Juan Mata - what does the future hold?

I seriously wouldn't want to see the back of Mata but in Jose's current system is quite clear why he's not featuring as much as a player of his quality should be.

I feel that what he lacks in pressing and work rate is more than made up for by his range of attacking talents but considering how little mobility there is in our central midfield, the need for a highly pressing band of three is even more pertinent.

At the moment, I feel he's almost certainly going to move on (as much as I'd hate that). As many games as he is getting at the moment he's very much a back up rather than a first 11 player at the moment. Especially in the big games. And going by his blog posts, he's thinking that too so I wouldn't be surprised if he requests a move sometime this season. The competition in the Spain squad is high enough without him also not getting significant minutes at Chelsea.

The only way I can see him staying is if we bring in an all action central midfielder for the pivot (high energy playmaker - similar to that of Vidal) so that Mata's defensive deficiencies are less apparent. Or if Mourinho decides change our main formation to a 4-3-3 with Oscar playing in a deeper role and Mata on the left or right with Hazard taking the other spot. However, I very much suspect that this is wishful thinking.

I'm not sure if anyone will agree, nor understand where I'm coming from, but I see Mata in the same light as somebody like Berbatov for instance. He is a luxury player.

He has all the technique and talent in the world, yet little interest in the physical and tactical nature of the game. The team has to be made around him, not him being made for the team so to speak. Your example of Willian and Schurrle sums it up for me, they aren't in my opinion anywhere near as talented as Mata, but they fit into your system far better. To play a high pressing game you can't afford to carry a luxury player for 90 minutes.

He is an unbelievably good player though. Far too good to be warming anybody's bench.

Very true Gazza - we'd be mad to let him go. But you can definitely tell the lack of game time is getting to him when you look at his blog posts.

As integral Mata would be to unlocking the tight defences of smaller teams, I'm not totally sure if he'd be happy with just that role. To go from first name on the team sheet to rarely seeing a full 90 minutes is going to worry a player of his quality, especially in World Cup season.

Better mids and he could play

All jokes aside, I think one of the Bender brothers would be perfect for you. Although I think Lars signed a new contract not long ago.

He isn't being rotated though is he Gazza. And don't get the stats of how many mins he's had.
Look at the games he's given to start.
Even a nice human like Mata will have an ego and want to play in the big games

I have always had a soft spot for Mata and did not understand what Mourinho was doing when leaving him out.

I am now starting to understand and actually am all for Mourinho's pressing philosophy. It will make us a harder team to beat with great creativity

Mata brings another dimension and still has a part to play in this side. I do hope that he does stay and try and fight for his place but I can see him leaving due to lack of game play.

It will be sad if it does happen soon but I have to admit that this new pressing system may be the way forward for this team, will Mata eventually adapt? Only time will tell

He has improved a lot in that aspect Sideshow, but he still doesn't fit the high pressing system we want to play like the other 4 do.

Exactly TCP

Just had a check and he's been involved in pretty much none of our big games.

Out of matches with:
Liverpool
Arsenal
Man City
Spurs
Schalke (Home and Away)
United

Mata has only been involved in 45 minutes (2nd half of the Spurs match).

If that's not going to worry a player of his calibre I don't know what is...

45 minutes in total by the way

That's sad.
You could also say it is why we draw too many of them
