The whole "stopping traffic causes more pollution" argument during a protest is like a doctor saying to a patient "This is going to hurt a bit" when putting someone's shoulder back in. At that moment in time, yes, it is going to cause more pain than not putting it back in.

"You're a doctor! You're meant to make things less sore! You sir, are a hypocrite!"
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The doctor knows the answer to his actions. As does the patient.

This lot are acting like 4 year olds lying down on a supermarket floor because they can’t get their own way.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Or throwing soup over a work of art.

The world really needs to stop listening to young people like this and the older ones who simply haven’t grown up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Define "grown up".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Blue hair, screaming and crying instead of listening and engaging rationally. Know the type?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The majority of kids in school are being taught about bigger picture issues and the importance of change. Not just beaten with a stick for getting a sum wrong. Will we then end up with a whole generation who just never grow up? Just accepting the way things have always been is not a sign that you are a grown up. It is a sign that you are a limited human being.

And many other things in the real world. Being given one side of the debate in school and ending up being 18-21 years old, thinking you've got everything figured and crying and screaming when someone with differing views to you makes their point, is NOT grown up, is not enlightened, it IS very limited.

Yeah these types don't tend to be so good at maths anyway. They are also likely to want to be whacked with a stick in different ways, in my experience.

Governments should stop giving billions and billions in subsidies to things like electric cars which don't solve the problem in the slightest and instead pump similar money into investment in innovation.

Almost every major innovation has come through government investment as private investors are more risk averse.

The things is everybody who participates in causing the disruption is totally aware that they are stopping folk getting to work, getting the kids to school and people getting to hospital. By the law of averages if you've caused a 6 mile long tail back there will be all sorts stuck in the jam.

I remember seeing George Monbiot on Politics Live claiming that it was completely acceptable to let down the tyres on certain cars in a cowardly overnight kind of a way so that's what you're up against.

You can't reason with these people because they will always use the argument that anything goes when you are trying to save the planet.

The problem is if you lock them up then the tax payer gets hosed and it makes martyrs of them.

Best thing is a bit of community service picking crisp packets out of hedgerows and scrubbing off graffiti. I bet they'd hate doing something that was genuinely useful for society.

Are we fked though?

We’ve been told we’re ‘fked’ so many times by these alarmists. Credibility has lost all meaning….
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is definitely a shift in weather patters and increasing temperatures globally.

I don't know for sure what is causing it but it ain't good.

What's going to happen and by when?

Global temperatures are definitely affected by humans, no doubt about that. It's the supposed deadlines that we have been given of 2030, 2050 and 2100 that I am sceptical of and what the costs are of trying to meet these targets (which is nigh on impossible) such as 1.5c.

So because a very specific target can't be put on something that is clearly very complex, we should give up trying to change the outcome?

What a beautifully simplistic world.

It is always good to look at things from a point of view of nothing currently existing and then deciding from a baseline of nothing currently being accepted, what should be acceptable.

Ok. Let's say I live in a row of houses. It is nice, there are trees outside. The air is fresh. That is the current situation.

The proposed situation is that 10,000 people come along outside my house every hour and throw a bucket of poison at my windows. Seeping in and causing harm to my children.

Do we want that? Guessing, no.

So why, just because that DOES exist currently, do we not want to change it to the much nicer scenario of not being poisoned by selfish strangers?

Seems really strange that strangers are allowed to poison other people who are doing no harm themselves, purely through being selfish.

There lies the problem "I have always been allowed to poison you, so who are you to try and stop me now?"

Essentially.

As I mentioned, boomers are going to hate the future.

Poolmyfinger reminds me of this quote from Garland Greene in Con Air..

“He's a font of misplaced rage. Name your cliché; mother held him too much or not enough, last picked at kickball, late night sneaky uncle, whatever. Now he's so angry moments of levity actually cause him pain; gives him headaches. Happiness, for that gentleman, hurts”

You can protest all you want but if your protest starts restricting others’ ability of movement, you deserve what’s coming to you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah yes, the voice of reason.

If you wish to protest and you choose to disrupt people who want to travel by motor vehicle then the proportionate response is for you to be severely injured or killed by a motor vehicle.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The "when" is difficult; the "what" less so. You could say it's already happening, given the dry rivers in Europe, China and the US, which can obviously mean all sorts of problems including food shortages.

You can't easily point at any one flood, fire, heatwave, drought etc and say "that was climate change" as opposed to "that's just freak/extreme weather". But I understand a lot of heat records in the northern hemisphere have been and are still being broken this year, plus the aforementioned droughts. Of course, 2022 could be an outlier - or it could be that temperatures are starting to reflect atmospheric CO2 ppm, as scientists have said they would. If things carry on this way, we are in trouble.

There are concerns that an El Niño in 2023 or 2024 will tip us beyond 1.5C, thereby perhaps precipitating a Blue Ocean Event in the Arctic and thus speeding up warming even further (loss of albedo effect etc). I'm no scientist but believe this would also play havoc with the Gulf Stream and thus with the climate on which agriculture depends.

Short answers:

What? Less food - maybe much less, and all the problems that entails
By when? Next 2-5 years, perhaps even next year

Not my predictions, just how I understand it.

And this is exactly why people are in the streets blocking roads.

We *do* know for sure what is causing it, and the situation is very much worse than “ain’t good”.

The public needs to be made aware of exactly what’s happening and how frighteningly bad the situation is; and public bodies and the media have failed, wholesale, to get this information across.

Imagine having so much hatred of people who are trying to save the focking planet. Even if you think they are misguided, backing big oil and mega corporations over the right to protest is just bizarre.

Is it their love of big oil? Their inability to entertain even the slightest change in their lives? General idiocy? Have they been indoctrinated?

it's also utter nonsense, having to send in ambulances/hearses to clear up the mess would just cause more disruption.

far better to take the protesters away and execute them elsewhere, in an open field perhaps, or france.

Another failure in public messaging:

Predictions that climatologists, atmospheric physicists, oceanographers and others have been making for a generation have often been frighteningly accurate.

We know very well - they have proved very well - what is coming if we don’t act. The data we have collected over the last 50 years plus has led to very accurate predictions which we’re now able to extrapolate from very precisely.

Ignorance or claims of uncertainty are not valid excuses.
