Also SAF had told Carrick never to cross the halfway line.

Bit difficult for him to chip in with goals from the Half Way line.

When have we ever had a player do that?

comment by Robb_Targaryen (U9808)posted 13 seconds agoI am wondering how many players can one gsme be picked out to validate their assumed value.--------------------------------------------------------------------------That's one example. There's also Roma at home. Inter Milan away in 2009. Bayern Munich away in 2010. Real Madrid away last season in addition to the many games in England he has been sensational in.But yes, there's no way he can be as good as Cleverson were against a couple of very poor sides in 2011

..................

Hahah... the sadness of your delusion is we face an incredible amount of average teams and with carrick in the midfield we have never had a midfield look that good. In fact last season (In which he won player of year) carrick was not involved in a game in which we controlled the midfield completely. World class player myarse. Still trying to remember a game when we dominated midfield with carrick in it. Some hollywood passes and simple minded people will keep hyping him.

I know right! All those football players voted for him as one of their footballers of the year!

But what would they know because some random Nigerian guy on here thinks otherwise.

Tomorrow you'll try and convince us that 2+2 = duck.

another play who never matched his full potential no thanks to fergie converting him to a holding midfielder.
--------------------------------
In what world is being a vital cog in winning 5 league titles and a CL not fulfilling his potential?

I know i will come across as a condescending príck for saying this... But people who don't rate Carrick just can't read that aspect of football very well.

It is pretty easy to judge a striker, or a defender... or even an all action midfielder... There are easy variables to judge them on (goals, tackles, assists). The holding role is far harder to read.

Alot of people thought that Parker was better than Carrick because he was quantifiable... You could see him charging around, making tackles. Carrick doesn't need to do that, because he is a far superior player.

This Carrick loving from last season seems to have stemmed from the lack of competence from the rest of our midfield as opposed to him being a stand out player.

The cliched phrase best of a bad bunch applies here...

That said, as stated above, he is a good player, but to try to convince people he is one of our best ever is ludicrous at best.

Lets face it, you can count the number if stand out performances on a hand
------------------------------
and a millipede would struggle to count the number of really good games he has had.

Give me a consistent 8/10 over a flash of brilliance here and there, any day.

I'd say he is a solid 7/10 every game, does his job but rarely anything more.

Which is why I say he is a good player, who had the potential to be great.

Like I said, watch him vs Roma or that game at the Bridge vs Chelsea in the CL, and tell me how often he plays that well (and he rarely crossed the half way line then either).

In those games he got in the oppositions faces, won the 50/50s, created brilliantly and pinged balls 50 yards for the wingers in a Scholes'esc manor. He doesn't do that enough for me.

Day after day i'm referred to as an Australian. What does that have to do with anything unless you're specifically looking for hidden meanings?

Anyone that slyly slates Carrick as 'just the best of a bad bunch' has the brains of a lizard so you'll excuse me while I don't quite cry over your opinion you bedwetting cretin.

I don't know why players have to be world class or average either. As with Carrick, there are good, reliable players at many big clubs who don't get the limelight because that's all they are, good and reliable.

posted on 7/8/13

I know what BB is saying there. It's something I've said myself about Carrick despite being a big fan of his.

If he performed like he did in those games on a regular basis he would really be up there as one of the best midfielders in Europe as oppose to being a very good midfielder and one of the best in the premier league.

Whatever the reasons for that are shouldn't really matter, in my opinion.

One thing with Carrick that even if he isn't giving us those regular motm performances, he's giving regular performances on the rung below. And that's been good enough for us in this time, so it's probably harsh to judge him by those exceptional games he has had, as they, along with the poor games, are in the minority, but the good performances have been in the majority.

Fully agree Fletch. I guess Im quite hard on players because I want to see the best of them.

I've never called Carrick a bad, even average footballer, just don't think he's ever realised his potential.

Darren

Fair enough but how many footballers ever give those MOTM performances every week?

And look at Roy Keane. Everyone agrees that he was a legend but he rarely (even rarer than Carrick) gave great performances in the CL.

In big games in Europe for us Carrick often plays well. People use the Barca games as a stick to beat him with but pretty much every midfielder in Europe used to get owned by them when Barca were at their peak.

Roy Keane was fantastic in our CL winning season.

In fact, that night in Turin he dominated David's, Zizou and Dechamps. He also co teated with he likes kf Viera on a regular basis.

The comparison is void, Roy Keane was a different animal to Carrick. Compare Carrick to the Pirlo's and Xavis of this world, then you will see why people don't rate him as highly as you.
