I'll be happy with Potter if it's him. At least he is more adventurous.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is he though....he had a dreadful scoring record at Brighton.
DeZerbi came in and took them from scoring at best 42 goals under Potter and they hit 72, even last season, which was less impressive 54 goals.
At Chelsea, Potter managed 29 goals in 28 PL games before being sacked.
Ive always thought of him as having a bit of a blind spot when his teams get to the final third.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He is better than Southgate and the pool of managers is weak.

So the next manager has to be win the world cup. Good luck to him/her.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
not really, it was southgate's choice to leave.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But what is the expectation of the next manager if losing finalist is not good enough.
The majority of international teams play horrendous football.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I used to subscribe to this too but it seems like the times are changing. Portugal in 2016 and France in 2018 were always used to defend Southgate but the last two euros winners and the world cup winner have created a lot more and had more of the ball.
Think international football might finally be catching up to domestic football now that most the players have been coached in this style now
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think Spain are the outlier. Even Argentina bored everyone to a Copa America and in the World cup it was more the Messi factor than entertainment.
Just say we got Klopp and it was the heavy metal stuff but then we lost on pens in a QF. Would that be acceptable?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
it's not really about now entertaining it is, it's that fundamentally if you are consistently creating fewer chances than your opponent then you are not set up to succeed.
if I believed that southgate's style of football was the best way to win at this level then I wouldn't care about how entertaining it was.
For me Southgate has taken this England team as far as he can. He lacks in too many areas to truly get us to the next level, and he's proven that over time.
He has certainly united the England team and the support and brought a lot of pride back, with players wanting to be part of it and fans embracing it more., but a change is needed.
Personally I would go with the Wolves manager, Gary O'Neil. A modern, exciting passionate manager IMO.
Southgate was always a very limited-ability manager and did the best he could. Thanks and good luck to him.
If we were to appoint Jurgen Klopp (ain’t gonna happen), we’d win the 2026 World Cup (so, ain’t gonna happen).

Either way wins nothing. You might as well be fun if you’re gonna lose. Especially if you get 8 years in charge of some of the best English attacking talents of a generation.

Time to go back in for a foreigner, unless Potter is available to take the job.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What we need is a coach who adds some tactical sophistication that Southgate lacked (with a pragmatic understanding of how much complexity you can actually drill into a team that only meets up three weeks a year) while having some of the cultural intelligence that Southgate excelled in. Let's not forget that we had generation after generation of England sides with talented players who failed due to lack of togetherness or being crushed by the external pressure. Sometimes under the leadership of foreign coaches with great credentials and a reputation for tactical acumen.

And England supporters would be wise to understand that Southgate's limits as a manager weren't the only barrier to success during his tenure.
