Southgate stepping down

To switch it around, how would Southgate have done managing the GG? He already played an unbalanced team for this Euros so little chance he does anything different with the Lampard/Gerrard problem. How's he going to manage the strong personalities of Terry, Lampard, Gerrard etc and the cliques found within that camp?

Spain were the best team in the Euros by a country mile, no shame in losing to them.

How would England fans feel with another foreign manager? I thought Sven was decent but underachieved. Capello was weird as he got England playing great stuff in the qualifiers and they battered lots of sides but the 2010 World Cup was shocking and he lost the players. Does the manager always have to be English now? Or should it be the best man whatever the nationality?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't want a foreign manager. I've always felt that. It's cheating to get a top manager from elsewhere.

Personally, I don't care about the nationality if the coach is the right fit. I'd love to see Klopp take the job.

I mean, it is up for debate as the original point made was ‘there’s no shame in losing to them’ when in reality England had an opportunity to make their move at 1-1 and really go for it and Spain were there for the taking. But Southgate for some reason chose to sit back and Spain dominated the rest of the half and that late goal was just what a cowardly tactic deserved.

So yes, Spain are the better side but if all that is said after the game is ‘there’s no shame in losing to Spain’ when the reality is that England could have beaten them if they were braver then people who defend Southgate will never have to confront the truth of the matter. But you do you boo

This. I think a lot of southgates fans have the same attitude to this England squad that they used to have for the Spanish squad - that they aren't as good as people think. But with the right manager and tactical mindset these players can play better than they've shown

Greece the only team to have won the Euros or the World Cup with a foreign manager?

All the big football nations employ local coaches. I mean, you have teams like Brazil and Argentina hiring national coaches without any experience coaching at the highest level of European club football. Often youth team coaches or ex-players without much coaching experience. A country of England's football pedigree should not be hiring foreign coaches.

Klopp as manager would be very interesting.

Liverpool fans - which of the current England squad would suit his style of football? What would be a typical Klopp 11

Sir Gareth

27% of England goals scored in tournaments was under Southgate’s tenure. What a great job he did.

Nothing like "borderline offside". It's offside or it's not. You can't make out like a perfectly timed run was somehow lucky.

Riiiiight,

Do you think it’s possible that Spain simply upped their game once they conceded an equaliser?

They had two more shots on target than us, one of which resulted in a very late, borderline offside goal to win it.

That’s it, that’s why we lost, so no, it’s not up for debate because that’s how football works.

In the 25 tournaments post 1966 before Gareth took charge, we had won seven knockout games. In his four tournaments we have won nine.

Err....it's exactly what happened. It's like saying when a player scores a brilliant 25-yard strike that an inch difference is the shot contact point is the difference between the top corner and skying the ball and therefore it was somehow lucky. WTF does "borderline offside" mean?

Keep getting told we have a squad full of talent who are a match for anyone
Yet we were pretty garbage in the group stage, and against Slovakia, managed to scrape past the Swiss, beat a poor Dutch side, then ended up chasing shadows against Spain
Same story against Italy last time out, Southgate just didn’t have the answers once Italy took control of the midfield
He may be a good at man management and creating a good spirit but that’s where it ends at the top level

Very disingenuous as usual. The real question is why did England go back into their shell once they were on top? And you can brush it off and say Spain upped their game but that ignores all the previous history of Southgate using that tactic in all the big games he’s managed that England were knocked out in.

Perhaps you’re on the wum and I’m piiiising against the wind here but many others saw what I saw and will agree.
