in reality though in 1990 what did we achieve 4th place in relation to what many of the athletes below gazza on your list thats nothing, what if chris hoy had come 4th in all of the 6 races he won gold in, he wouldnt be in the top 1000

true.
but for a time gascoine was the best player in the world in the most popular sport in the world.
that alone should score massive points.
ive generally gone on achievements more than just raw talent and ability, but there have to be some exceptions, such as gascoine and to an extent odriscoll.
Ok so pendleton.
Multiple Olympic gold medals and world championships. Multiple world records. Raised the profile of female cycling, actively participates in doing this at mass events.
And never been arrested.
I wouldn't attempt to compile such a list because it is impossible to compare the achievements of sportsmen/women in different sports and different eras.
I just applaud all their efforts in their own field.

im sorry but gazza wasnt the best player in the world, lotthar matthaus was
gazza was up there but his story always felt incomplete. i.e. world cup semi-final, broke his leg 91 cup final, didn't make squad for '98
pendleton may have a bit of a case.
2 of her 3 gold medlas (which are her greatest achievements) have been won in the last couple of days, so there may be some grounds for fuller consideration of that achievement.
bear in mind though that we are looking at the top 100 sportspeople of the last 30 years.
pendleton probably doesnt come in the top 5 cyclists.
she may have a place in the top 100, but it wouldnt amaze me if she didnt.
she may look like an abvious canddate today, but would she say in 2 years during the middle of some other major sporting event ?
olympics only come around every 4 years so its difficult to win multiple medals but shes won 2 golds and a silver as well as 9 thats 9 world titles, shes the greatest female cyclist of all time
shes the greatest female cyclist of all time
------------------------
it's not a greatest femals list though its a greatest of both genders, covering all sports. besides which she wasnt the best female cyclist this afternoon, let alone of all time.
She's only won one gold this time around, not 2 (stupid rules )

exaclty.
if he'd have fulfiled his talent he'd have been a shoo in for nr 1 though.
he scores strongly on talent, and public acclaim (probably the most acclaimed sportsman in british history at his peak), and less so on achievements, in spite of his signifiacant role in getting england so close to a world cup final
nah, she did win 2 blueblood.
maybe she should be on there. i'll have another look.

but she was the greatest 3 days ago and for the best part of a decade
just out of interest is bobby charlton or bobby moore on your list ahead of gazza?
where do you reckon she should be in relation to these guys ? :
56. mark cavendish
57. nigel benn
58.andrew farell
59 steve collins
60. Steve cram
61. ian rush
62. steve harmison
63. james cracknell
64. kevin pietersen
65.ryan giggs
66.david beckham
67. barry sheene
68.mike teague
69. alistair brownlee
70.steven gerrard
71.roy keane
72. jonathon davies
73. laura trott
74. paul mcgrath
75. greg rutherford
76. jason leonard
What did she ether other gold in? As far as I know, she got gold in the keirin, silver in the sprint and DQed in the doubles. What else did she race?
nigel benn is not above steve collins and she should be above laura trott and greg rutherford who is an olympic champion, but his distance of 8.31 is average
pendleton only got gold and silver in this olympics.
I say 'only'...
she got a gold in beijing
blueboy, that's what I thought. Her other gold came in a previous Olympics.
i put her in at 86 in the end
fair point. yeah, it was 1. she won 1 at beiking as well
collings might be a bit unlucky but he didnt face any great s at their peak. benn and eubank were well past their best, and he still resorted to brawling in order to beat a chris eubank who was trying to win without hurting his opponents, and he avoided a fight with a young calzaghe.
