Maybe our interest the other day in some rumours regarding Alphonso Davies was true if we had a coach in mind that lives by attacking wingbacks?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Back in July I watched the Copa America and Uruguay in particular as they were a decent side. They had this left winger called Maximiliano Araújo who was excellent and for Sporting he plays as a left wing back. Perhaps he’s a player who Amorim could bring as a ready made player for the position we need filling the most.

I doubt very much that the press has United’s interest in Amorim wrong; I think the question is how interested Amorim will be given the current transitional state of the club and, particularly, the state of the squad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree with kinsang that if they have let the name leak as a very clear statement of preference without being at an advanced stage in negotiation, then that's a really big blunder.

Everyone has to start somewhere...........
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t get me wrong, what he’s achieved is incredible, particularly at this stage in his career, and I think he’s a very, very good head coach.

Just trying to put the headline figure in perspective.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't do this to us now Rosso!

As sad as I am seeing another Utd manager sacked (as that means we've been poor and no Utd fan wants that) since the sacking I've been feeling a bit more positive as there was clearly a cloud around the place.

I certainly wouldn't expect that high a win percentage but I am hoping he can get us playing some good football even if there will be bumps in the road.

Looking back now perhaps Ineos had him in mind all along what with chasing quite a few CBs and signing Ugarte and Zirkzee. I'm intrigued to see how he fares.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not entirely sure about Zirkzee as an Amorim player, Diafol. And I’m about to upset you further…

No evidence (although some logic) behind this, but I have a feeling that we won’t get him. And that he’ll end up at City.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't do this to me Rosso!

Like I said earlier I don't know much about Amorim but I was thinking of Zirkzee as one of the two behind a CF. Does he not work hard enough for that no or is it something else?

I'm also hoping this is correct - https://x.com/RobDawsonESPN/status/1851208953171943659

Could this be you actually wanting him like mad but not setting yourself up to be disappointed?

I think they could spin that out though, RR.

McKenna leaked out, Tuchel leaked out, and we had a manager in place at that point.

Just thinking about the financial situation, and the backdrop is one that sees us already apparently pretty close to the bone with PSR/FFP, now with ETH to pay off, as well as a release clause to pay for a new head coach.

*If* United really want Amorim *and* Amorim wants to import the setup and style of play he’s used, pretty much exclusively, in his managerial career to date, we’re going to some new players pretty much immediately: without doubt *at least one* RWB and LWB, and probably an inside forward who can fill the Trincão/Pote role. That is going to cost some serious money.

It’s also going to leave a bunch of currently important players (not least Rashford, probably Garnacho, Dalot and Mazraoui) pretty redundant.

If he’s coming, I don’t think he’s bringing 3-4-2-1 with him, at least not immediately. We just don’t have close to the players for it. Which means something of a gamble (I’d suggest a big one) for both Amorim and United.

Trincão and Pote play behind Gyokeres, and when they don’t play, Amorim uses pretty much like-for-like (if inferior) players.

The pair of them, and they need to for the system, work their absolute asses off for 90 minutes. The four hardest working players in his setup are the four players in the box midfield: Trincão and Pote behind the striker, and the double pivot, both of which are expected to play box-to-box.

From what we’ve seen of him so far, Zirkzee would have a heart attack. Amorim wants four players in there who run and chase as hard as Bruno and Mount.

I’d argue that City are a lot closer to having the players Amorim would want.

He could set up with two of Foden, Bernardo and Doku behind Haaland with Rodri and Gundogan/Nunes (who he knows) in midfield. Walker can play RWB.

City also have several mobile CBs who are comfortable on the ball.

He's not going to City, Rosso. No way. Absolutely not.

This is just you securing yourself from disappointment.

In all seriousness it could be a gamble for him to go to City too with the court case and all that.

IF he did join United who'd be the winners out of the squad do you think? And some more of the losers? I can imagine some of the board self-combusting if he thought Antony was one of the 'hard workers' which sees him play in the four in 'the box'!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Various names have been asscoiated with us - whether it's been Tuchel, Southgate, Poch, Potter, McKenna etc, but it's never felt like there were genuine talks and they were going to come - it does feel different with Amorim, there's more certainty there, and whilst it's maybe not a done deal quite yet, I genuinely feel it's just a matter of time.

Any move of a manager to a new club involves risk. But big jobs at big clubs don't come along that often, and very few managers are in a position to pick and choose who they want to go to.

To many people, they will always say, why would you go to Utd and it's current state. But unless you aren't in a big club job, the Utd job really is up there in terms of pulling power, regardless of what has happened before. The chance to be the one who gets them back on track would appeal to any up and coming manager, you will still have some budget, and although it's hard to believe, there are definitely players there who coaches would see potential in.

As for City - well they don't need someone right now, we do, so let's get him. You don't know what will happen in the future, and Amorim will be aware of that also.

Of course Amorim may need to be pragmatic about his initial approach, but coaches need to develop and adapt to situations - it's a new coach, working with a new set of players, and I just hope he can communicate well, get the players on board and get them together in a way that we have seen other clubs do with new coaches on board.

It almost doesn't matter what he's done in the past - it's how he settles into the Utd job, and what he can do with these players.

I'm not even thinking about how he wants to play, whether he has the players to do it etc - he'll need to be pragmatic and tweak and assess the squad and see what he needs etc, but let's just get him here first before deciding what he needs to do.

I'm not trying to downplay Rosso's insight, but no-one can be for sure until Amorim is actually in the job and assesses things for himself. He could unlock potential in players that none of us has considered possible, or drop players who we thought had a great future.

Oh yeah, absolutely.

Particularly if he significantly changed his approach, which I’d expect he’d have no choice about. We saw that with ETH, and it’d be the same with Amorim, no doubt.

At the moment, when you watch any given Sporting game, seven or eight of the ten hardest working and most mobile players on the pitch are wearing green and white. He wouldn’t be able to do that with this United squad.

Of course. Mobility is another issue too. I’m not sure he’d be too keen on Mainoo, for example, sadly.

His midfielders tend to be all about tenacity, energy, fight, usually (although not always) explosive acceleration, moving the ball quickly, getting up and down quickly; rather than a calmer, more languid approach.

More Herreras than Pogbas, if you will.

This shouldn't even be up for debate, DC; it's something everyone is capable of, not just high profile footballers on princely salaries. The fact that we're still discussing it in 2024 highlights the scale of the issue within the club. We have the wrong type of sportsmen at the club, which has hindered successive managers since SAF. While some managers may have been out of their depth, a clear pattern has emerged: a lack of consistent work ethic has been a recurring theme over the years.

posted on 29/10/24

If you get a few of the newer players though who aren’t from that previous poor culture of our players, along with the new signings of Ugarte, and then the clear hard workers that should buy in like Bruno and Hoijlund etc then it can be contagious especially if it brings some early good results. It will soon weed out the players that aren’t going to buy in, if the manager is strong enough to deal with them and replace them with youngsters who will.
