimes. Just heard he's scored double figures in 10 out of the last 11 innings, but only reached 30 once...

One thing i do like about Burns he does move his feet and then plays the ball. Sibley is very stuck in the crease..

Buttler at 6 with Foakes as WK could be a shout too.

Yeah this was a shocking decision.

Thank fack Burns has found some form. He seems to get runs when they matter. Had a good Ashes last time out.

Has properly established himself in the team now.

I think with the #3 spot now, it just feels like there is so much pressure on it now as it's constantly being chopped and changed and no player seems to get a consistent run. I think this is only the 7th innings that Crawley has batted at 3 because he's been shifted back and forth and actually opened more often than he's played at 3. I'd be interested to know who has played the longest run of consecutive matches there in the last few years. Obviously a mix of poor performances doesn't help but it feels like we need to make a decision and try and stick with someone.

I think for the India series we need to give someone the whole series even if they kick off with a load of single digit scores. Whether that's Crawley (I don't think it should be but if it is, back him), Bracey, Hameed, Malan, Stokes whoever. Lets not give them 2 tests and then revert to someone like Bairstow because he's smashed it round in the one day series.

Vince is a very good player but I think it's the method of his dismissals which was his downfall. Bowlers knew they could bowl full outside off and tempt him into drives. He'll cream a few away but then you just pull your length back and he'll nick behind.

Wasn't it like 80 odd and his highest score that he got and then got dropped? Yeah that seems harsh to me and possibly deserved more of a run at 3 on the back of it.

Agree on Malan though, he's a top player and I'm sure his 199 the other day would have given Silverwood something of a nudge.

He got 83 in the first ashes test, the one more 50 and got back in the team after injury in NZ and got 76 in his last innings. Feels harsh to drop anyone after a score.

Ah of course, I remember now. Yeah that was an odd decision. Who was it that they turned to for the next test?
