I do feel our coaches have some responsibility in over-looking technical players because am sure there are plenty players that have skill/ability that get over-looked because of physique
ManUtdDaredevil
Of course it matters, there is simply less to choose from. Say for example there are 25 players in every team, that would mean there are just 175 English players to choose from, while Germany (18 team league) have 351 and Spain 315.
I would say the influx of foreigners came at the beginning of the PL in 1992, the World Cup in 1990 2 years prior we finished 4th with quality throughout our squad.
Blame the countries councils for putting up signs everywhere that say "no ball games allowed"
-----
Did that stop you ?
We'd use those signs as targets

No, didnt stop me, but i was playing on the streets over 20 years ago.. times have changed. Ppl complain about anything today, and theres police everywhere so kids are conditioned to be scared to break the law.
There are obviously kids that still dont give a sh.1t and play anyway, but what if one of the scared ones has the potential to be the next messi, then sadly that potential will never see the light of day.
too much focus on getting results in the short term we have lost track of the process of developing well rounded player.
I was agreeing with you red devil
I say train up Mensa kids
It's a media myth created so
failed pundits can make
headlines......so scholes wasn't
technically one of the best??? Do
me a favour, I watch united week
in week out and the worse at ball
control aren't the British players
-----------
Really? The most technically gifted players in your team (RVP, Kagawa, Nani) aren't English. And Scholes is an exception, rather than the rule. You should have watched Spain's U-21s the other night batter Germany and seen the vast gulf in technique with English players.
ITV made a good point in their build up to the CL final the other week. Their league is filled with German coaches who all have an interest in the national team doing well and the development of home grown players. Next season we will have just 5 English managers, 2 of them coming up from the Championship.
Imagine seeing England at any level doing this, we simply can't.
http://youtu.be/SfJafYHDBZQ
football's become a business where we the fan(s) expect to see results straight away. This adds the pressure on the coaches to try and instill a winning mentality which at junior level at least can rely on raw pace and power. It will change as football goes in cycles
blaming foreign players is part of the process and we (Italy) have had similar issues because our clubs would rather sign an 18year old Brazilian or Argentine in the hope their nationality means they do well rather than give a young Italian a shirt, but it is changing.
The homegrown rule should help but even that's skewed, I remember reading that Cesc Fabregas while at Arsenal was classed as homegrown
stop hyping English managers up unnecessary would be a good start, if they start to believe it bit like players they have made it before they have we have no chance as they think everyone loves them.
give you an example which i expect to be wummed but oh well, the English media made out Harry was the messiah and Rafa was clueless, now compare their achievements and tell me which one is clueless.
Even our top players are not technically that great compared to their counterparts in other countries. I mean Gerrard for Liverpool and you say Carrick for Utd are probably the best technically between Utd and LFC but if you compare them to say Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta, Schweinstiger, Pirlo, Montolivio, Sniejder, etc, are they as good as them?
"football's become a business where we the fan(s) expect to see results straight away."
This is slightly untrue, this recent trend in fans wanting instant results is more to do with today's society as a whole, were we are surrounded with capitalism and consumerism where we are told we can buy anything and everything we want. You only need to look at German to see if you treat fans the right way then what they want more than to win is to feel part of something.
Money isn't the priority in German football, yes they treat it as a business like everyone else but they understand the fans are the most important part. They also understand if you just give home grown players a chance many will develop, we don't give our home grown players a chance so they simply do not develop.

So what happened before then?
It's the coaches at grass roots level for me. The level 1 coaching badge is so easy to get and it covers very basic drills so a lot of coaches only get the level 1 because that's all they need to coach Sunday league. If they progressed they would learn a lot more.
Maybe England could do what Serie A have done by allowing 12 players to be on the subs bench?
but maybe with an additional rule that the extra 5 subs have to be "homegrown" or U21?
We reached the QFs and got knocked out by the greatest ever goal in a WC as well as the hand of God. We also ruled European club football throughout the late 70s and early 80s with teams filled with all British players. The unfortunate incident in Heysel happened and we regressed as a nation not being able to compete with the top teams in Europe for 5 years.
If you can't understand that the over reliance on bringing in foreigners for quick fixes rather than given home grown youth a chance to develop then you're either a troll or stupid.
I'd say Scholes and Gerrard were (at their peak) close to or on a par with most of your list rejliverpool. Neither will be up with the very, very best but that's really not an insult to be a peg below Zidane, Xavi, Iniesta, etc.

I was talking with my mate about this yesterday.
The biggest problem is this:
At 8 years old in Brazil the kids are playing in the street, they grow they play indoor football, rarely if ever do you see them playing football on a full size grass pitch until they're 18 plus.
At 8 years old in England you put all these little kids on a full size pitch, with some tiny little dude in a huge net and just give the ball to the person who is developing hormonally much quicker than the other kids who will score 50 goals a season just cause he's bigger, stronger and faster than everybody else.
It really is that simple. Our ideology on how to play football is just plain horrible.
-----
You're probably not informed as to current rules.
U8's play maximum 7 a side on smaller pitches.
U7's currently play 7 a side but from next year it's changing to 5 a side on smaller still pitches.
The issues this causes is there are plenty of kids that want to play football, but you can only register a maximum of double the amount of starters (7 + 7) or new rules for u7s (5+5)
What happens to the kids that can't find a club, there simply won't be enough FA qualified coaches.
TheKaisersTrainers (U5676), do you think we can ever get a player that can reach those heights of Zidane and so forth?
Everytime you hear a player coming out of Spain, everyone harps on about the next xavi and iniesta!
The players that coming out of England right now, who are they and can they reach the heights of world football??

Now, now, there's no need for name calling. We didn't qualify for Euro 92, didn't qualify for USA 94, was that the foreigners fault as well?
The blame foreigner thing is silly because if our players were good enough, the foreigners wouldn't be needed.
We had an excellent squad to pick from during our golden years recently but we had inept coaches.
The german national team is filled with foreign players as well.
If you look at La Liga and the German league you are waxing lyrical about, their top teams have a lot of foreign players. How many spaniards for instance play for Madrid? Bayern as well?
The reason why we are poor is down to our lack of ability and not because of the influx of foreigners. For example, Italy recently won the world cup with a huge number of foreign players in their league, France did the same when they dominated.
It's not a good enough excuse I'm afraid. We do nto actually need hundreds of players available to pick a national team that will do well. You need roughly a pool of 50 players to achieve that.
Unfortunately, we do not even have half of that and if this talent was so readily available we wouldn't be looking for cheap foreign imports.
We had an excellent coach in Hoddle, but because he made one media slip up, he was cast out.
