We should have bought Diaby? OK, Let's see how Diaby develops then.

Keep hearing this. We should have signed so many players who are now nowhere to be seen.

Then if we sign Diaby it will be why did we sign Diaby?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Diaby is a quality player to be fair.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So we're many others we kept hearing about on this thread. We shall see, but there's a reason why these players first go to clubs like Villa and Brighton before a joining a big club. Majority never live up to the hype.

Next summer Diaby will only be a year older. When Salah goes I now suspect we will sign someone who is ready I think, not some prospect.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Diaby is a prospect now?

Nah he was ready made for a big club, I said it when villa signed him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, that's why Villa signed him.

Al Ittihad have a shortlist of defenders — Liverpool’s Joe Gomez is very high on that list 🚨🔴🇸🇦 #LFC

Al Ittihad like Gomez as versatile player who can play anywhere across the back line.

Liverpool insist they’ve no intention to sell important players in the final days.

Saudis are still hurt about yesterday's result

And Liverpool or any of the other big clubs didn't, in an environment we are told is lacking right wingers.

Surprised Chelsea didn't snap him up in that case.

posted on 28/8/23

Liverpool were never going to be signing an expensive right winger when Salah plays nearly every game. Plus Doak looks like an outstanding prospect.

Well we did it with Diaz despite having Mane and Jota

At the time Mane and Salah had not renewed their contracts. You know this.

posted on 29/8/23

Jota was coming back from a big injury and we probably knew Mane was not renewing and he asked to leave.

Klopp never holds anyone back...and despite The Scholes Effect, Mane was on the decline since our title win

Ooooooh this is a bit of a worry...and our xga has been better when we've been down to ten men

Context is we're allowing teams to progress because we're aren't really relentless with pressing from the front.

Lijnders said there's a block of 5/6/7 players and then the front 3. We're looking to counter press in deeper positions so we can hit teams in transition.

I still think it needs polishing tbh

posted on 29/8/23

He also said the front 3 covers lanes for the entire opps defence and deep midfield then 'the block' has to cover them.

High risk but we've been winning games so far so hopefully we get better with the press and positioning

Mane was going at the end of his contract and Spurs had come in for our replacement in January.

Jota was to add bulk to the attack who could play across the front line when we had lost Sturridge the previous summer.

We have so many attackers we're not going to be bringing in an expensive right sided player, especially when Salah plays nearly every game. The guy would barely get a game.

Context is we have played Chelsea and Newcastle away and been down to ten men in 66% of the games so far. The sample size is way too small.

We beat Bournemouth 1-0 with 10 men and Newcastle 2-0 with 10 men. We've been better when forced to change from our preferred tactics. Early days but that could mean something, I agree, and it kinda reinforces my opinion on some things like the whole right back situation, the inverted conundrum etc.

Yeah that as well

We've been playing this system for about 13 games now I think...that's like a third of the league season. We should be seeing improvements soon, I hope. I pray

Maybe I should ask that guy for Liverpool's stats from the game they started inverting

Yeah, we signed a left sided attacker but not a right sided one so I suppose we kinda knew Mane was off and Salah was staying.

Also signed Gakpo in Jan when we knew Firmino was off this summer.

Forgot we got a whole new midfield from last season

posted on 29/8/23

Still think we need different additions depending on the style we want to play. I think we need better CB options if we want to invert. We need an LCB to replace Robbo and then true cover for Konate as Matip just isn’t that comfortable in that role.

posted on 29/8/23

We should be looking to replace Konate, Matip, Gomez & Robbo in an ideal world.

Konate should be a squad player. Van Dijk eventually should become a squad player. Robbo should be a squad player currently. But we're okay for now due to sheer numbers...and Van Dijk looks better this season.

posted on 29/8/23

Personally I think Robertson is as good as you can get for that role. He's excellent defensively but can still get forward and support the attack when need be. Slight issue when everyone shifts over and the ball comes into the box in the air but I suppose that's the trade off with him being good in support of the attack.

Having said that it would be good to have a more defensive left footed option who's good in the air for some games.

posted on 29/8/23

His positioning is really not that good. He used to get away with it at fullback because of Van Dijk's god tier form. Robertson used to get caught with the ball behind almost as much as Trent. Some of us used to pick this up.

What he has going for him is his workrate and aggression. He trumps Trent on that one

Konate when fit should start he’s a superb CB.

Diaby can play across the front 3 which is what he did at Leverkuson. He would have got the Europa games too. Saudi have been after Salah all summer and eventually there will be an offer which he and the club can't refuse. We have been slow to future plan on this case. Luckily it's too late in window to sell him now but he will be gone next summer.

Back to Diaz. Whether we were forced or not he was still an expensive backup at the time. He was going to be eased in but his quality was so good at the time that he demanded a start.
