the 1976 heat wave peaked at 35.9 degrees C
It was over 30C for 16 days on the trot and 15 of those were over 32.2C
This year it is predicted that the country will experience 2 days over 30C, with some areas experiencing between32 and 39 on Sun, Mon Tue. with temps in he mid 20s on the days either side
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes and we had a load of excess deaths in 1976 too. Also 32-39 is a disservice to what will happen. A massive area of England will hit 36-40C (above anything 1976 produced) two days in a row. A realistic possibility is the UK breaking its daily maximum record on Monday, breaking its daily high minimum record on Monday night and breaking its daily maximum record again on Tuesday. Hundreds of people will die and many thousands will need to go to hospital.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well just as well we declared a national emergency and the Beeb hasnt shown pictures of sunshine...imagine how many more would die if they had.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The BEEB are far too busy mentioning that there aren't enough black ladies in the team.

I just don't see the problem, it's not a COVID restriction that has its own associated cost, it's cost-free advice that could save some lives of vulnerable people such as elderly or those with heart or breathing problems.

Once upon a time it was the elderly that looked after their young.

Maybe perhaps because those you’ve cared after (noble thing to do, I’ll give you dues there) weren’t one of those it did kill? They shut it down because the original variant was pretty nasty to some/many people. It was common sense, which wasn’t actually implemented quick enough under the current govt. there’s no reason to be looking for conspiracy theories. I trust them not a jot, especially this lot, but from what you’ve been saying would involve most of the medical community in the world being involved in the conspiracy. Always, always question them, ofcourse, but there’s a line where you go from mildly interested to a qanon whack job.

A most credible take by Devonshire on this article ,I don't often say that, but well said sir .
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s a sharticle harl. Anyone with kids, a dog or elderly relative will know how uncomfortable this week will be
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes Nick ,like many others I also have children, and a dog and cats and also elderly relatives ,and to me it boils down to common sense, and remembering what our parents told us years ago when we also had hot summers ,stay out of the sun, drink a lot of liquid and don't be bloody silly ! and speaking of my old dad,a most gentle and humane person you could hope to meet, even he says "gawd blimey these bleedin' politicians stating the bleedin' obvious as if they invented it "
----------------------------------------------------------------------
it’s really not rocket science.
Wear sunscreen, stay hydrated, and stay out of the sun if needed. Why people are trying to create panic is beyond me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well exactly!
No need to not show lovely pictures of sunshine, incase it encourages idiots to go out and enjoy it without taking very simple, obvious but necessary precautions.
Look after your pets, and your elderly relatives ...do people need to be told to do this? or am i giving the average person too much credit?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But it’s not for the average person through, is it? It’s for people like you….
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why me? I have already said i don't need telling what precautions to take in hot weather.
Are you one of those idiots that does need telling? You clearly struggling readings, so i guess may be!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course I’m not, obviously you struggle with your own reading, as well as your typing. Best not throw aspersions around about other people’s intelligence if you can’t even compile a sentence yourself 👍
Interesting scenario having a rest home for the young being staffed by people in their 80's.

Look, im not saying that cost free advice is not important and valued....
But not showing viewers pictures of sunny scenes
Warning people not to travel
Closing schools
News reporters acting like its a disaster
Its just OTT, and as some have mentioned on here, a response to the blame culture that is rife where if someone takes no precautions and suffers in some way they will blame others for not spelling it out them..
I worry for some people who need spoon feeding such simple information and protecting from inages of sunshine which may encourage them to go out side to enjoy the high temps without applying any level of basic judgement

In every generation in history there's always some thickskate people bemoaning how bad things have become. Even in the days of Jesus there were people crying about "what the world has become". But the world keeps spinning. Intelligence is the determining factor in how people perceive things. Thick people interpret events in a thick way.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know you enjoy trying to be profound and superior, but actual intelligence is no marker in how people interpret things. Plenty of so called intelligent people say and do thick things all the time.

How did we manage in 1976?
No snowflakes in the good old days.
STFU and get on with it!

"The UK reportedly experienced a 20 per cent year-on-year increase of “excess deaths” that summer, with a huge spike in hospitalisations as a consequence of sunstroke and heat-related heart attacks."
That's how you managed.
Perhaps if there was a national service telling people what precautions they can take it wouldn't have had such a huge impact.

That's how you managed.
Perhaps if there was a national service telling people what precautions they can take it wouldn't have had such a huge impact.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
People moaning, getting hot under the collar because the BBC decided not to show some sunny photos. What is the world coming to?
What happened to the good old days where adults didn't get worked up or make articles on Ja606 over nonsense like that?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
wow! picking at a typo now. The last refuge of someone losing an argument.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What argument do you actually think you’re winning?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeez...you do need spoon feeding so here goes. I have made the position that people need to apply commonsense, take precautions and look out for those who may be vulnerable....we don't need the beeb screening us from nice pictures in case it encourages to abandon commonsense.
You have suggested that I'm the sort of idiot who needs spoon feeding commonsense.....which is the actually the complete opposite of my original post and subsequent comments....and I highlight this and your come back is that I committed a typo and therefore am an idiot.....great comeback btw

the 1976 heat wave peaked at 35.9 degrees C

----------------------------------------------------------------------
No need to get personal. Intelligence is definitely a marker for how people interpret things. That's the rule. What you're saying is that there are exceptions to the rule, which is also true.

the 1976 heat wave peaked at 35.9 degrees C

----------------------------------------------------------------------
No need to get personal. Intelligence is definitely a marker for how people interpret things. That's the rule. What you're saying is that there are exceptions to the rule, which is also true.

Personal?

How did we manage in 1976?
No snowflakes in the good old days.
STFU and get on with it!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"The UK reportedly experienced a 20 per cent year-on-year increase of “excess deaths” that summer, with a huge spike in hospitalisations as a consequence of sunstroke and heat-related heart attacks."
That's how you managed.
Perhaps if there was a national service telling people what precautions they can take it wouldn't have had such a huge impact.

Yeah, no need to have a go at me. I don't try to be profound or superior.

People moaning, getting hot under the collar because the BBC decided not to show some sunny photos. What is the world coming to?
What happened to the good old days where adults didn't get worked up or make articles on Ja606 over nonsense like that?
