Signing of the Season

Going for Rice as signing of the season is up there with Alan Partridge declaring "the best of The Beatles" his favourite album. Talk about low hanging fruit. The transfer fee has to be taken into account when judging this. Rice has been brilliant but he's nowhere near signing of the season for me. On balance, with all things considered, I'd probably say Vicario is the only one that fits the bill.

Oh and anyone making rash judgements on his abilities based on goals conceded I doubt has watched even one minute of our games this year. He's been unbelievable. He's barely put a foot wrong (including borderline fouls in the Everton / City games) and all for the princely sum of 17m.

To even mention him in the same breath as Raya, given the errors he's made, is frankly insulting.

Doesn’t look like many agree, or any outside of Spurs fans.

Udogie wasn’t signed this season, end of.

I’m throwing Elanga’s hat in. Five goals and seven assists, if Forest stay up then he’ll have played a huge part in it.

It’s also made all the sweeter by Antony being absolutely shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

I thought you said "add your own". If us Spurs fans consider him to be signing of the season given his actual date of arrival was this season, then that's up to us. Don't start playing Caesar if you're asking for people's opinions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, so last time, this is signing of the season. Not signing of last season, not best new comer of the season, not best debut season, but signing of the season.

He’s not even been THAT good ffs.

Ahh so you have to be cheap to be regarded a 'signing of the season' ? Never knew that - good Balon D'or isn't handed out for similar reasons otherwise Ronadlo wouldn't have got a look in..

As for comparing Vicario who has been very good for half a season with an establised talent like Raya - this is frankly insulting to Raya.

Your over the top assessment of all things Spurs based on little evidence does you no favours and makes you sound like a young Sandy.

Surely the value of the player helps to define the success of the signing.

A £100m signing of an established international is expect to have an immediate and quality impact. Rice more or less lived up to his price.

If you took someone like Vicario (£17m) or other signings this season, they have also had an immediate, high quality impact that exceeds expectations, with such expectations partially dictated by what was paid.

Its not a case of being cheap, its about being value for money if we are talking about "best SIGNING of the season" as opposed to best player of the season.

I don't think it is Rice. Kudus for me.

----------
Chelsea paid £100m for Enzo. He won the WC. He is a flop. There is more pressure and expections from a £100m players. Many have flopped like Lukaku, Hazard, Coutinho at Barca, bound to be more.

Like or not Rice has improved as a player from last season. He is a pivitol part of Woolwich's team. He could have easily put his feet up like Hazard at RM and put on a stone in weight.

He didn't and went the other way.

I think in terms of sheer impact Rice is top for me, cos we wouldn't be in a title race without him, but if you taken price tag into consideration he probably makes top 5 but I'd put Barkley, Vicario and one or two others above him.

100%

I don't think people are understanding that though. As you say, that kind of defines the difference between signing of the season and player of the season. For the latter, Rice is unquestionably one of the nominees. For his price tag, all things considered alongside a lower points tally than this stage last season, you can't objectively say he's improved them. By definition, he hasn't. He's played as well as I'd expect a 100m player to perform. To not even consider price as a metric is frankly absurd.

pivotal in steering Arsenal to less point than they had this time last season

Debateable whether he's improved them. That's not to say he hasn't contributed significantly, but the measure is not against how crap Enzo has been for the same price, its what difference he has made to his club. So far he's just been a fitter, slightly better Partey.

But Vicario has conceded more than Spurs had this stage last season, so you can't objectively say he has improved them.

Yeah it's a ridiculously black and white metric to use to make or break your argument, it essentially holds no weight IMO.

Luka is making the mistake of thinking that if Enzo is the 'bar' for 100m players, then Rice is storming it. The problem is that Enzo isn't the bar. He's just another in a long line of overpriced Chelsea players. Harry Kane was near 100m. Gareth Bale and Bellingham too. These are the calibre of players I'd expect for that kind of money. I'm not saying Rice isn't a top player, he is. In fact he's the nearest thing I've seen to Roy Keane since he retired, but to say he's improved them isn't accurate. What's improved them is the return to form of Odergaard and a fit defence. That's the real difference.

I see what you're doing but the difference is Vicario was 17m so even though we're both pulling the same stunt regarding goals conceded and points earned, one player was 83m cheaper than the other.

______________

The bar is all over the place. Maguire, Caceido, Anthony etc were all also similar prices and Rice is in a much better age range compared to Kane.

He's undoubtedly improved us because without him we'd be slogging it out with you guy and Utd.
