Markovic was such a weird one.
On paper had a decent skillset and had just had a very good year at Benfica, but Rodgers barely played him even when we were crying out for any bit of difference in front of goal. Had a decent spell when we went 3-4-3 only to be dropped for no reason, and then Rodgers changed the formation and he never got back in.
Think a combination of joining the PL too soon and poor man management ruined him to be honest.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aye, dont tthink he was mature enough or had the mentality/hunger to make up for a lack of exp for such a move.

IMO, you can say the same about many youngsters. I feel Rodgers wasn't good for him and could have managed him better.

I think Thiago has missed more than Keita actually, I think he's missed more than 50% of the games he's during his time with us. Might be wrong
A funny thing I was remembering during the game on Sunday is how shocked I was when Nathaniel Clyne chose us over Utdthat Hodgson era still haunts me
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure that's true. Keita played 129 games over five seasons, with 41 of those coming from the bench, being subbed off . Thiago so far 98 games over nearly 4 seasons, with 2 of those from the bench.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
so, naby managed 5523 mins for us in 5 years, Thiago 5948 mins in 4 years and hes missed an entire season of 1 of those (this season)
So Naby was far worse.
put into 90 minutes thats 61.3 games for naby in 5 years 12.26 a season and 66 for Thiago in 4. 16.5 a season.
Keita was definitely worse, one of our worst I think, but those numbers are also impacted by the fact that Thiago almost always started when fit, unlike Keita who still saw a lot of the bench even when fit iirc.

I feel we were too soft on Keita, myself included. His recent behaviour supports that conclusion. One way or another we let him stay here too long. Perhaps the club should really look after itself better, because players rarely miss a chance to look after themselves. Sometimes looking after themselves means leaving the club, but sometimes it can mean staying.
Wasn't there a 10m bid for Thiago from Saudi last summer? I was desperate, so to speak, to see him go but was disappointed when he reiterated his desire to stay at the club. Looking back we should have done more to get him out the door. We could have then signed another midfielder, or maybe we could have even kept Carvalho to take his spot in the squad. IMO anyway.
Yeah, so I don’t think it’s a bad thing to create a supportive culture and team ethos, rather than just bomb out injured players.
Yes, we can look at football purely based on money and ignore any kind of relationship in the dressing room and so on, but it’s not really the kind of CLUB that I’d want to follow.
It also ignores things like whether the player actually wants to leave, whether there are actual offers and whether that’s worth doing given loyalty bonuses and then signing a replacement (which is always a risk anyway).
We can all be captain hindsight but it’s also not all about the balance sheet. Even football manager recognises dressing room dynamics.
We’ve got it wrong about three times in a decade, and even that’s a push.

Quite a fair amount yeah but many have that hunger drive and passion to play football as much as they can. Others you question if theyd have given up a long time ago if it wasnt for the money. Id put people like naby and markovic in that category.
Hasn’t Naby just been fined for kicking off because he wasn’t playing?

Rodgers was crap in general about playing players he didn't personally want.
I remember being annoyed at him in 13/14 for not even giving decent sub appearances to the likes of Aspas or Alberto when the games were already won. Then sure enough he brings Aspas on v Chelsea and expects him to change the game when he's barely kicked a ball in months.
You’re not buying really wanting to play as a sign of a desire to want to play?

Rodgers was a crap manager generally, just had the third best player in the world on his team.
Always makes me wary of a Klopp-less future tbh. I know others will disagree but I see a few years battling for top four again rather than being title candidates.

The think you’re spot on Fred.
Well top four could be a bit too hopeful if we’re honest even that would be punching above our weight. More than 4 teams in the prem spend more than us and show more ambition in the market. People dont agree with that but its true.
Thankfully prem seems be clamping down on it this year. Teams are actually taking it seriously. Lot of them are on the line or close to it and have to sell or wait until they can spend a bit again.
Our squads quite good imo lot of promise, and we should be better off with more wiggle room in the market than most the comp for top 4. We seem to be in a good position tbf, title challenges will take another special manager or a change in bow we operate but even Newcastle cant do that route anymore so aint happening.
I can see that happening but at least we should be getting a manager with a bit more about him.
Rodgers was worth a go as he was an upcoming manager who played good football, but realistically he was the best we could attract at that time, and I do think his biggest mistake was constantly fighting the transfer committee and wanting total power on transfers.
Firmino being a prime example. Literally offered a guy who was tearing the Bundesliga up and he didn't want him unless he was also allowed Benteke
Any manager coming in now knows they'll be working within the setup.
Think we need a manager who can spot a good player when he sees one, but also spot talented colleagues and listen and trust them and the team around him. Amorim seems to tick the boxes there he seems switched on and a peoples person. Xabi we know his intelligence from having him as a player, many of his teammates with us said he’d be the one to go onto be a manager.
Outside of these two its slim pickings isnt it?
Do u guys think Rodgers at Swansea before we signed him was better than say Gary O’Neil is now?
Next season could go either way. We still have elite players like Ali, Trent, VVD, Salah who know what it is like to be winners. New manager may have other ideas with some of these and may look for a complete fresh start. I don't think that would be wise.
He will still have a base of a squad that should at least compete for top 4, QF CL and a cup run. For us to go a level up he needs to address our lack of control in games, pathetic injuries and misfiring forwards.
