England v New Zealand Tests

I don't get why they look at the number 8/9/10 and see who can bat, When the top 6 should be scoring the runs. Its almost an incentive for them to fail.

No frontline spinner once again, ridiculous in my opinion.

Burns
Sibley
Crawley
Root
Lawrence
Pope
Bracey

That's a seriously inexperienced batting lineup. The only one of that top 7 whose place is 100% assured is Root. Honestly, it's no wonder we're struggling at the minute.

Burns has come off some poor form but has been batting well enough in 2021 that he should not be on the "under pressure to deliver" list, especially given the lack of credible alternatives.

Sibley, Crawley and Pope all have potential but none of them has performed with any consistency, so they should definitely all be on that "under pressure" list.

Lawrence and Bracey... Very soon to make a definitive judgment obviously, but Lawrence needs to start stepping up pretty soon. Average of 23 after 11 innings needs to start increasing.

I'm glad Hameed isn't playing this series, but if he keeps scoring for the rest of the summer then he should definitely be under consideration for Sibley's or Crawley's spots.

Funny, isn't it. Burns' average is only just better than Sibley's and Crawley's, but the latter two's trajectories are very much downwards since mid-2020. Hopefully a couple of good scores and they'll both be back on track, because they both started their Test careers well enough to suggest that they're capable of making it.

Indeed - you'd like to think that could be Hameed in the #3 spot, but in typical England style, a hugely promising career ends up being complicated by external factors. Still time though.

Crawley is an interesting one - watching him play you just wouldn't think he's a top order bat. He's one of those where he's astonishingly good on his day, but that's not something you can depend on every single innings. Which is pretty much the opposite of what you want from a top order bat in Test cricket.

Agreed re. Burns and Sibley though. I'll back Burns till the cows come home, I rate him massively and I've been tooting the horn for him since about 2016. And Sibley has so many of the right attributes, which is why it's so frustrating seeing him struggle.

Crawley frustrates me.

He can clearly play as shown by his 267, but then sometimes you watch him and he looks so unbelievably average.

Maybe he just needs another year or two at County before coming back.

Crawley feels a bit James Vince like to me. He batted beautifully when he scored that 260 odd last year but on a nice consistent deck. I'm not sure he's solid enough to be a top 3 batsman in the test arena but hopefully he'll prove me wrong.

Burns and Sibley are the best openers in the country and actually look comfortable in leaving balls and playing strong defensive shots early in their innings despite their awkward techniques. Both happy to bat time which is exactly what we've been crying out for.

Absolutely. They need to maybe just work on their ability to nurdle, but I agree they're the best on offer currently

Looks a good pitch. Great opportunity for Burns and Sibley.

Yeah, if they could rotate the strike a little better, it would help put bowlers off being able to find some rhythm given the right/left handed combination they provide.

Especially as both massively favour scoring through leg, so the field has to change around completely when they rotate strike

Strike rate of 20 for Burns

A tad slow but good start so far, should be able to cash in later

I did wonder when the first complaints about strike rate would come.

Sibley is batting at about par for him if not a little ahead with those two crashing 4s. Burns looks surprisingly stuck at the moment, he usually bats more fluently than this.

Not a lot wrong with this start though, approaching 50 without loss is lovely compared to 30/3 after 10 overs. Who cares if one gets out cheaply now? They've almost seen off 20 overs now which is good news for the middle order rather than Root and Pope walking out to the crease with less than 10 overs being bowled.

The big problem with bats like Burns is that he looks so fidgety and ugly the whole time, even when (by his standards) he's in full flow. He's actually a perfectly capable ODI bat (I've watched him in the T20 Blast enough times FFS) but he just never looks comfortable at the crease, which makes people think he's stuck or on edge. I suppose sometimes he is, to be fair, but I think one thing that counts massively against him at this level is that his shuffly/ungainly technique gives bowlers a bit of confidence because they think he's not in control.
