If it's a replacement for the CL what's the issue? I think everyone is getting carried away tbh.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
From what I’ve read it’s not a replacement for the CL, it’s a breakaway. The CL would still exist, but wouldn’t have these teams. I’m assuming that’s what you meant anyway?

Problem with that is that it would make the existing European competitions pretty much worthless and would destroy the domestic league structures. Early shots fired from the FA/PL suggest that banning these clubs from all domestic competitions would be a possibility.

Messy stuff.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, it breaks away from the CL, but we remain in the domestic leagues and cups, which is why I'm so surprised by the strength of feeling.

Yes it would decimate the CL, But I imagine by the time the club's split the TV rights without UEFA taking their cut, and there's 30 odd top tier games, and 15 of those packing out your stadium then it would be a lot more lucrative.

It's no different to the PL being formed, breaking away from the FA and league structure, and only in the last 10 years really agreeing to ramp up solidarity payments. This was always the natural progression, and FIFA weren't bothered when the wealthy clubs wanted to stick it to the English FA

sky/premier league cant really take the moral highground can they?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No. It's the exact same situation as the 90s, just destroying the CL instead of the English first division

Clubs across Europe want a slice of what's given the Prem such power.

How I see this

- the big clubs want more money from UEFA. Currently UEFA pockets €500m out of the €3b generated per year from the champions league. Cut out the middle man and the ESL can split that between themselves.

- the big clubs aren’t happy with the proposed CL format. More games, more generated income for UEFA with little increase to clubs due to the pot being split between more clubs.

- Sky & PL are massively against it because they will lose £millions. Who wants to pay £90 a month to watch Burnley vs Everton?

We’re at the point where the bubble is close to bursting. Football finances just arent sustainable which is why greed is so prevalent. We will either see a super league which comes at the cost of domestic league football from the third league down or we see a huge hike in ticket & TV prices to fund the greed to keep everything going

EPL already props up football from the third league down,

How would this change that ?!

I don't remember clubs being immune from relegation in the PL. This is much more than what Sky did. Taking risk away from football is a joke. It is literally brands competing against each other now, not footballers. Hope everyone calls their bluff and relegates the English 6 to league two.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No but they seized control of their own finances, and negotiated with the English FA.

This is the initial shape of an idea, I doubt it will stay that way entirely or survive in its current guise after rounds of negotiation and scrutiny.

Especially not now the two most corrupt sporting bodies are threatening to severely (and probably illegally) punish them

posted on 18/4/21

If the big 6 are banned then it will be the end of the PL. Nobody gives a fack about a game between Brighton vs Burnley from a commercially point of view.

The “big 6” would field reserve teams. Why risk your stars in a meaningless league when you know you are guaranteed a spot in the ESL ?

It wouldn't be meaningless would it, PL revenue is still dependent on finishing spot, and is a matter of prestige, the FA cup is "meaningless" in relation to the premier League, but clubs still want to win it..

It will still be 38 games a year of capacity crowds, TV revenue and sponsership, they aren't going to shiiiiit in their own beds.

This league would just replace the CL matchdays throughout the season, domestic leagues would still be a HUGE part of a clubs revenue.

posted on 18/4/21

But it wont replace it because UEFA and FIFA are saying you can't bin the CL to create your own league and still enter their competitions, which tbf, I understand.

I dont think legally they have a right as a sporting organisation to deny access.

But do you think the clubs who signed up to this IN PRINCIPLE thought that FIFA would attempt to ban these clubs and players from world football?

Thats more what people should be concerned about tbh, that this corrupt cabal is seeking to deny access to the clubs who want to form their own league.

And its because the CL and CWC would essentially be dead dodos, its their greed thats made them react this way. they didnt care a jot when those same EPL clubs did the same to our football league structure

Commercial revenue: £5m
Total: £174.6m

Everton
Actual league position: 12th
Equal share: £31.8m
Facility fees: £19.6m
Merit payment: £16.0m
Overseas TV income: £55.8m

That’s the difference between 1st & 12th last season. £46m is a drop in the ocean for what the ESL will pay

posted on 18/4/21

That £46m will in fact be less when you account for the overseas and local TV viewership fees

posted on 18/4/21

I think they can. They're not banning them from World football, just their competitions. Now UEFA would need support from each countries FA, FIFA, players unions and even Government but it looks like they've got it.

