I recall Feste had this Coventry lad on toast at their place in either a league or cup game, can't exactly recall which but then on his day, Feste had most fullbacks similarly cooked.

Didzy has followed my uncle's advice. He used to say, "always leave the theatre with them wanting more". He was a top bloke, terrible anaesthetist though.

Some of those twilight anaesthetics do just that - leave you wanting more.

Surprising backroom recruitment with DCFC announcing the appointment of Matt Hale as our new Academy Manager.

He replaces a big void in Darren Wassall and co's fine work but comes with a strong pedigree given he's worked for over 10 years with Southampton's Academy.

Hale came through the youth ranks at Bristol City and gained his first professional contract with the Robins.

Southampton's B team just won Premier League Division 2 and their Under-18s reaching the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup, where they were beaten by eventual winners West Ham. Young homegrown players like Kam Doyle and Tyler Dibling have also become part of the first-team squad.

I like this appointment and on paper it looks a good move. Hopefully his contacts will allow us to get decent players in either via free transfers or on loan for the the 2023-2024 season.

Thanks Desi for this extra info. He does sound to be a good appointment esp given Saints' record of bringing through youngsters.

Rodrigues has signed for Oxford from Notts County. I wondered if we might be interested but too late now. Maybe their free-scoring forward is on our radar?

Evening Chicago,

Rúben Rodrigues was mentioned as a potential target for Derby in the gossip sections with nothing concrete.

Found his level at National league so it's now a question of whether or not he could make the transition to League One.

Good point on Twitter, the players we were actually linked with and those that we got were of a higher quality. Transfer window opens on Thursday so let's wait and see who we're rumoured to be bringing in, having on trail.

Personally I sense at least two or three from Rotherham who'll know Paul Warne's approach to matches and fit in with his style of play.

I'd also like our defence resolved first considering we require two RWBs (unless Knight and Smith will be considered as back up options and Rooney's name has popped into my head too), two LWBs and at least four CBs if we're to play 5-3-2.

On a separate note my thoughts and prayers go out to the families in Nottingham tonight who have had their lives torn apart by the senseless attack.

May they Rest in Peace

I echo that, a senseless taking of life. RIP to those who died and thoughts with their loved ones.

I'm from Nottingham and still have family there, fortunately all unaffected by this directly.

It's tragic and heart breaking for those concerned.

I've not been able to find out that much about that carnage but it is of course disgusting, senseless and pointless. It must be doubly hard to take as I imagine such events are pretty rare in UK so that when one happens the impact is huge. In this crazy country there seems to be a mass shooting every week and I just pray that it is not going to be an epidemic which migrates elsewhere.

On a more optimistic note I've watched a bit of footage on You Tube showing goals by Lee Bonis. Difficult to glean much from limited footage but he seems quick and strong with a knack of being in the right place at the right time.

On the back of Chicago mentioning Lee Bonis.

Bonis (transfer fee required) - Joined Larne last season for a relatively high sum by their standards of £100,000 from Portadown. Expect it'll take an offer three to four times that amount to play ball with his current club.

23 years old and a NI international, scored 12 goals, 9 assists in 29 appearances. Plays as a CF and is currently watched by Derby, Bolton and Hibs.

And they're after Knight too apparently ...

If we can negotiate over £4 million for Knight and he wants to challenge himself at Champ level again then it's time to let him go.

However I sense we'll be offered half that figure plus add ons and will accept it.

Knight’s contract expires next summer. If we keep him we will still get a few for him next summer as he’s under the age of 24, but that fee will likely be a lot less than we could get for him now. Whilst he’s a decent enough player, he doesn’t score enough for me so I think we will sell him.

Rumours of Jamie Tartt on loan from AFC Richmond. Bit of a loose cannon but will score goals

No thanks, he couldn’t cut it at Man City.

There have been many suggestions for the positions where we need more personnel but there has been hardly any mention of a back-up goalie for Wildsmith.

Loach at best seems to be a potential number three/coach and I believe has still to sign. He never let us down when he did play - far from it but I'm sure a number two must be on PW's radar.

Any thoughts as to possible candidates?

posted on 16/6/23

Asmir Begovic has been released by Everton. At 35 can still do a job and be good for Wildsmith to learn from.

My second option would be this Spanish GK on a downward trajectory, his recent club are debating to offer him a new contract so we should jump in and offer David De Gea the best we can! Alternatively the other Spanish GK available is Pepa Reina. Only 40.

For a more realistic answer I'm not sure yet. Here's a list of free agent GK.

Wow, thanks Desi and what a list!

But I suspect we will only be looking at younger keepers in need of experience which will presumably mean a loanee, eg, the lad from W H who got injured immediately.

Great interview with PW on Rams TV. What a breath of fresh air the guy is!

Strange goings on in the world of football. This morning Bournemouth announced the sacking of their British manager Gary O'Neil who had done a sterling job in securing their PL status. I had wondered if Bournemouth have successfully managed to recruit Graham Potter which makes the 'brutal sacking' somewhat understandable given his knowledge of the PL. To my surprise ( well, no that much) its a Spanish manager that they've turned to....Arsenal, Aston Villa and to a lesser extent Wolves Spanish manager association and their successes prompting this move? That's five Spanish managers in the PL for the 2023/2024 season.

More surprising news this evening. For a manager to galvanise his team from a 4-0 defeat to win 5-0, drag them to a play off final and win it AND get promoted you'd think they'd have legendary status. Not at Sheffield Wednesday who have 'mutually' agreed to part ways with Darren Moore.

The days of our owners not being as bat sh*t crazy as Italian owners of the 90s in Serie A are long gone. Incredibly impatient with no intent on gradual progression.

Does the football league now have too many Deadly Dougs and impatient Rupert Lowe esque owners ruining our beautiful game?

Or can you see the logic int the move? The club wants to move in a different direction and is doing it early.

posted on 20/6/23

I think O'Neil's sacking is very harsh, but Darren Moore didn't get SW into the top 2 and very nearly blew the playoffs. I am not surprised by his "sacking".

Burton seem to be signing some players, I wonder when we will see some new names?
