You're suggesting we could all be convicted rapists now?
Argument lost. Go start a petition for him or something.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't suggested anything of the sort and neither am I about to start a petition for Shed Evans, I just wanted to know peoples thoughts on the matter.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My thoughts are that the whole argument people are using that he's "not allowed" to play is ridiculous.
He's not welcome, the people have spoken. Footballers are high profile, they do feature in newspapers for the good and bad they do, the money they earn etc.
People care whether the people they pay to watch and associate with their town/club are convicted of serious crimes. They feel less empathy with them if they continue to deny those crimes..
If it's selling papers it's because people care about it, rightly or wrongly there it is. They've done the MP's expenses, people get bored.. war crimes? Years ago.
Mark
Agreed, he shouldn't be allowed to drive ever again.
Philspurs..
I wouldn't say I'm against Evans ever playing professional football again, that's down to people much better informed than me.
I would say it'd set a bad precedent for the sport, especially if his appeal is unsuccessful, and it's not something i'd like to see overlooked at Spurs.
Bales
Northspur - agree with you to a degree.
Treading carefully here, the girl went out with drinking both of the footballers, went back to their hotel room, had consensual se x with the first one whilst Evans watched. Of course we will never know what really happened after that, his word against hers. He said she consented, she said not.
It's interesting how the Supreme Court have brought forward the appeal/case review.

To anyone criticising Evans for denying the rape, to be fair if he feels he didn't do it and that a miscarriage of justice has occurred against him then he's not gonna confess to a crime he didn't commit just to appease people is he? Nobody would.

Didn't Lee Hughes leg it from the scene of the accident leaving the dying bloke in his car?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yup. Only turned himself in 36hrs after the accident, presumably to give time for any alcohol to pass out

I guess everyone has to form their own opinion on it but there's no doubt in my mind that there's a media witch hunt going on and, according to the rehabilitation of offenders act, he's deemed to have served his time, subject to complying with the terms of the license, and he's supposed to be safe to be around.
As far as I know there will be restrictions on where he can and can't work but football isn't likely to be an exclusion.
There are lessons to be learnt from this.
If you meet a girl on a night out and she asks to come back to your room, make sure you breathalyze her first then get her to sign a consent form, witnessed by a magistrate and a member of the clergy before you get stuck in.
Harrys: if he was a teacher would you have him back at your local school

Different circumstances apply here, working with kids or vulnerable people he wouldn't get past crb checks, different for sportsmen

The fact is that a jury found him guilty - unanimously no less! The fact that he has shown no sign of regret for his actions. He keeps posting videos claiming his innocence. His victim has had to change her identity and been forced to move away by a hate campaign mounted by his supporters - his family and friends.
If he had just done his time and kept quiet - maybe a quiet appeal but not what he has done. As to whether rape is not as bad as murder, ask a woman who has been raped and has to live with that feeling every day. A bad crime is a bad crime.
We should not trivialise what he has been convicted of as rape is a way that men enforce their physical power and superiority over women. We are not cavemen any more and women have the right to be able to refuse séx.

He is allowed to play, it's public opinion that's stopping him.
-------
I never said he wasn't allowed to play, I said in certain other professions he wouldn't be able to work again and in a warped way that is what is happening here because of the sponsorship issues etc. I know that he's allowed to play if someone actually signs him up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was responding to this: "Ultimately he should be allowed to play, but if he can't get a contract it'll be a harsh lesson for him and others who might find themselves in the same boat."
I know i'm being pedantic but thousands of people signing petitions against him joining two clubs.. including the one that'd paid millions to sign him.
Sponsorship issues is companies that don't agree with the club signing him, or don't want the bad publicity.
I met this girl in a pub about six years ago. I kind of knew her as we'd previously been at school together, and after the pub she invited me back to her place for a late drink and a chat.
Back at hers she literally forced herself upon me and I spent the night with her, but I do not remember ever consenting

why different?
Im trying to look at him as an ordinary real life person, which leaves out all the footballer as role model/ no role model argument that always muddies the waters.
Bales, somehow you've replied to me even though I didn't comment? But I generally agree with you on this.
I would join in this discussion but some of the ignorant comments are making me far too angry, and I'd just fall out with people.
I'll get back to lurking....

Plenty of people have been wrongfully convicted of crimes and campaigned for justice. You would if you lost X years of your life serving time for a crime you knew you didn't commit.
Again, not sticking up for Evans, just playing devils advocate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Devils advocate for what?
Does nothing to help him getting a contract in the public eye. Keep it shut, don't talk about, beg for another chance in football etc.
Either that or don't bother, and get a proper job.
I refuse to believe Ched Evans is hard done by.