£46m isnt a drop in the ocean, at all, thats ridiculous.

And clubs wont be putting out reserves in the PL to play it ffs, its not that £46m they will be putting at risk, but the full £130-175m by destroying the Premier league product.

this ISNT an idea to replace domestic leagues, its to get all the top clubs playing european football on every CL matchday, rather than an ever decreasing amount as the season progresses.

That would be a matter for CAS, Theres precedent with the forming of the Prem tbh, but who knows.

I doubt that there will be much legality in banning a player from all competition. If there is you have to wonder at why such a corrupt organisaton is allowed such unilateral power over a global sport.

Thats more worrying than replacing the CL to me.

They can form a new league and none of eufa or fifa can do something about it. They can ban them from the domestic leagues and players participating in eufa or fifa tournaments but that's all they can do.

20 clubs, 2x 10 team leagues, with a final playoff stage.

15 "permanant" members, with 5 required to qualify annually. (I can forsee that becoming relegation/promotion)

Crucially the competition would be owned by the clubs, rather than them only owning 49% as they would of the CL under the new plans (Equally owned by every club competing)

Remember Matip being banned from domestic football because he didn't want to play for Cameroon? Like he didnt want to, I found that odd.

I doubt it will happen just yet anyway, it reeks of strong arming the CL format. It will happen though I reckon.

Club statement:

Liverpool Football Club can confirm that we have joined Europe's leading clubs in agreeing to form a new competition, the European Super League.

A joint statement released by all 12 founding clubs can be found below, with further information being made available in due course.

We are committed to working with all stakeholders, particularly supporters, as plans for the competition develop.

Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.

AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Atlético de Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF and Tottenham Hotspur have all joined as Founding Clubs. It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.

Going forward, the Founding Clubs look forward to holding discussions with UEFA and FIFA to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new League and for football as a whole.

The formation of the Super League comes at a time when the global pandemic has accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model. Further, for a number of years, the Founding Clubs have had the objective of improving the quality and intensity of existing European competitions throughout each season, and of creating a format for top clubs and players to compete on a regular basis.

The pandemic has shown that a strategic vision and a sustainable commercial approach are required to enhance value and support for the benefit of the entire European football pyramid. In recent months extensive dialogue has taken place with football stakeholders regarding the future format of European competitions. The Founding Clubs believe the solutions proposed following these talks do not solve fundamental issues, including the need to provide higher-quality matches and additional financial resources for the overall football pyramid.

Competition Format

20 participating clubs with 15 Founding Clubs and a qualifying mechanism for a further five teams to qualify annually based on achievements in the prior season.
Midweek fixtures with all participating clubs continuing to compete in their respective national leagues, preserving the traditional domestic match calendar which remains at the heart of the club game.
An August start with clubs participating in two groups of ten, playing home and away fixtures, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter finals. Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue.
As soon as practicable after the start of the men’s competition, a corresponding women’s league will also be launched, helping to advance and develop the women’s game.

The new annual tournament will provide significantly greater economic growth and support for European football via a long-term commitment to uncapped solidarity payments which will grow in line with league revenues. These solidarity payments will be substantially higher than those generated by the current European competition and are expected to be in excess of €10 billion during the course of the initial commitment period of the Clubs. In addition, the competition will be built on a sustainable financial foundation with all Founding Clubs signing up to a spending framework. In exchange for their commitment, Founding Clubs will receive an amount of €3.5 billion solely to support their infrastructure investment plans and to offset the impact of the COVID pandemic.

Florentino Pérez, President Real Madrid CF and the first Chairman of the Super League said:

“We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires.”

Backing the new European league, Andrea Agnelli, Chairman of Juventus and Vice-Chairman of the Super League said:

“Our 12 Founder clubs represent billions of fans across the globe and 99 European trophies. We have come together at this critical moment, enabling European competition to be transformed, putting the game we love on a sustainable footing for the long-term future, substantially increasing solidarity, and giving fans and amateur players a regular flow of headline fixtures that will feed their passion for the game while providing them with engaging role models.”

Joel Glazer, Co-Chairman of Manchester United and Vice-Chairman of the Super League said:

“By bringing together the world’s greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid.”
